Inspecting some HBM ER25 Collets and trying out some bue nano inserts

To celebrate my 3 year channel birthday I bought myself a set of ER25 collets from Dutch reseller HBM. In this video I try to find out if they are good enough to keep, for when I start machining my own collet chuck for on my vintage Karger lathe. Oh, and I also start testing some blue nano ccmt inserts in this video.

The collets on Ebay: ebay.to/2Z8g4CJ
The collets of Amazon: amzn.to/2EVXeqT
FYI: I am trying to make a little money for my youtube hobby through the Banggood affiliates program. Follow the link below, buy something you NEED and I'll earn some commission. Doesn’t cost you anything extra. You're basically taking money out of Banggood's pockets and putting it in mine :)

A good place to start would be fix the spindle bore then worry about the collet chuck.
@robbiestevens1158

It's interesting that you have a better finish up the front, maybe try giving the tip more relief below the tip? Swarf may be getting trapped and marring the finish and the smaller the diameter the less clearance you have on the boring bar below the cutting edge. Also although it may increase chatter, could try cutting upside down on the opposite side of the bore? Love your videos!

That's an interesting though. I'll try that out and report back later.

I have those collets in 32mm and they are very good. The small collets have a reduced slit by design. You really have to grind the internal holder bore with a tool post grinder.

Not a machinist, but couldn't you clamp the outside of the collet chuck in a four jaw chuck. Then you could adjust the outer dimension for zero run-out. Then cut the internal bore and get a chuck with zero run-out.
@r8nable
@r8nable 5 лет назад
It's the low cutting speed what causes the problem. At 600 rpm ø25 has a surface speed of about 47 m/min. And then decreasing as the diameter gets smaller. You should probably have a surface speed of above 200 m/min on those inserts. Which means 2500 rpm at ø25.
@Rolingmetal
@Rolingmetal 5 лет назад
I know it's a bit slow for carbide but it has worked out in the past. Like someone suggested I think the chip build up might be the reason the surface finish got a lot worse deep inside the collet chuck.

Gday, the blue nano inserts I’ve had great success, I found the there really good on harder materials, I think they are bloody great, I use a battery drill to drive my compound slide to keep the same speed and find this helped a lot, the collets look a hell of a lot better then the banggood experiment. There is a relationship between the collet nut and the taper of the front of the collet . Depending how tight the thread is the nut will float on the collet or it will deflect the collet to one side depending on how close the overall tolerances are. Try to tap the high side of the collet nut to improve your run out or look into chasing the threads to ease the nuts position. You must have a precision carbide cutter to be sure you are measuring the arbor run out and not the rod you have placed in it.
@Rolingmetal
@Rolingmetal 5 лет назад
You are right, after boring out the collet chuck the inside might no longer run concentric with the thread on the outside. and this will force the collet nut to push the collet to one side. This seemed tp be the problem with the er32 collet I reground last year.
@chrisstephens6673
@chrisstephens6673 5 лет назад
Also you might have to shorten the threaded portion. You might find that you can't get full closure range before the nut bottoms.

Carbide tends to leave a better finish at a higher speed deeper cut and slower feed
@dalegriggs5392
@dalegriggs5392 5 лет назад
rM, I’m gonna stand by my previous comments on the Blue Nano inserts. You cannot expect good finish results with any carbide tool at such a low speed. I know your lathe is limited to 600rpm but that’s just not fast enough for carbide cutting. Also a hand fed cross slide always gives irregular finishes results. Even using a drill with an adapter will improve most finishes. It gives a steady, consistent feed. Something turning by hand cannot accomplish. I recently ungraded my collet set with a 25 piece set. They are marketed by an American company but were probably China made to their specs. I had an 8 piece Banggood set prior to this. The difference between the two sets are quite remarkable. The Banggood set was very inferior. Their quality control leaves a lot to be desired, to say the least. I here you on those aggravating shrink packaging covers on each collet. They are a fright to remove. I guess that’s better the Banggood practice of throwing everything together into a cheap zip lock bag. Thanks for the review and Happy Birthday!

Good review video. :) You should maybe try and grind up a HSS boring bar. Run it slow and use plenty of oil. I think you are loosing your finish down the back of hole when the chips start piling up. I saw “This Old Tony” the other day with a battery drill driving his compound slide to get the feed nice and even. Not sure you could get the drill to go slow enough for the HSS boring bar. I also saw an old tool post grinder on eBay the other day. It went for more than the cost of my lathe :( Anyway enjoyed watching.
@Rolingmetal
@Rolingmetal 5 лет назад
I once ground a internal threading tool, it took forever on my little grinder :) I think you might be right about the chips piling up inside the collet chuck. I'll try boring it again with a smaller boring bar. I actually made an adapter to driver the top slide handle but unfortunately my cordless drill has died since then. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SBOdNKegaPU.html

I too have the ER collets from HBM, and they are miles better than any other import collets. My set does have a maximum runout of 1/100, most collets do better. The main culprit in a ER setup is usually the nut. I replaced all my collet nuts with the ones that have the ball bearing in them (those can be found at arc euro trade in the UK) This makes a difference which is hard to believe. I suggest you get a colletchuck from HBM and a nut from arceurotrade (the one with the ball bearing) and you may just get yourself a setup that is indeed 1/100 mm 'pure' or better. That banggood stuff isn't worth throwing in the bin, let along using it! At the low speeds on your 'old lathe' you shouldn't be using carbide insert tooling. These inserts are designed for heavy cuts at high speeds. They usually do pretty lousy on low speeds. HSS will do a lot better. If you really want to clean up that collet chuck, I suggest you lap it. That will get you a lot closer ..... Oh and WD40 is a good cutting fluid for aluminium.... it's pretty crummy for steel Paddy

HBM are usually Indian made stuff, not entirely Chinese. I must also add that HBM, a Dutch operation, bulk buys most of the stuff from lesser Indian/Chinese manufacturers and some better quality ones would not sell to HBM, Zither in India and Huhut in China are just some example because of the pricing. The emphesis on thes eoperations is just to make a lot of money. The quality of the stuff sold is evidence of how cheaplyand badly these stuff are made. As for these ' nano ' whatever inserts, I have two sets of them, DCMT 07s and CCMT 06s and they geometry is incorrect. Neither of them fits either my sandvik nor Glanz tools. The sad thing is that they don't even fit the cheap Chinese one that came with them from bangood. I have some Iscar and Sandvik inserts that fit all the insert holders properly so the problem is with the inserts. If I were you I'd grind some M42 HSS boring bars with a nice radius and I bet you will have a great finish. Thanks for sharing.

Brother, you don't want to put WD-40 on your collets!!! The last thing you want on them is oil. You want them as clean as possible, I'd clean them with brake clean.
@FrenziedFruitcake
@FrenziedFruitcake 5 лет назад
That's not entirely true, you don't want any oil on the inside of the collet as this reduces gripping strength on the tool. However a light coat of oil on the outside of the collet is desired as it reduces friction against the taper, as the collet is driven in by the collet nut. This increases clamping force.
@Steve_Just_Steve
@Steve_Just_Steve 5 лет назад
@@FrenziedFruitcake yeah a light coat of oil like the one from your hands when inserting the collet is sufficient, but not necessary definitely not two squirts.

@legal pitbull No, I live in OK it's seriously about 100% all year. I have a non temp controlled shop and I constantly fight it. But I definitely don't use WD for corrosion protection and no matter what I use I thoroughly clean it off the collet before use and wipe collet down with it after. You don't want to lube something when what you're wanting is for that thing to grip as well as possible.
