What does it mean to create an opportunity for stability and safe housing? Opportunity Village in Eugene, Oregon, is an effective, self-governed #tinyhomecommunity for formerly homeless individuals and couples. It only costs $5 per night per person. Their tiny homes, aka budget bungalows, are nestled in a village setting with shared common spaces and buildings. Supportive services are provided but the community is self-governed by its residents.
It began in 2013 as a pilot project on city-owned land and since has served over 100 people & counting. And now, many residents have transitioned to the permanent, affordable Emerald Village.
All by SquareOne Villages, a nonprofit that creates self-managed communities of cost-effective tiny homes for people in need of housing, from transitional and permanent, affordable #tinyhousevillages.

So glad to finally see this video. Here's hoping that people see and understand, economic refugees are not "bad" people, they have just been forced out of housing do the costs rising so much faster than incomes. Thank you for this very important and informative video. Oh and thanks for making me a star!

@Richard Quinones Yeah, right. It's the working class that would be paying hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to "manage" a place like this. It's the zoning boards and elite upper class, concentrated power and not very "white" that keep us from living inexpensively in our own homes.

@songbirdforjesus2381

@Richard Quinones I see rich Latin, Black and Asian elites all the time. Maybe this area has more white people I don't know I have never been there. America is as big as Europe. It is so vast you will find lots of Latin people here in North Carolina. In fact when I first moved here I was amazed at how well so many black people were doing. It's different wherever you go as far as demographics it seems that most of the people interviewed in that Village were white. It takes a lot to make it here in America is an expensive place to live. Most low-income immigrants don't realize this fact. Many families are moving in together. Even middle-income people. The cost of living in America is atrocious. In order to make it and do well you have to be able to speak English, have a skill and an ability to work for yourself or an education. Usually the husband and wife both have to work and work very hard to save money and have food on the table a vehicle to get back and forth to work health benefits although Social Services helps a lot of people even people who own their own homes for benefits for children Healthcare. It is a struggle but if you have a good attitude and have decent social skills you can make it here. Also understanding the culture and exactly what it takes 2 do well in America must be a challenge and is even for people born here.

Totally agree with you. They need to start building communities like this for anyone interested, as well as just smaller homes in general, i.e. 1,500 sq.ft or larger homes for hundreds of thousands of dollars, instead of smaller, more affordable homes. I am majorly downsizing and planning on moving; sadly have to rent and pray I can pay everything, then who knows, a small place of my very own.

Thank you, any time you can make where ever you are staying reflect your personality it becomes "home" and less like camping on the streets. I have gone the route of a tent in the woods 42 miles from town and no cell service to a tent on the side of the road where we were constantly being harrassed by the police to living in my car before I got into Opportunity Village. The relief, the removal of fear and knowing I wasn't going to spend the rest of my life on the street was so over whelming all I could was cry. It was not my life plan to work most of my adult life to retire and become unhoused because my ssb was $300 less than my rent. Who can live on only $749?

Bravo Eugene! So PROUD of all the WONDERFUL individuals supporting this vision to treat houseless individuals w/ DECENCY! As a former Oregonian, now living in another 'high homelessness' state, your efforts can be emulated everywhere! Seeing your Opportunity Village residents SMILES while living together harmoniously warms all hearts! Would suggest setting up a foundation to accept ideas, donations which could include labor like what Habitats for Humanity does. College students leaning about architecture & building could be woven in too. Betcha many would generously gift for this great cause to support their own community members! ♡♡♡

I love what they said about why should only rich people get to feel safe in a gated community. As a low income disabled human myself, I’ve been homeless a few times last year which was scary as all hell, I’m just lucky I had help and a place to rest my head safely. But I could easily have ended up permanently on the streets and never have a safe space to have my son. I’m now married and in a safe place with my three kids and wife. It’s crazy what two years of difference can bring.
