I saw a Japan beekeeper, Japanese do not use smoke, instead they use a small air blower . They said it is to avoid bees from absconding the hive.
@FlowHive
@FlowHive 2 года назад
interesting to read, some bee species are more flighty and can be more inclined to abscond after being disturbed, so it might come down to this. -Kieran

Hello there! I have a question. Great work btw!. Can you add another flow hive supper on top as if you ‘d add another honey supper box? Or is it only one flow hive per hive?
@EternalDog
@EternalDog 5 лет назад
You'd be able to put multiple on a hive as they fit pretty much the same as just an extra box. But there would be very little gain from putting a second one on a hive. If you have them tending to a single flow box then you can just harvest as they fill up. Having a second box would have them filling up more at a slower rate. From what I've experienced, during a good nectar flow and good weather, if you have a couple of frames full or nearly full. When you harvest one, it will be about full again in 10-12 days. It would be better to have two hives with a flow box each, than having one hive with two flow box. You could however put a normal box of frames above the flow frame (a super or deep) to get honeycomb or to hold extra honey stores for later. The box above would take longer to fill though. As they would mainly tend to the flow frames as they are the first available.

can you encourage bees into the flow frames by bringing up a full honey frame to the top box to help get them started?
@FlowHive
@FlowHive Год назад
This can be done to provide a familiar resource for the bees to use, it shouldnt be necessary unless you have experienced a really long delay. In which case it was likely a result of the Flow Super being added to early. -Kieran

Does the use of smoke in the super change the flavor of the honey?

Where does the capped wax go? Do you need to remove it from time to time?

A couple of questions please...First, why do you not use two brood boxes? Second, are you saying it is necessary to inspect the frames in order to ensure a sufficient number of capped frames for a good harvest? Third, this video leads me to think the observation windows in Flow are less intended to be functional as confirmation for harvesting readiness and more as a way to casually observe the bees. Thank you.

I'll have a go at these...In Australia we generally don't need two brood boxes, specially in the Northern part of Australia where it stays warm all year. second + third: He says it isn't necessary ~ 15:00 but good to do when learning (I've seen elsewhere that if you crank open a frame not mostly capped, honey will run out into the hive......) you final point he addresses also, the window is pretty handy to tell quite a bit....(how many bees in your super, how much honey is in hive.) Well thats my take, but I haven't been doing this for long, so maybe someone who knows more will post a better answer :)

When would you need to replace a flow frame in the super (do I need to have backup frames)?

Since you do not remove the caps how does that affect the bees - do they remove the caps or do they fill the cells from the bottom?
@FlowHive
@FlowHive 3 года назад
Hey Liz, do you mean the wax capping of the honey cells? The bees chew through this once the honey has been harvested and they realise the cells are empty - clever bees!

Amazing.. I have a question : How I can use Flow Hive in case of desert area like Saudi Arabia?
@jo-han
@jo-han 5 лет назад
FlowHive can be used anywhere where there are bees. There are a lot of flow hives in the desert of Australia anywhere near flowering vegetation. But also in Canada and Sweden and Norway. Just ask your local beekeepers to how to adept to the local whether. It would be exactly the same as with any other hive. In a desert dry area you should in general make sure the bees have a good source of clean water within a 3 km radius or provide a safe source of water nearby. Bees drown easily so make sure bees don't fall in easily and can have a good grip. Also if you provide water nearby make sure there is lots of access for the bees so it does not get crowded with bees crawling on top of each other to reach the water because they will drown the bottom bees this way. Also make sure there is a good food source nearby within 5 km radius. In a complete sanded sand-dune desert where nothing grows, obviously bees won't do well. Ideal locations would be near agricultural areas or nature reserves. Look where the local farmers grow their crops, also find out when they have the flowering seasons of their crops. Could be year round, could be seasonal. If seasonal make sure you either feed sugar water or let the bees have enough honey stores before the flowers dry out.

Could you place a normal super on and then your flow super on top especially in this drought. Don from Cowra
@FlowHive
@FlowHive 4 года назад
Don, you can place a convention Langstroth box/ super on top of your Flow brood box (and beneath your Flow Super). But in times of dearth and drought conditions, where bees are struggling and the colony is not expanding, it is often common practice to reduce space in the hive (so the bees can best defend the colony against pests). We recommend that you speak with local beekeepers as they can offer you the most suitable beekeeping methods in your region and climate. - Leah.

Do you guys NOT recommend trying the lift the flow frames out of the super by using the wires? Or is this ok?
@FlowHive
@FlowHive 2 года назад
Hi Brad, Dont lift them in this way as it could do a couple of things, first the wire could beak under the weight, or it could damage the area where it connects with the plastic. A tip for removing them is to take off the Key Access Cover, and the Cap, to then remove hold the Flow Frame here and use a J hive tool at the non harvest end. -Kieran
