Thanks so much for this comparison. For years, I have used a GoPro 8, 9, and now 11 attached to the top of my Ikelite housing as a backup video camera. It allows me to get some video while also shooting photos with the larger housing. But I have always hated the noise and the fact that the stabilization breaks down in lower light. The Ace pro looks like it's doing pretty amazing. It's hard to tell from RU-vid, but it looks like the noise grain is smaller, its way more stable and there is quite a bit more detail when at depth. And I love the white balance!
@BrentDurand
@BrentDurand 5 месяцев назад
I hear you. And yes, the image stabilization holds up well, especially with HDR video where the GoPro processor just can’t keep up and we see jitters. Insta360 also doesn’t over-smooth the footage, which also creates loss of detail (except in PureVideo during daylight, but that’s designed for night use).

@@BrentDurandIf you look at your comparison around the 15:55 mark, GoPro is starts to lose detail in further out, and in some areas, blurs out, 17:46, GoPro completely loses dynamic range especially in the backdrop. Ace Pro's color and white balance adjustment is excellent, yes, there will be times where it will glitch due to light changes but it's almost instantaneous and confident that will get ironed out with future updates.
@BrentDurand
@BrentDurand 5 месяцев назад
@@MiyagisRant Those are both really nice insights. I also noticed a few strange moments with the color correction on the Ace Pro, once very visible shooting a wall of red corynactis with video lights where from one angle it was true red and at another angle the AI removed most of the red in center of the frame. Like you said, it will keep getting better. I noticed that both cameras may shift WB with panning and big changes in light (as they all do), but pros who can't use footage like that are probably shooting manual WB anyways.

Hey Brent, very nice informative video. In my opinion, the GoPro has still some advantages you haven't mentioned. You can buy a quality wide angle wet lens for GoPro, such as AOI UWL-03 or INON UFL G-140 SD. In addition, you can use the GoPro Labs with which you can create QR codes with various settings (Low light, fast action, Slow motion etc) and you can take these pictures on laminated sheets with you in your BCD pocket and can easily change the settings.
@BrentDurand
@BrentDurand 5 месяцев назад
Thanks! These are both really good points. I'll also add that you can use Backscatter's FLIP filter system on the GoPro. At some point I had to keep the video from dragging past the long length already, so focused on using the cameras without accessories. Maybe we need a Part 2 with these points you mention...!

@BrentDurand

Thanks! Yes, I used the Ace Pro with the dive housing so that I could go below 33ft / 10m. I would also recommend the housing for anyone doing a lot of diving. A few ocean swims without the housing is fine, but if you're not meticulous with maintenance you'll get debris in the microphone holes and and generally wear out the camera faster than keeping it like new inside the housing.

I did not use any filters - the footage is straight out of camera. I think the Ace Pro's AquaVision 2.0 color correction does an awesome job, and better with more color/light, so a filter might only be useful in really challenging conditions deeper where the colors don't exist.

@BrentDurand
@BrentDurand 5 месяцев назад
Thanks! I did not experience overheating but I also shoot one clip at a time (30-60s) and then search for the next clip. Overheating is usually never an issue with this style of shooting. I haven't dived the Ace Pro at night but did do some night surface tests using PureVideo mode in my full review video here (start at 4,34): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JUSP7oi5ypw.htmlsi=pMbGtkzOeCp0WgsQ&t=274 For shooting with UV light it really depends how bright your UV light is. The Ace Pro will do much better than the Hero12 as long as you can mask the lens port.

Great video. For the price point, which camera do you think gives the most bang for the buck? Did you use a red lens on your dive housings and where did you find the red lens for the Insta 360 waterproof housing? Thanks! I did not use filters on either camera for this test. All footage is straight out of camera. Backscatter's FLIP filter system for GoPro is great and not compatible with Insta360. That said, I prefer to shoot without filters, and with the color correction on the Ace Pro I would say that is the winner for ambient light diving in Cozumel. However, I must say that the best quality of the ACE (or other action cams) becomes useless if not supported by all those underwater videography accessories (such as better housings, wet lenses, filters and related adaptors) that the best brands produce only for GoPro. And I say this as the owner of a ONE RS for which, in anticipation of a trip to Raja Ampat, I can't even find the original underwater case because it is no longer in production. It annoys me to have to buy a gopro just for the lack of accessories.

not using 10 bit on the gopro was like we'll give this one to ace pro. you could at least try a bit more with the settings - native white balance, etc. anyway for it to be real comparison you have to color grade. have never seen such horrible footage out of my gopro. it really takes a knack to make it that bad.
@BrentDurand
@BrentDurand 4 месяца назад
I completely agree that 10-bit is a huge advantage for GoPro for those that want to color grade their footage. I didn't use it for this review since GoPro only recommends using 10-bit color if you plan to color grade and I wanted to keep this comparison as 'automatic' as possible, since that's how most folks use action cameras underwater. What we need now is a comparison using full manual settings and expert color correction to see what each camera is capable of producing in expert hands.

