American tourists should realize that there are quite a lot of beautiful historic cathedrals in the rest of the UK, which are often a bit easier of access. Of course, many of our monarchs are buried in Westminster Abbey, and for a thousand years it is where they have been crowned.
That was just the nave area, to visit the royal Charles was £4 when I started working for Westminster abbey, now you have to go via north door and that was from 1997
That place is awesome. It's very big and there are so many historical figures buried there. This and St. Basilica are the 2 coolest churches I've been in.
You don't need to go first thing on opening or for sure you will encounter a line. Go late morning or early afternoon and entrance is quick and easy. I've been 5 times and know.
Unless it is specifically a holiday period. Bank Holidays, Easter, Christmas etc, you can expect to queue whatever time of the day you arrive. Just hope the weathers on your side.
Queen Elizabeth 1 and Mary 1 are not side by side. Queen Elizabeth's coffin, which lies underneath this memorial, is actually on top of Mary 1 coffin. I don't know who is buried near Mary Queen of Scots.
@@NegativeNomad The woman buried near Mary Queen of Scotts is Margaret Beaufort, Henry VIII's grandma, and Henry VII's mom. But that's just the monuments visible on top. The vaults with the coffins underneath the monuments actually contain loads of other coffins with people who aren't mentioned on the epitaphs.
St. Dunstan's Church called St. Peter's Abbey, originally sat on this lot of land when it was Thorney Island from between 940-960. Between 1040 and 1060, during Edward the Confessor's reign, Kind Edward completely rebuilt the Abbey and also renamed it Westminster. It was completed and consecrated a week before Edward died in 1065. Henry III began to remodel the Cathedral in 1245 and is, in fact, the first truly English king to be buried in the Abbey since Edward the Confessor. Henry's cosmetic makeover is what we mostly see today. The last major remodel was in the last 1690's to about 1700 when the 2 towers we see at the main entrance were added on.
It was not, It dates from the 1260's. There was an earlier church on this site from the time of William the conqueror 1066. That must be the one you are thinking about. The current Abbey is less than 800 years old.
Unfortunately by adding to the already awful stereotype about "Murrican" tourists. A church does not have to explain why photos or filming is not allowed. Actually the busloads of group tours from east Asia where they all have cameras would bring the Abbey to a grinding halt if photos or filming was allowed as they all pose for selfies or poke your eye out with a selfie stick. It is a very wise rule. If you do not like the rule take a tour boat on the Thames instead and record until the battery power fails.

It’s called the London Eye, which is its second name. It’s first name was the Millennium Wheel because of course that was when it was first built, and it’s given millions of tourists fantastic views of the London and the City of Westminster since.
Because typically photos and video are banned for monetary reasons. If it was done to protect the art or perhaps for some safety/security issues that would be a different story. I'm not doing anything that hasn't been done already and posted on youtube by news sources or documentary creators. I'm showing others what there is to see and maybe change their plans and come visit the Abbey or maybe avoid it completely depending on their interest.
