Hey guys! If you decided to go with the X4, check out my new X4 Beginner's Guide to help you get started: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eVGoTzr4W0k.html
I think this is a massive upgrade as the 8K really make a difference--people complaining about the sensor but do you really know how bulky it would be if you stuck 2 bigger sensors in the camera? X4 already gives the best output with physical restriction and I believe this is the best all-in-one action camera in the market you can get already
Cheers Jordan - you really hit the nail on the head! We're stoked with this one and really think it'll be a powerhouse with the 8K capability. Thanks again 🙌
Great comparison. I think they have made a mistake by not using a larger sensor as the bodies are bigger. This would have made the pixels larger, improving night time videos. Not sure the X4 is a worthwhile upgrade over the X3. X4 just a little bit too big.
@@bruceskousen5451 if you look at the Osmo pocket 3 with a 1 inch sensor, the gimbal size of that is not very large. 1 inch sensors are actually a lot smaller than 1 inch diagonal due to the very old standard they are measured in.
How’s the lenses? Any upgrades on them? Keep reading comments how bad they scratch..(x3) trying to figure out if I should get the x3 or new x4, mainly because of that
Of course the guy who got the camera for free from Insta360 long before it release (i.e a social media partner) is going to tell you its worth upgrading. Think I will wait 2 weeks before checking reviews so people who actually paid for it give a more unbiased opinion...
Yes, I got the camera early so I would have some time to test it out and show you this video. But all of these clips are straight from the camera without any color corrections. I was hoping that the comparisons would allow you to make your own decision. Once I placed the footage side-by-side, the differences became blaringly obvious to me. I only put all of this time and energy into cameras I fully believe you all will benefit from. I say no to creating videos of most the products that are offered to me (which are a lot).
I use my Insta360x3 for 9x16 reels on Instagram and Facebook. All my editing is on the mobile app. Considering the max rez upload is only1080 AFAIK, I think therefore I would have no benefit in upgrading??
I agree. The x4 definitely sharper, but not that much, not worth to upgrade, and it's larger. The x3 is already large compared my older Sony cams. Why I really hate Insta? I bought my x3 just 2 months ago. Everybody said that Insta releases their cameras in every autumn. No roadmaps like at Apple, Samsung. So,now I have a new x3 for the same price as the x4.
Honestly, The difference it not pushing me to get the x4. If you frame your shots in insta360 in your computer you will get higher quality than when you framing in your mobile app. I will consider this when they add a bigger sensor. I am sure this will be the next version. This is how these companies keep marketing for their products.
Can you explain why framing your shots in insta360 on pc gives you higher quality than framing shots on the insta360 mobile app? Its using the same shots, in the same resolution.
@@jdtravelninja It sounds weird, but I can confirm this. The stitching is way better in Insta360 Studio compared to the app; and imho the image quality is too, subjectively
@@camaira_birds-views Wow, thats weird. I always used the app since 2021 with the X2, and always loved how fast and easy edits could be made without needing a laptop. Then I would export the final files to my laptop and place them inside final cut to combine them with my drone footage and do the final edit (i do admit that sometimes the stitching or resolution wasn't exceptional, but i just blamed the small sensor). On the app I like to use the movement of my phone as the view point, making it super easy to do the edits. Wondering how good the user interface is on pc vs mobile app. I actually just ordered the X4 and after your comments, I may as well give the desktop app a go.
@@jdtravelninja I had exactly the same workflow, but I use Davinci Resolve instead of Final Cut. Give the Studio a try, I think the user experience is good and you don't have to transfer the reframed files to another device ;-)
Great review. On the X4 did they resolve the single Bluetooth connection limitation meaning can either connect the remote or an external audio/airpods?
How I saw from x4 reviews and owned the One RS. The RS still has more "real camera like" quality, not like x3 x4 looks like cheap phone footage. You can't deny the physics/ bigger sensor.
I have X3. If i broken my camera than i willbuy x4 . But otherwise i will wait X5. Or İnsta360 compony if say bring old camera back take new one half price ı can think about that too..
I'll buy this just because Im a gullible collector of GoPro and now Insta360 and I love the way my wife look at me everytime I buy another not needed gadget.
I'm currently testing both the x4 and the x3 I have to say when I film both at 5.7 in nice weather you can already notice a difference or when I film at 8k on the X4 Is this difference big enough to make an update? My personal opinion NO You can see more details with the The colors can be easily changed in the cutting program I think the x3 is a GREAT camera (the disadvantage of the X3 is that it takes longer to turn on and off and the battery doesn't last as long The disadvantage of the x 4 with the stick It seems heavier in the long run, which annoys me a bit I think the tone is the same for both But when I watch films on a nice day with the For example, when I film with the Pocket 3 and the Ace Pro in low light, there is a much greater difference. In the lowlight area whether X 3 or (X4 a little better) Both aren't that good But it is also clear that both of them are very nice weather cameras
Thank you for the feedback. It's nice to hear your experience. My experience was a bit different and I noticed a really dramatic difference between the image quality on the two cameras. But I really appreciate hearing other perspectives! Thank you.
