Inspecting and adjusting a Knott trailer brake
www.towingandtrailers.com/
When adjusting a trailer brake it is always good practice to remove the drum, check the parts inside the brake are all working correctly and then adjust the brakes at the wheel.
Once this is done then adjust the brake rod to give the correct adjustment on the coupling.
This is a simple guide showing the adjustment that is done on a knott trailer wheel brake.
all this work needs to be carried out with the main brake rod either slackened off or removed.
It is good to remove the drum and inspect it before adjusting.
Not shown in the video also operate the expander to make sure it and the brake cables are working correctly.

Thank you for all your videos. I have just renovated my 2008 Ifor 3.5T tipper by watching them all. A question though, my brake expander bolt had blue loctite applied. On the www new bolts are available and they all have red loctite pre-applied. If they have loctite on.... how is it possible to adjust as you say? Surely the adjustment should be done via the domed cable adjustment nut? Many thanks again, great channel.

Hi The Loctite is blue on all Genuine Knott Adjusters the ones you have seen on line are probably copy / None genuine products. We only stock Genuine Equipment when it comes to brakes as over the years we have seen many problems with copy equipment. I have seen copy equipment brake drums and bend backplates so the slight saving you have can cost an axle. The loctite is to create some resistance not to lock the adjuster so the adjustment is just a little stiff. You should never adjust the brakes on the cables as this opens the expander. if the expander is open you have less travel for your brakes and the force as the force the cables apply is also at its maximum as the cable is pulling straight backwards rather than at an angle. Hope this helps Towing and trailers ltd www.towingandtrailers.com
