It really spoke to me when Steven talks about how one may have a great technique, yet not focusing on that but being caught up in the mood of the music and that is what gets the audience truly involved in the performance. The musician is simply a conduit to bring the story of the music to the audience, rather than themselves being the focus because of their technical ability. Benjamin Zander said in one of his Masterclasses that, "yes you're a great cellist, but what else have you got? You have to be able to reach your audience." As a brand new cellist, that struck me hard.

Great interview! What a charming man he is! You covered a lot of ground but I wish were longer. I’m now looking forward to exploring the Britten cello symphony and the Rachmaninov trio. One suggestion: please push a bit harder with follow-up questions before moving to a new topic. Your questions are great, but you sometimes let the issue drop without getting a complete answer.

He really is the master interpreter, and this interview made me think. Cello is a very technical instrument so if course you must practice and understand the piece meaning and necessary dynamics. But can you study in advance really every accent and colour, or is there a line after which everything is just too prepared? Can you still be IN the music at that point?
@denise2169
@denise2169 3 года назад
I think this is true of every instrument. You have to study the composer’s intentions as closely as you can, and hopefully once the music becomes part of your soul, you have to trust your body knows what to do and you can let go and be in the music. This is what I think Isserlis must do.

Steven Isserlis’ technique is so ingrained into his musicality all he needs to do if focus one making music and the technique just follows. That’s the goal to be achieved by any musician in my opinion!

Definitely, when I focus on the rousing drama of the composition, the notes and chords, thankfully, just naturally seem to all fall into perfect place. Lol)It’s really amazingly wonderful. Jokes aside> Two great cellists with unique “strengths” and several good jokes.

Well, the title says talking cello WITH Isserlis but it is all a one way conversation with no dialogue and Pablo, who is being very gracious, is not asked his opinion on anything. It's all Isserlis. To the point of rudeness on Isserlis's part. Oh well.

Steven is an older, British man. What do you expect? Pablo is a young Spanish cellist who admires him. You can’t compare them. Besides, it’s not even important

@fingerhorn4
@fingerhorn4 2 месяца назад
I somewhat agree. Notice how Isserlis treats Pablo like a beginner, ignoring the fact that Pablo is a fantastic player, but Isserlis talks about himself without once asking Pablo his opinion on anything! But Pablo is gracious throughout which is a great credit to him. I too find Isserlis very self absorbed and self important, but maybe he is just shy and it comes out all wrong.
