Kevin Whately, star of Inspector Lewis on PBS's MASTERPIECE Mystery, discusses the evolving relationship between his character's partner, Hathaway, and his mentor, Morse.
I appreciate everything Kevin Whately has to say, and agree with him. Having the hindsight that Fox didn't continue the dynasty, I wish very much Lawrence Fox had gone on to his own series.
I was initially ticked off as I wanted a full episode, but I love Whately and Fox so I gave it a chance, and absolutely love this series, the editing, etc., which highlights the almost paternal relationship between Lewis and Hathaway... Lovely writing, and Whately's gentle, down to earth, presence in the Morse series made the gruesome scenes tolerable...and so right through to Lewis and thence to Hathaway. Yikes, the last comment was two years ago!!!
Interesting idea: Morse and Hathaway together in place of Morse and Lewis. Meaby something for the writers or even Collin Dexter to work that out in some sort of way.
That'd be kind of hard, seeing as John Thaw passed away in the early 2000s, and Hathaway's parents probably weren't even together when he was working as a detective.
A new series will never happen. The wokist hierarchy that runs Oxford University would never allow filming on their campus as long as Lawrence Fox is in the cast. Cancel culture is a ruthless reality in the halls of academia.
