In this video, I'll take you some of my fave autumnal fabric types, with tips for sewing, pattern recommendations, and sneaky peeks of my fabric stash. Let's kick off the best season for sewists!
Kantha quilt: My fave supplier is sadly no longer on Etsy, but I would recommend this shop as an alternative: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/VillageW...

As the proud mom of @stephsewn and the recipient of that lovely kantha jacket, I can vouch for the delightful softness of the fabric. It adds a bit of warmth without weight, and it's so colorful!

As a quilter of over 30 years, thanks for saying something about not using heirloom quilts. Give them to someone who does care about them, along with what you know, I.e. provenance, of the piece. It matters. And I’ve always loved cotton velour……glad to know it’s back, but I’ve worn it anyway! Thanks for the vid.

Whenever I see what are CLEARLY old folk quilts hacked up on tiktok to make a vest that is worn once... makes me want to cry!

I'm wondering if you have any suggestions regarding old quilts. I have one that was my grandfather's. Some sections are in good shape, but other places are very worn and there are even a few holes. I'm not sure what seems more sad: cutting it up to use the good parts or leaving it in my cupboard for another 10 years. It's really not in good enough shape to display 🤷

Love that green velour fabric. I think if it was me, I would make a duster type jacket with big sleeves. I live in Denmark where the winters a grey and dark, so I often find that wrapping my self in colour help me get through those grey days. About the quilted items - I'm here for it! I've made several quilted jackets and vests both in new and second hand fabrics. I always quilt my fabric myself, so I know what quality product I'll end up with. I'm not a great fan of those poly - battings that are often used in pre-quilted fabrics. Instead I use a mix of organic cotton and soy fibres and for this winter I'm contemplating wool if I can find it. I'll look forward to seeing your quilted jacket. It looks like a lovely pattern and I really love the print on your fabric.

Thanks so much for the idea! A duster jacket could be really, really cool. I also hear you on the poly batting- Merchant & Mills luckily gets their quilting made with cotton, but I can imagine the poly ones feeling pretty sticky. Would love to see your quilted makes- definitely tag me on insta if you ever post them!

Wrap me in corduroy and call it Christmas! Yum. Your leftover yellow/fuchsia kantha would make a nice throw pillow cover or vest. You could make a sleeveless kimono pattern. Making things with your fabrics is fun for us viewers.

Your vlog was so interesting. I learnt so much! I’m looking forward to seeing what amazing ‘properly wearable’ items you make. I’ve never heard of kantha fabric but it’s beautiful and I love that it has had a previous life. IF I ever have a definite plan to make a quilt type jacket, that’s what I’ll be using. But until it’s a definite I won’t be ordering them I promise. I loved your Mum’s jacket. 😀

I definitely will. I’m being much more focused this year in using the fabrics I have or refashioning existing garments and then wearing what I make. It feels so much better. But I do love a cosy jacket. So maybe as the weather gets cooler (less wet! 😱), a quilted jacket in kantha could be the answer.

Always playing catch-up on RU-vid, but I just watched this one and had to comment. Really enjoyed the video, but I was especially interested to hear about Kantha quilts. I was not at all familiar with these. Such a great option for a quilted garment that isn't too thick and warm. They look crazy cool, and I am going to be busily researching. Also that Merchant and Mills quilted block print fabric is the fabric of dreams. I look forward to seeing what you make!

Hello, I am glad to hear you are feeling better and happy first day of autumn, too! I love all of your fabrics you have chosen for the fall season. I have bought quilted fabric from Estate sales and used them for sewing tote bags, since it is never enough to make a jacket. But I am hoping to score some more in a larger yardage to make a pants and button up shirt PJ set. I think that would be so cute and comfy for the winter. Look forward for more to come with your sewing plans!

Awesome video. I found some corduroy pants at the thrift store that I need to resize and I am excited the cooler weather is coming. I live in Northern VA, and we get half crunchy leaves half damp rainy autumn! 😂 I actually made the AllWell cardigan quilted cardigan/coat in a quilted fabric and I am so excited to wear it soon. I also used bias binding on the pockets and outside, but I serged the individual pieces and topstitched them down as a design choice.

I'd make pajamas from that velour! You'd get to wear them lots and feel very fancy at bed time. Also the corduroy have you thought about a coat or jacket? I made my eldest a coat with a cape out of green corduroy and interlined it with some woolen wadding and added a satin lining into it and she loved it - it is now my youngest daughter's coat ❤

Loved this video, even if most of the fabrics you mention aren't really my thing. I'm not ready to return to the swishy soundtrack of corduroy trouser legs brushing past each other as I walk, acting like an advanced warning system alerting anyone in the vicinity to my approach 😂 I made a velour faux jumpsuit three or four years ago (I affectionately refer to it as my Juicy Couture tracksuit, even though the top part is a cami). The answer to how many times am _I_ going to wear wide leg velour trousers was many, many times. The trousers were my favourite secretly comfortable thing to wear to the office in the Beforetimes, so they got a lot of play. Mine are in black though, so they are a little more stealthy than yours would be if you did use that lively fabric.

I used John Kaldor Carlotta Panne Velvet fabric given to me by Minerva and wrote a fairly detailed post on it; they don't seem to stock it in black anymore, but it looks like it's still available elsewhere. I hardly ever wear anything poly but I really rate this fabric.

I actually like to make my binding. I use the continuous binding method, which let's you get a load of binding out of a relatively small square of fabric. A 10 inch square can give you about 100 inches of tape depending on thickness! Here is a tutorial: blog.seamwork.com/tutorials-tips-tricks/continuous-bias-tape-tutorial/

I have a fabric query I hope maybe you can help with: I'm finding it really hard to find a heavyweight (300+ GSM) cotton French Terry fabric in brighter colours (especially like saffron or teal). All the fabric stores I have found online have very limited colour ranges, usually dark colours or light pastels, which are not my style. I'm hoping to make a cosy autumn hoodie (using Chalk and Notch Page hoodie pattern). Do you know any fabric sellers that would have this kind of heavy French Terry in bright colours? 🙂🙏
