A luxury trunk build - this project is Part 1 (the exterior) of a 2 Part video (the interior to come next) and is inspired by the gorgeous Louis Vuitton Trunk - Courrier 110 Malle.
Materials used - 10mm poplar plywood glued and nailed cask, pink oak slats, oak base frame with aluminium plate, solid brass nails (riveted or clinched), solid brass closures, lock, corners and corner angles, coated checkerboard canvas exterior, luxury goatskin leather border and edges, thick bridle leather hand stitched handle (with edge paint) and concealed steel opening hinges.

I was tempted because my friend is black and she is often asked if her bag is fake. People just immediately assume they are. Even though I'm white, I still get people asking me if my bag is real. So I thought why should I spend so much money on these bags? So in the end I chose to buy it at *condup* . Even if it is not the original, some replicas can have special emotional value because they are connected to specific memories

Not sure how many times I’ve come back to rewatch this. I restore antique Louis Vuitton, Goyard trunks so I’ve done all of this individually. I’ve learnt so much from this one video. It’s filled in a lot of blanks I had of the techniques. Is this work? Hobby? Cheers. Darren.

Hi Darren, thanks for your encouragement - it's just a hobby for me but I have been woodworking and leatherworking for a long time now....how interesting that you restore trunks - is that enjoyable work? Yes trunk making is harder than it looks - the workshops in France start with pre-drilled leather and plywood and will have access to the right tools and materials which was certainly not the case here but I managed to end up with something fairly close I think and I am really happy with it...warm regards

Hello Sir, love your work. I made a live edged desk for my wife’s office and I’ve always wondered about making a trunk for her. I have a trunk that’s 110 years old that I restored. I wanted to ask, can you buy that Louis Vuitton genuine leather?
@boreoff
@boreoff 4 месяца назад
Hi there, thanks very much, are you referring to the trunk borders? LV doesn't use leather, they use a canvas or for the borders they use something called Lozine which is a vulcanized fibre. Both can be sourced - have a look on Etsy for some good quality 1mm checkerboard canvas. I used French leather for the borders which I think is nicer than Lozine. Hope that helps...cheers and bon courage with you project...

thanks for watching, good solid brass closures are hard to find - a few viewers have already asked - there is a link in the comments already to a company that makes them, not cheap though. @@boreoff Thanks for replying! I may have to accept cheap imitations to keep price down then, but will see what the budget allows! I'm studying Model Design, a course aimed at producing props and set pieces for screen and stage, but some students in the past have gone into museum and conservation work. Currently designing a 1940's era time machine based on luggage of the period and combining that with some of the crypto devices used during WW2 for inspiration on the "working mechanisms". Looking forward to your part 2 video! What are you planning to do with the nails you've knocked through?

And THAT is what I do every day for work. People call you an artist but to me this isn't art, just good craftsmanship. It's nice mind you but as an LV worker I'd appreciate if you'd used a different canvas or, using the same techniques, made your own model instead fo loosely copying one. We copied enough alread as it is we don't need youtubers to join the mix even though it technically is good advertising for our products.

@@mmgodfreyI have an awesome job that I love and I make very decent money for it, nothing you could say could ever bother me. Be rude all you want pal. All I said is that it's my literal job what that man is doing and technically LV workers are ready to make a coffret like this in rougjly 6 weeks. So I just wish people wouldn't act like it's extraordinary. Well done but man stop thinking this is extraordinary when it's not. Those skills have been around hundreds of years. If you praise that youtuber, you should praise ALL the LV workers who do the literal same job every single day from 6am to 1.30pm.

Hi, thanks for your comment, how interesting that you work as a trunk maker, that must be very rewarding - good for you. I have always wanted to visit your wonderful workshops...I spent most of my career working behind a desk - I am a keen amateur who builds stuff mainly for relaxation to clear my head...in another life ...as the say! The inside of the trunk is my own design - I thought it would be fun to do something different there. Just finishing it off now. Bien à vous.

@camilledabert to you this isn’t art. But to some of us it is. Regarding the choice of coated canvas, I respect your sentiment. I do. If it helps, Coco Chanel believed imitation is the highest form of flattery. For those who don’t know and for the record, The European General Court cancelled LV’s trademarks for chequerboard print because ultimately you can’t claim rights over squares. Additionally he didn’t use branding, making this is not a counterfeit item. So he is free to do whatever he wants and I actually think using this style of canvas attracted more clicks/views and will inspire others to work on their own trunks or appreciate the ones they buy or own. But your point on him using the design of the box itself… to my knowledge a box is not proprietary and no one invented that. Boring man - take us on a journey with your luggage! I want to see steamers, with drawers, coffee tables that open into glassware storage and drinks, lockable bedside tables with secret drawers.. I want to make my own monogram canvas design! And build a bedside table that I can lock toys in!
