***** I bought the Winbook two days before Thanksgiving and returned it the day after because of the storage issues. But it's a great tablet if you don't need to install software. I installed Office365 and then ran out of space trying to do the Windows updates. Really I should have never install Office on that tablet and just used the Online apps and I think everything would have been smooth from there. Also I think they should not sell 16gb full Windows tablets at any price because it will just turn people off to Windows tablets. But on the plus said the WinBook was well made and other than the storages issue the only other thing I could complain about is the battery life was a little short. Keep in mind I got that tablet for $59 so I don't want to be to hard on it.
Which of these is better? Also if you put a micro as card in the insignia does that solve the memory issue and then make it better then then the hp stream 7 thanks
Nice review, Lon. The inclusion of the 1" larger screen and the HDMI seems to be at the cost of 16Gb of internal storage. Getting decent read/write values from a MicroSD card is really hit and miss compared to internal storage, so extra internal storage can be quite useful. It's internal R/W for the 16Gb drive is really odd at almost half the speed. One thing that might be helpful is how do you find the battery use over time when running something more demanding like Minecraft? I've found the Stream 7 goes through it's battery quite fast. Yikes.
I personally like the Insignia better, It has a Hdmi output, Has a bigger screen, I was stuck between the two of which one i wanted i'll be buying the Insignia.
Hey Lon, love your videos! I'm a college student and I am a computer science major and I love apple devices, I have a macbook pro and an iPhone 5s. But I wanna go with a windows tablet. I want to use it for note taking, ebook reading, accessing online homework, and accessing the school grading website - learningsuite. My question is about how good is the pen support on it? I would love to take notes on it, but only with a pen. Thanks!
how about mentioning how using headphones with that tablet results in terrible audio because of faulty design there in which the only way to get clear sound is to disable the left headphone audio and only use audio meant for both headphones or the right headphone, cuz that has been a major pain for me since i got it.
Lon...I just saw this tablet this morning and got me interested and for the price its decent. BTW what keyboard (brand) is that you are using? Is that bluetooth or usb connected?
I just picked up this, and the Winbook TW800. The Insignia appears to have a much better screen (brightness, color saturation), is 10 point capacitive touch, but is much heavier than the Winbook (you may not like this). The Insignia is constructed with a metal backing with a glass display. Strangely, the processor spec on the Insignia is incorrect - it actually uses the Z3735F.
Hi, great video. Question for you. I'm looking for a tablet for me and my 9 years old son but I don't want to spend a lot on it. Best buy now has the Insignia - Tablet - 8" - Intel Atom - 32GB . Would you recommend it? Or can you recommend a good tablet for me? I would really appreciate it
I'd like you to review a Contixo Q102 10.1 inch Quad Core with 32 gigs of storage space plus an extra Micro SD slot that can take a 64 gig card, Has 2 USB slots, one regular and one for use with OTG plus a regular AC input so you dont have to charge through USB, an HDMI slot. About 105 to 120 dollars on Amazon
i'd also like to know. I like how the cover on the hp 7 is removable and the battery is only plugged in, can't really see it because of the tape. But hp has a disassembly guide that shows the break down. www.hp.com/hpinfo/globalcitizenship/environment/productdata/Countries/_MultiCountry/disassembly_notebo_2014102119029107.pdf
Lon have you tested the Nextbook 8" windows tab from Walmart? I wonder if the two are the same or not and also there is another tablet out there the Winbook wt700 that has a full size USB 2 so you can charge and run other items like a mouse and keyboard, etc. The Winbook also comes in other sizes up to a 10 inch model. Also could one install Android on this tab. I think it would be a good thing to find out. I really don't know how one would do that though.
awesome review but why are they so cheap is it the intel soc? or the free os? i still think it just a little odd that these tablets are so cheap when compared to an ipad or a ms surface.
Yea it looks like we are on the verge of a computer revolution! Full fledged tablets for 99 dollars is crazy. I still remember those old Sony VAIO P that where over 800 dollars back in 2009.Its nice to see intel in the SOC game that brings x86 based computing to a phone or tablet
But does having the internal memory being 16gb crippling if you want to download a lot of programs If yes the the hp stream seems to be the better choice
So does this still do the thing where you cannot install metro apps to SD cards etc? So you are literally stuck with the gig or so left over from the OS partition for metro apps?
