Handbag Clinic is a luxury service in London that restores, authenticates, and resells designer handbags and shoes. Its senior artisan, Daniel Thompson, restores a vintage Louis Vuitton vanity case that was used to store things like cosmetics while traveling in the early '60s. In its current state, where the interior is no longer functional, it is estimated to be valued at 1,000 to 1,500 pounds. Handbag Clinic cofounder Charlotte Staerck walks us through the process of restoration, which will make the case functional again and raise its value to 3,000 pounds ($3,862).

Fun fact items that are not refurbished by Louis Vuitton themselves don't sell very well on the resale market. And what's more interesting is if someone refurbish items out side lv and let's say u want to take it back to lv to get redone, they don't accept it.

This was a great restoration but I just want to point out that even the legendary Louis Vuitton cuts corners. I expected the trim leather on the outside to actually be sewn into the cover, not glued. I didn’t know the LV printed cover was canvas instead of leather. I see that as another corner cut that they get away with just because it’s Louis Vuitton. I see the interior being glued in as a big corner cut. Anybody with basic leather working skills could copy this exact case, use leather instead of canvas, and actually sew the trim and interior panels onto the case, would make a far superior product. There are smaller names, mom and pop shops, out there that blow these “designer” brands away in terms of quality for half or even three times less the price of a LV. Saddleback Leather for instance. He’s getting bigger, but his quality goes miles above Louis Vuitton in terms of durability and aesthetics.

Well said but unfortunately a lot of people see them selves having more value when wearing an expensive brand. To me the print and colors are not good looking and yes, they can get away with selling you plastic just because the name brand. Even if I were rich I wpuldnt buy these kind of non sense.

I really appreciated this project, thank you for sharing LV products are what they are, and in this short video clip doco-commentary, I like how much care and attention is put into keeping with the origin integrity of the piece. I’m certain the owner/ the piece itself will enjoy another 60yrs of enjoyment, of which by then it would be classified a classic and hopefully the custodian at that time could qualify to get it serviced by an authorised LV agent if the owner chose that path I think it’s fantastic restoration companies like this exist, I like to see the restoration industry aiming for standards excellence

This should be sent to Paris and repaired by Louis Vuitton as this is a vintage LV item. Extreme care must be taken including down to the type of leather! If this is appraised by LV and any non authentic material used to repair could destroy all value

I agreed. I have a jewellery box my late mum gave me years ago - it's a mini one that you can take a few little bits on holiday with you (it's actually my only one because I'm not really big on jewellery). It's leatherette (faux leather, pleather?) and it has little velvet style trays in it. I think it cost her a few pounds in a market. It's MINT even now, despite always being out and being used. So I'd say that, if you look after your stuff, even cheap things can last a very long time. My family never had much money so I've always been a 'make do and mend' sort. I'd NEVER be able to spend over £3k on a BAG! even if I were rich; I'd never spend that on a CAR even!

I still can see how people like to buy gold , silver jewellery as they maintain their value even in the long term. It’s like an investment. @@Lovepreet_Singh93 Precisely - when I read about a celebrity telling me not to drive my car when I NEED to (I live in a rural area), yet they use a private jet all the time and tell me not to buy clothes (I don't unless I need them), yet they spend £50 thousand pounds on a DRESS for ONE night at the oscars or something, I get so cross. I think it's terrible these people waste money like that instead of trying to help people who are homeless or animal rescues, etc. I always donate to local charities because I KNOW the money gets spent on those who need it - whether people or animals. If I was as wealthy as so many of these celebrities I would donate so much of my money.

They get so much money in donations but won’t help the less fortunate. And they too like to preach others. I too give my old clothes, shoes , blankets etc to homeless people. And every year for my birthday i donate 20kg wheat flour to an organisation which help feed poor people stuck in hospitals. I try to help as much as i can. It’s nice to know that you too are somewhat like me and likes to help as much as you can. It was really nice to meet you. When they restored the pleated pocket on the inside, they didn't use the same leather, or at least didn't dye it. In the original, it was the same honey color as the rest of the attachments, but when they replaced it, it was the same color as the sides and bottom.

This is NOT an authentic Louis Vuitton product. It's a counterfeit. A hard-sided Louis Vuitton beauty case would not have any stitching but nails. The hardware is full brass so would not be silver in color.

Does anybody still see them when travelling ? In the 80’s they were everywhere , particularly the Delsey and the Samsonite ones but it looks like women do not use them anymore . Am I right or it is just an impression ?

I think it depends on your luggage. When traveling with a trunk it was easier to keep your cosmetics and toiletries separate from clothing/shoes... as most trunks were stored in cargo bays.. then as luggage (suitcases) became more popular they still weren't deep enough to carry everything together. So vanity cases were still used. Modern luggage, however, are not only deep enough to hold a vanity case, but also come with extra compartments. So having is structured vanity case as this one my be redundant when packing, but if one still wanted to keep their toiletries/cosmetics separate they now use toiletry bags. Vanity cases are still used, but I think it's more based on preference rather than necessity.

Not well made in the beginning if it can become this. Amazing that people don't realise how little leather is in a Vuitton bag. A bag than cost less than 80 euros to make usually, sometimes cheaper. This is basically a wooden box covered in resin coated canvas with little leather trims and some brass. Cost of materials almost nothing. It's ONLY the name that sells this, not it's quality.

The voiceover said the piece is 60 years old. It's in decent shape considering the age and how well used it is -- the corners needed replating due to use. After 6 decades, and ONLY those straightforward and doable repairs plus some cleaning, NOT a complete restoration/rebuild of barely held together canvas, I would say that's a well made and quality piece.

The older LV still has leather parts and made from better raw material. Lately, too much finishing and emboss. The built quality? So-so. That's why LV is the low tier of luxury brands.

At least Hermes is still trying to pronounce the natural look of the raw material and I think it's worth the price, considering very good raw material is kinda rare these days.

I worked with someone who made their leather clothes and the waste counted for 80% of the product as they only use a small % of the skins and had to be burnt, not cool! I would not suggest you see how the crocodile skins are harvested it's violent and brutal and should exist no where on earth.

I hate it when unofficial estimates are given factually... If LV restored this or it was original and in perfect condition, I'm sure it's worth 4k but doubt this restored one is worth close to that if it's even real

I can buy a vanity case from the Goodwill for 5 dollars and it would serve the EXACT same purpose. On a semi-related subject, there's a channel about guys who restore shoes and they did a video about St. Laurent shoes. After taking the shoe apart, it was discovered that St. Laurent uses the same quality heel on their shoes, that you would find at a Walmart. Point to my comment is, don't waste your money of "high end" brand. They're stuff is just as crap as the low end retailer brand.

Como un producto tan carísimo se puede estropear de esa manera tan brutal, parece que ha estado debajo del agua. Productos de marcas no tan famosas resisten mejor el paso del tiempo, y la restauración ha sido toda todo a base de pegamento ningún elemento cosido , ahora se q nunca compraría uno