I think that at the end is all about who is behind the camera. Maybe the Ace is a bit better than GoPro, but at the end of the day, if you don’t know how to use and which accessories use to get better images/videos, both would get craps. If you know, doesn’t matter which one you have, you’ll have good results. Very important is also the editing skills. And if you starve for perfection, well, just buy a camera and a Marelux housing (example) if you can afford.

At 12:10, I disagree that the only reason you would use 10-bit video if you are going to post-process your video. It is true that 10-bit gives you more latitude to color grade the video, but that isn't the only benefit. 10-bit video is going to give you significantly better color transitions and gradient fills because of the increased colors (1 billion vs 16.7 million). As well, 10-bit color would help since you're enabling HDR. At first glance, you might not notice, but the difference is visible in most scenes. Maybe it is a coincidence or maybe it isn't, but the Insta360 Ace Pro doesn't support 10-bit color, only 8-bit. Perhaps that is leveling the playing field like increasing the bit-rate to better align with the Ace Pro, but that is a little different since you're leveling a capability of the GoPro to bring it up the same setting as the comparison vs downgrading a capability of the GoPro to match that of the Ace Pro. BTW - I own both cameras, so I don't have a dog in this fight.
@BrentDurand
@BrentDurand 5 месяцев назад
This is a really good point! Enabling 10-bit video will certainly deliver the benefits you outline. GoPro's materials on the Hero12 suggest only using 10-bit video if intending to post-process, which is why I left it off. The video is already 20 minutes while trying to keep things as simple as possible. To better address the benefit of shooting the GoPro in 10-bit to improve image quality, color, dynamic range, etc., I think a 'Part 2' video is needed shooting each camera at the best settings intended for editing and color grading. I don't pretend to be a pro at color grading though, and since the footage from each camera would require separate adjustments, we introduce the 'me' variable into the results. No real way around that though...

@@BrentDurand Let's differentiate between 10-bit and Log footage. You Log footage you definitely need to color grade and if that isn't really your wheelhouse, then a camera test wouldn't obviously be the time to dip your toes into those waters... However, 10-bit recording is available without recording in Log. 10-bit can be used with both the Standard and HDR color profiles and that would allow you to keep the "ME" factor out of the results - meaning you don't have to grade the footage at all. So, you must have 10-bit enabled to select the Log profile, but selecting the 10-bit profile doesn't require Log. It does make sense that Log isn't available with the 8-bit color depth because it really wouldn't provide the room to work with in post. Now, some of the results with 10-bit may not be super clear to see with RU-vid compression, but even then if you look closely you may notice modest improvements depending on the footage. On your monitor reviewing the original video the smoother color transitions and smoother gradients could be quite evident, again depending on the footage. Cheers!

@@brthiebauth Thank you for these details. I agree that more advanced shooters will want to use the GoPro at 10-bit even without intending to post-process. Like you said, it might be possible to see better color gradients, etc. on a home monitor. This falls into the category of recording more data just because why not - similar to color space for still photos - since SD card space really isn't an issue for most people anymore. Anyways, for this test I stuck to GoPro's recommendation to shoot 8-bit unless color grading. Backscatter also recommends shooting 8-bit unless color grading. Regardless, it would still be interesting to test two Hero12 blacks side by side with auto settings but one at 8-bit and one at 10-bit.

What? For underwater: DJI Osmo Action 4.

If I understand correctly, yes the OA4 can be used underwater! I'm working on a comparison of the Action 4 vs the Ace Pro for a video to publish in about 2 weeks. Stay tuned!

@@BrentDurand Well, yes, it is good for 18m but I didn't mean that specifically. I use mine with a waterproof case (good for 60m) The key point is the dedicate white balance sensor that keeps colours looking natural. Here's some footage I took a few weeks ago in Thailand ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-krhu25N9NeU.htmlsi=526NIBoD8lgQlrAN