This tablet is really cool. Good for doing some low power office work, to save on electric bills. Except storage limitation. But with a nas, problem solved.
Would like to see a review of the Best Buy UnBranded 10.1 Windows 8.1 tablet. $149 black friday deal that many took advantage of, normally $199 and now $179 on sale. Pretty good deal.
***** Also in most stores www.bestbuy.com/site/windows-8-10-1-tablet-32gb-gray/9496117.p?id=1219418204377&skuId=9496117&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=9496117&extensionType=pla:g&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!93857882239!g!!52694434639&kpid=9496117&k_clickid=5746f103-582c-ae48-fb25-00000cb17a81&kpid=9496117&lsft=ref:212,loc:1&ksid=5746f103-582c-ae48-fb25-00000cb17a81&ksprof_id=12&ksaffcode=8392&ksdevice=c
Can you review the Kocaso tablet it's only 99 dollars. I'm debating on getting it for someone for Christmas but I've heard some pretty mixed reviews on it. I just don't want to get something that is so cheap and then regret it.
I wonder if windows 10 will change how these low end tablets with the atom processor and 1gb of ram function in terms of their storage. I hope they make it so we can install metro apps on the sd card. I want a cheap windows tablet with an 8-10 inch screen but only because we have the option to pop over to the desktop which is convenient and some video streaming sites I use only behave well on a desktop environment. Microsoft is talking about limiting lower end devices to modern apps only and doing away with the desktop. I know 7 inch and under screens will only have the modern ui but I also read somewhere a while ago that they were talking about devices with low memory being limited to modern ui as well. Until this confusion is cleared up I am thinking of holding off on buying anything. I really want one though so I don't know what I am going to do yet
I was wondering if you can download Chrome and Play Store (from Google) without problems...just purchased it and didn't realize those concerns until afterwards.....
Hello I have one question it would help me a lot if you answered. Okay so I downloaded music on my iPad and it's updated to iOS 8.1.1 but when I go to my iPhone 5s which is also to updated it doesn't show the music I downloaded i don't know what to do and it's really frustrating . Thank you
@edT1138 Dont quote me on this but i do believe Microcenter and walmart have their own in house branded 8.1 cheap tablets. (winpad and nextbook i think) and i do believe they both have mini hdmi and a full sized USB port, along with one micro usb for charge only. Walmart even has a 10.1 inch full windows 8 two in one pc with tablet and inclused full keyboard dock and non usb charger and it was 180 before christmas, using it right now, and still trying to figure out what magic and wizardy microsoft used to make it run this great with 1 gig and an eMMc ssd
size comparasion with hp stream7 was nice!! Im on archos9 with xp sp3 and was looking to upgrade to this or something similar. I have a quick question before i buy one, is anyone gonna release something better in the next month or so for same price? (Should I wait or buy now??).... Also, Hackintosh?? Anyone??
hey I think I have got an option to chard yur deice when its running in otg just run 2 hubs 1 powered (or that wil not make a diverent gat an usb cable which is a powering cable and a normal otg cable and connect that to the hubs conect your power and it will work it is working on an ipad! you will maybe have to install a driver and i dont really know of that drivers are for windows tablets too butmaybe it will work
Review is wrong, there is only 10gb internal space, 4 of it is usable, and it comes with a 16gb sd card. If you install office you'll have about 1 gig left to install programs and apps. I have one and really like it. Just be aware of the limited space.
wouldn't the fair comparison been with the Stream 8 inch ? I know you were doing price point and all but just saying ..personally not much diff in an 8 inch or 7 inch ot be that noticeable to me
How do you boot a live operating system through bios on this thing. The reason i bought a windows tablet was so i can run android, linux and windows but hell i cant even boot anything from usb on this thing. Any help?
ImmenseFox The Stream 7 (which I am responding on now) comes with a 1yr Office Personal 365 license and 1TB of cloud storage included... So not only "can you" - you get it by default! Love this thing, bought several more, put 128GB cards in them, one running Kali Linux, two on 8.1, one on 10 preview.
