Bernie Wrightson was on another level,such a master of form,light & shadow.. Here in the UK back in the 70's we didn't have an abundance of comic shops but our local newsagent would get a bundle of random American comics once a month.. In 1972,at the age of nine,whilst feverishly delving through the bundle I found issue No6 of Swamp Thing & thus became a lifelong fan of Mr Wrightson's visual genius.. I'm fortunate enough to own an original page of artwork from Swamp Thing No10 which is a most treasured possession but to own a page from Frankenstein would be the "Holy Grail" indeed.. My school library actually had the Frankenstein book. I kept it checked out for so long the librarian told me I needed to give someone else a chance to check it out.

Yep! I was there, too, totally blown away. I first saw his works in Creepy and Eerie. I still have them. I still have "The Studio" (? name) with Bernie, Jeff Jones, and Kaluta. Great memories of Wrightson! One of the best in ink!

I met him at a con and asked him if he ever used guides or french curves for his large strokes but nope, it's all freehand. Legend.

Oh my god Wrightson is just on a different level!! Also thank you so much for mentioning Franklin Booth. Haven‘t consciously looked at his work, but now he sure is up there with my favorites!

This is a book I remember referencing back in high school when I would draw at my dad's house. Absolutely LOVE Wrightson's work. I got the version of Frankenstein that he illustrated and just love looking at all the images.

I have the Illustrated Frankenstein and I always marvel at the glassware, beakers and such. It's amazing.

I have also inked one of hid Frankenstein and swamp thing...it was really really good... he's one of my inspiration for inking comics

Those are incredible -- I loved him just from the Swamp Thing and Creepy stuff, didn't know about Frankenstein. Does anyone know how long it took him to do one of those full page pieces?

Per Wrightson: "I've always had a thing for Frankenstein, and it was a labor of love. It was not an assignment, it was not a job. I would do the drawings in between paying gigs, when I had enough to be caught up with bills and groceries and what-not. I would take three days here, a week there, to work on the Frankenstein volume. He always seemed to call his titled comics/books "Berni" but people often add the "e" out of habit. "Berni Wrightson Master of the Macabre" was a series of comics put out by Pacific Comics in the 80's, collecting his horror stories. Wonderful stuff. Painfully slow though, from what I heard. You would have to have to have remarkable patience to work to his level!

What about Gustave Dore? In my opinion, his skill is unsurpassed even by the greats like Booth and Wrightson. It's undeniable that both Booth and Wrightson are influenced by Dore.

Booth, Wrightson, and Virgil Finlay are in the top 3 of all time. Dore is up there too. But we have to take into account the engravers who worked on his images as well.

Stop building your business off Frank Frazetta Watts. Let the people enjoy Frazetta on their own, like generations before second rate business people like yourself could get a following on RU-vid on the backs of others. The joy and imagination at looking at Artists like Frazetta without all the analytical RU-vid crap is being lost by people like you that couldn’t do it themselves.
