Dear Amazing Grace: Please accept my deepest and most heartfelt wishes for your peace and comfort in your grief upon the loss of your sweet daughter. My son is now 36 years old, but I can go back in a split second in my mind and experience his presence in my arms, his warmth, his lovely smile, and that special odor that only babies have. He is my precious gift, as your daughter is to you! I grew up as a very young child in Montclair, New Jersey, USA, in the early to mid 1950s. My mother and I walked everywhere in our small city, enjoying the residential areas with their magnificently beautiful and sweet smelling old fashioned bushes. We walked to the busy main thoroughfare as well, later with my baby sister in her carriage. My mother always, but always, took her from her carriage and held her in one arm and grasped my hand with her other hand when shopping inside a store! When, in my innocence, I asked my mother why we didn't leave my baby sister outside as most other mothers did, she wisely replied it was not safe to leave a child outside on the sidewalk alone...dangerous events could happen! And they did, certainly in those old days as well as now. As I grew older, I realized the sagacity of my mother's words! And then I could never understand how a caring, thinking mother could take such a great chance! I wish you a continued peaceful life despite your hardship. If I may say this to you, I think that your daughter dwells with the Angels and with Our Good Lord in Heaven now, no worries, no illness, and no pain any longer! 🕊💜🕊

@@elainelessack what comforting words! Thank you. Yes, I always carried my daughter and could never understand how a parent could dangle their child in a car seat hanging down by the floor. So detached from you and in such a precarious position that anything could drop on them. Astounding how times were when a parent would leave a baby alone outside a store. Your mom was wise. 💕🐝💕

In the 1970's my mother would line our carriage up in the row with many others outside our town's department store. Mothers coming in would signal to you if such and such a carriage was crying. They all pitched in and helped. Nobody ever questioned the safety of leaving us all outside in the fresh air. Unthinkable that anybody in our town would even imagine harming a hair on our heads. I do not know when this changed. I am sorry to hear your lost your child, to be predeceased by your own must be a cruel grief to a parent. I wish you well.

Dear Amazing Grace, I suffered with my parents the loss of my baby sister and only brother - five years apart in their 40's. My heart still breaks for them as it does for your loss. Their is no loss greater than the loss of a child - it changes your life forever. Now my parents have gone and I believe they are with their beloved children. Most people say that time heals but my experience thirty plus years later is that it does not. You have my profound sympathy and prayer that you are able to find some solace knowing that your daughter is with you forever in your heart and in spirit.

I was born in 59 also. My 2 brothers and sister and I walked almost a mile to town in Montana snow for school. Mother always had great breakfast for us and we were always so happy warm, fit,and ready for the whole day by the time we made it to school. miss that!

I was born in 1957 I walked to school and back every day 39 miles all up hill with the snow and wind in my face, all I had to eat was a slice of bread a week, I lived on one penny per year and still had change left over, life was hard back then but it was fun.

Whenever I read of this time period, I always think it must've been wonderful that women then could do that. What a pity that it's not possible any more. At least not in the UK or in North America. In the part of Europe where I live, it's still possible. I see many mothers park their babies right outside a shop and even a café! As far as I know, there've been no reports of stolen babies, but I always feel a bit anxious when I see an unattended baby in a pram or pushchair.

Yes, my mother left us all outside in a prom. But that was in Dublin quite some time ago and everyone had a lot of babies so no point stealing one!

In 60s and 70s mums used to let babies in front of shops over here too. Our eldest one was stolen from in front of a shop by some disturbed lady.

It was safe back then. I was born in 1943 - my mother would leave me outside the house on the front lawn with my small dog while she cleaned. She never had a thought of anything bad happening and nothing ever did. Sadly today that is no longer so...

ymimad49, it is no safe less now than then. The rate of child abductions has remained relatively constant. In fact, in the U.S., at least, the crime rate is nearly at an all time low. What has changed is the public perception of the phenomenon of child abduction due to far greater media coverage of the few child abductions that do occur plus television and movies dramatizing child abductions.

Here in Perth there is a precise date when people stopped sleeping out on verandahs in summer - summer of 1961, when Eric Edgar Cooke began killing people in their homes (he had previously killed by running people down with his car)

I'm also really appreciative of this playlist being this neat and tidy myself. That's also why i chose this YT channel to watch (sometimes even binge-watch, if I'm completely honest..) this series, which I for one wouldn't even have been privy to if it wasn't for it appearing on my YT feed BTW... Countries differ. So do times. Where crime is not dealt with - enough police - and morality wanes, and families can't live on one salary due heavy taxation, crimes go up.

@@bluegent7 , You seem to come from a country where policing is a positive thing. In my country it is not necessarily so. One-salary families are also rather scarce. Morality is an altogether more difficult question, isn't it?

Having watched another episode last night, I said the same thing to my husband today. It's surprising how dated it all looks, isn't it? It feels like only yesterday, but looks like another century. And I agree with another viewer, it doesn't all feel like progress. But that is a sign of our age! Every generation feels the same.

@Andy Peek It depends where you lived then; they had martial law and a terrible economic crisis in Poland in the 1980s, and what about the war in Yugoslavia in the 1990s, for example. The real s..-hole in the 20th century was during the Great Depression, Fascism, the Stalinist era in the east and the two WWs. Nothing compares to that, Sir.

I agree..every generation fears for the next. People in my generation had things the way we wanted them...the coming generation will have things the way they like. For me, the only thing about being old is that I won’t live to see it!

Here, in central Europe, we used to leave babies in prams outside shops too. Nowadays people do not do it because, I suppose, it is not permitted by the law. I doubt the streets were much safer 30 years ago, though. I used to see quite a number of flashers on my way to school who I was not afraid of because they never, well, physically bothered anyone. Today this kind of pervert behaviour in public is fraught with danger, I think ;-) I believe we should not demonise today's society.

pertelote 45, you are absolutely correct. Child abduction is no more common now than ever, and it has always been extraordinarily rare. In fact, society is far less violent today than it was when this was produced, and especially in the prior decades.

@@inkyguy I remember several truly violent and run-down no-go areas in my city in the 1980s; today they are full of tourists, cafes, restaurants and I would not be afraid to walk those streets at night. One needs to be street-wise, that's all. Cheers :-)