Kali has kernel issues. There's kernel patches to address it (it's really the slow mmc that causes the problem), but I haven't rebuilt a kernel - I just got lazy and installed XUbuntu on it. The patches are already there and run fine. In Windows, yes, Office runs fine. The Stream 7 comes with a one year Office 365 subscription even!
Given how cheap flash memory has become, I don't understand why these tablet manufacturers aren't putting more memory in these things. They want you to use their applications but they don't give you enough memory to do it! Its so frustrating!
I bet there will be plenty of store returns on tablets like these when people realize there isn't enough space to install the apps they want and that they can't even put apps on the microsd card. Looks like you can only install a few small apps on this and then use the sd card just for storing documents and music. I assume Microsoft wants more cheap tablets sold so they can make more money on Store apps, but they can't sell apps when there isn't enough room to install apps on cheap tablets. Microsoft either needs to allow saving apps to removable media or add a minimum storage requirement for tablets to be eligible for the free Windows license. Microsoft will lose some money due to reduced sales of apps and users will be upset when they notice there isn't enough space to install apps on these tablets with only 16GB drives.
***** If all you want to do is use a browser, then a Chromebook makes more sense. You can browse the net faster and without malware worries with a Chromebook. The point of a Windows machine is to be able to download and install Windows software. By the time you install all the Windows updates, Office 365 1 year subscription and updates to Office, there isn't going to be much room to install anything else. You can't install apps in "the cloud" or on a SD card, so the tiny disk drive makes this device not useful to many people. They should offer a 32GB and 64 model of these devices with 2GB RAM for bit more money. The next tier of Windows tablets after you move past these $99 models is a pretty severe price jump. The difference between 16 GB flash memory and 32-64GB is not that much money and the price difference between 1GB RAM and 2GB RAM also is not that much more money.
***** Yes, they will be enticed by the price and buy them based on the price, but I still think there will be a ton of returns soon after from people who didn't really understand how little drive space is usable. This tablet is good enough if all you do is use the browser and Office and a few *small* apps and you understand how little storage space is going to be available for installing any more software. Not sure why they don't just offer a second upgraded model for another $50 that has more storage space so there is something else to choose from. Why aren't there any 64GB Windows tablets with 2GB under $200? 64GB Acer Iconia is $250. Bumping the RAM and flash from 1GB/16GB to 2GB/64GB doesn't cost another $150 even at retail markup prices.
Can someone try this out I found a website that shows you how to make the sdcard download windows apps directly Link here : www.howtogeek.com/136404/how-to-install-windows-store-apps-to-an-sd-card-or-another-drive/
Mine did as well. Immediately troubleshoot after completely completely updating fixes it. Make sure to restart after disabling things like airplane mode
There is a mode in the Power Settings over whether it disconnects after going into sleep mode (to conserve even more power). Go into the Power Settings in the Settings and you should find that setting.
Right. Unfortunately quite a few devices out there will still be a bit shaky as Windows 10 really isn't the most stable OS (yet.) But I hope you have good fortune in your future purchases.
How do you bypass the "lock screen" and logon screen so that it never appears when the computer is powered on? What I need a Windows tablet to do is load one program by default without any hindrance such as an annoying "lock screen". I believe the newest iteration of this tablet has 32 GBs of storage, 2 GBs RAM, supports up to 2 TB via SDXC memory cards (when they become available), supports any capacity USB 2.0 Flash drive (currently tops out at 1 TB), and appears to have a dedicated charging port via micro USB. With the headphones jack it can be adapted to a 1/4 inch size. The user will be my older mentally retarded brother who has slowly lost his vision. He will forever be 4 years cognitively, regardless how old his body ages (he turned 52 in August). As a music player and audio book / story teller this type of machine is perfect for his needs. I'll have physical controls made that will sit in a custom-made protective case that he can't break. When he presses on the physical buttons they will activate the virtual buttons on custom-made .MP3 playback software. Getting past the annoyances of the "lock screen" and logon screen are the real hurdles for now.
you could by not turning off the device. I think by default the power button on Windows tablets/laptops puts it in standby and if you click the button it should turn on without the lock screen. Of course you could always install Ubuntu on it which by default doesn't have a lock screen.
