"He can just dream aloud in music"
Cellist Steven Isserlis shares his thoughts on the music and legacy of composer Robert Schumann - and on learning to play expressively from the family dog - in this interview with us, ahead of his performance of Schumann's passionate Cello Concerto with conductor Simone Young.

I love this man. He talks about music almost as well as he plays it.

Steven Isserlis, he is just so 'eloquent', you know. I've read his articles and interviews, heard his performances and recordings, and I could always, ALWAYS sense such fluency, such refinement in both verbal language and musical language.

"the Beatles influenced Schumann" - I think Steven is a fan of Monty Python!

Did anyone find it funny that this is supposed to be thoughts of Schumann, and starts and ends with Bach's Sarabande?? I wonder why... oh, well, a good Bach, Schumann, Bach sandwich- yes?

Steven you are an incredible musician who shares your musical and "vocal" accomplishments with us ,,,...the Philharmonia Orchestra is also fantastic and I was wondering at their recent transatlantic Broadcasting "silence " since they were a source of initial musical "strength" during the pandemic .... looking forward to listen to your collective musical collaboration ...Thank. you . and come back to Princeton. and Philly as soon as it is safe to do so !

We always love performing with Steven! And for us, though we can't travel to the US in person, all our performances from the past year are available worldwide, including for our US audience too 😊 Our latest ones from this spring are available here: philharmonia.co.uk/series/streamed-from-southbank-centre/
