Gary and Joe take a look inside a Myenergi Zappi 2 electric vehicle (EV) charger EVSE. The Zappi is approved for use with the latest UK government OLEV charging scheme. The unit is packed with smart functions and optimises the car charging with various energy sources such as solar, economy 7 off-peak and on-demand electricity from the grid.
The Zappi EV charger has an extensive set of safety features including a unique PME monitoring circuit which means it can be used on TNCS earthing systems. The system will detect a PEN conductor fault within the electrical distribution network.

Our verdict

I like the clever trick of routing the control wire for the live and neutral contactor through the earth contactor. This ensures that those are only connected when earth is connected, too.

A well presented look at the product's technical aspects thanks. It strikes me that this technology would nice to have integrated into a protective device at the consumer unit level, not with a contactor but perhaps a 3 pole electrically tripped manually reset isolator. Certainly is an interesting time for the evolution of electrical distribution technology.

Totally a agree if the supply authority are worried about a lost PEN conductor then this technology should be integrated in to the metering equipment. Thanks for the great comment Gaz

£700+ for EV charger £55 for Hari keypad... and installation charge on top of that... A bit exspensive!!! Great video guys nice to learn about the new advantages of this charger...

Also could this be used completely off grid and I'd I had a 10kw array with a 64kw kona ev. How long in good sunshine would this take to charge the car up. Also as the array is producing DC current, would I need to run it through a 10kw inverter?🤷‍♂️

efixx there is a sort of semi-obscure board which can be added to an Eddi device (the same mfg. of the Zappi). This add-on board has a few functions which I think would make a great video. Among them it had an e-sense connection for utility optimization. It has connections for temperature probes. And it has connections for a heat pump water heater. There are no videos demonstrating an Eddi device connected to a heat pump water heater which is driven and limited by temperature sensors using e-sense.

So for the contactor on the earth to disconnect you need electricity to flow through you before it will disconnect?

That’s how I read the patent that they have on it . To me it does not stop the risk of a shock. But will disconnect fairly fast when you are having a shock . Though I would also point out that if you only connect the earth wire when you supply mains power to the car to charge then you could say you have reduced the risk by another 25% based on 6hrs charge a day .

Typically if a RCD trips, after rectifying the problem you need to reset the RCD, how do you do that if the RCD is printed on the circuit board?

I have a 1st gen zappi, charging as the solar rate drops the zappi then uses my Powerwall 2 for the extra kws.

Hi guys, My zappi v2 has been installed yesterday but for some reason won't charge my renault zoe r110. It keeps saying RCD tripped, while nothing untowards has happened inside my house. What gives?

The catastrophic loss of a supply PEN conductor (11.00 ) with 400 cases reported last year is a surprise to me.When these incidents happen the implications for consumers with metallic appliances within the same district must have been dire. Have there been any fatalities as a result ?

We believe that 70 of the 400 cases resulted in injury - the report doesn't suggest the magnitude.

efixx hi lads great vid I’ve just watched , ive just had a v2g box fitted by OVO via Kaluza at kaluza .com and although its fitted i am still waiting for the elec board to upgrade my mains supply . As you can see from my response i was wondering how advanced the V2G box is that has been fitted. Ovo energy or Kaluza.com cheers

I strongly suspect in the UK when EVs are the norm, the government will be looking to tax them any way they can. A smart EV charger let’s them know when electricity is being used for charging, so they can tax it. I only ever use the granny charger at home to charge my Nissan Leaf and will continue to do so. As far as the government is concerned I could be plugging in a kettle.
