With thanks to our funders Thymistem (www.thymistem.org/)
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Seventh Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement No [602587].
April 29th is the annual Day of Immunology. To celebrate, ThymiStem in collaboration with animator Cameron Duguid have created a beautiful, hand drawn animation explaining the function of the thymus, an essential organ of the immune system. The video shows how T cells, a type of white blood cell, go through a complex journey in the thymus to become mature immune cells ready to fight off infection. Given how essential the thymus is for a healthy immune system, ThymiStem scientists are trying to understand how to they can use stem cells to repair and regenerate this organ. Their ultimate goal is to develop therapies for patients with damaged or absent thymuses. Such treatments will also be of great value to the elderly, as the thymus becomes smaller and less able to produce the T cells necessary to fight infections as we age. To learn more about the exciting research being carried out by ThymiStem visit thymistem.org.

I was recently diagnosed with a thymoma, and prior to that I didn't even know about the thymus! I've been researching, watching videos and reading about it and it really is such a cool organ.

This is soooo true! Sadly, the first time I heard about it was in the ER when my daughter was diagnosed with a massive thymic tumor that ended up being one of the largest on record and was already stage iv

@@ggehh hi I was just diagnosed with a thymoma hru? did you have any symptoms leading up to finding out ? I'm freaking out I go see a thoracic surgeon tomorrow and Im scared I really don't know much about Thymoma I've been researching but finding little information ..is it cancer? Any information from your personal experience would be very helpful I have 4 small kids and I'm so worried 😫.

@@lovelywatts3566 hi dear, from what I know thymomas are the majority of the time benign, they can however be malignant and that would be referred to as thymic carcinoma. But when it is benign it usually requires a surgery to remove it and that's that. Unfortunately I can't help more than that, as I was misdiagnosed and I actually have non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, so I've been going through chemotherapy since the end of August. Sending you lots of positive vibes and hugs

Magnesium supplementation reverses thymus aging FYI
@pysvtfa4

Also zinc. Pumpkin seeds are loaded with zinc and the best way to get magnesium in your system is to soak in magnesium sulphate (epsom salt) or, even better, magnesium chloride (magnesium flakes). Magnesium is more bioavailable through the skin than the digestive tract.

The thymus does not make T cells the bone marrow does
@pysvtfa4
@pysvtfa4 3 месяца назад
The bone marrow makes immature blood cells, which travel to the thymus where they develop into the three types of mature T cells. Most of the immature cells from the bone marrow don’t survive.
@babababa-ic1ts
@babababa-ic1ts Месяц назад
Bone marrow makes b and t cell. T cells or otherwise lymphocite t only mature in the thymus. B cells are born and matured in the bone marrow.

thymosin alpha 1
@user-nd1lx8co2g
@user-nd1lx8co2g 2 года назад
I don't like this video. Makes the thymus sound scary... broken down at puberty, causes autimmunity, cancer... When actually many studies are showing thymosine alpha 1 and other thymus hormones to be very beneficial in clinical trials. Why should a youtube video detailing the wonderful benefits of the thymus gland make me feel scared, sad and depressed? It just gives the impression that you don't really understand the topic very well to begin with, perhaps just what you have read in some med school book? Doctors have a habit of making people feel scared! The thymus is amazing and peptides produced from it show very promising treatments for people with immune mediated, chronic bacterial or viral infections. Instead of focusing on the bad, why not view the thymus as something to be celebrated? It is a truly amazing gland.
@jjohnson9822
@jjohnson9822 2 года назад
think they mean thymus gland can cause autoimmune issues but thymosin alpha1 peptides can counter that by boosting t cells to destroy the bad t cells gone rogue
@pysvtfa4

@@jjohnson9822 exactly, the third stage of development is where those T cells are destroyed.

So children who have been forced into masks during the school day will likely have smaller Thymus' and/or the Thymus will produce fewer T-Cells than their body should at that age. This will have negative implications for them as they grow older with a weaker immune system.
@pysvtfa4
@pysvtfa4 3 месяца назад
That’s a reach, don’t know how you extrapolated that from anything in this video.