How is the focal range for objects closer to the x4? I'm a painter, and often need to film my painting while I'm working outside; ideally the camera would be able to focus from a foot or so away, like my current Gopo9 is able to. And thank you for posting this awesome review!!!! Super helpful.
I have seen 10 reviews and they are all the same, they give direct support to buying the x4 when most of the best ones would be a nice software update and a little more battery. So, it's difficult for now to know a real review where the balance doesn't just ''TIP'' to whether you buy the x4 when most of the reviews are gift cameras. Let's wait a couple of months where normal humans buy and give their reviews ;) Still, thanks for the work for showing the videos of the 2 cameras, thank you!
How well does the horizon lock work on this camera? I used the x3 for mountain biking with it on my chest and everytime I did a switchback I had to make a few keypoints to keep it point forward where with the GoPro max I dont have that issue
I really liked your video Jordan. I am just starting back up my RU-vid channel. Point A Adventures shoots motorcycle footage, hiking, travel etc. But we also do product reviews. Do you consider the X4 a good camera for regular talking, product demonstration type videos? Thanks!
I just read x4 has maximim ISO of 60 while x3 has 3200. Is that accurate? And if so, does that not indicate the x4 us actually much worse for low light conditions?
Excellent comparisons! This is really helpful when trying to decide whether to upgrade my X3. Personally, I find the improvements in colour rendering and dynamic range to be more noticable than the resolution boost - though I only watched this on a laptop. Hmm. My wallet aches!
If you plug in the X4 to a portable power source when the battery is depleted, will it continue to record? That could be necessary on long motorcycle trips. Thanks
Great review, as always, but not worth the upgrade for existing X3 users. To me, it's a question of what currently works well, as opposed to drilling down on resolution specs, etc. that the average person doesn't notice on fast-paced action videos. What's really disturbing though is the X4's glass “Premium Lens Guard” option that's not backward compatible to the X3. As most X3 users can attest, the current X3 “Sticky Lens Guard” option is clumsy, expensive, and adversely affects image quality. Believe me, accidentally scratch a lens and you're in for lengthy, costly, repair and/or replacement process! Perhaps an X3 to X4 trade-in program would persuade current X3 users to “take the plunge”, but then too, there's all those accessories (e.g. dive case, batteries, charge hubs, et-al) that do not migrate to the X4. Albeit the Insta360 X3 and X4 are both amazing cameras, but for now, I’m sticking with my X3.
Great review and comparison by Jordan. Answered all the questions I could have possibly had. Guessing he had advance access to the camera seeing as how he's got a book out and a very comprehensive video on launch day! @delzane, thanks for your comments. Here's where I'm at... I just got my X3 last summer and already had to go through the repair process once due to a scratched lens. So naturally the thought of having easily removable and reusable lens guards is tugging at me to upgrade. Honestly should have been a part of the original design to begin with. The problem is I've also got 3 extra batteries, the 10 ft selfie pole and the GPS remote. Guessing the pole and remote would still work with the X4 but sucks that I can't still use the batteries. Agreed a trade in program would certainly ease the pain but from the company's perspective, I doubt we'd see something like that. Admittedly it's par for the course with electronics that there's always the shiny new model right around the corner so I guess I have to really think about how I use my X3 to see if it's worth upgrading. It's just those damn lens guards killing me. For context, I'm still using a GoPro Hero 4 knowing they are up to the 12 now, but the ancient GoPro still does what I need it to. It's rugged. Really frustrated about these lens guards!
Does the X4 have the same gap in recording after the 29 minute mark? I use this for recording my motorcycle rides and there is a large gap between the files that are recorded on the X3. Thanks for the video!
The X4 is way far from a Sony telephoto, but it also is able to create something completely unique to what a traditional camera can capture. Have fun with it!
Thanks for the video- reading from their website that the chip they use for X4 is much improved than the one for X3, which allows X4 to capture more pixels and details. I love how the image quality looks in your video, nice review.
For use as a dashcam and some fun videos for social media, I don't really see the need to upgrade from X3 to the X4. But good to see developments are being made, can't wait for what the next one will improve :)
360 cameras are super weird for vlogging. I would only use it as a b-roll camera to get a few interesting shots to blend into your normal camera footage in editing.
I don't know why no one is telling how bad is the image quality in the x3! I used ti have the original one x and I can't tell a differnce between them! Insta 360 should fix it and not give us a x4 with the same sensor and so much better quality as advertised! Also the single lens on the x3 looks also bad and desaturated! First time I am so dissapointed with a insta 360 product in terms of picture quality
I bought the X3 when it was like $50 off before Christmas. I didn't plan on using it till around now/spring and summer. Then the X4 get released and is much better and they wont do nothing about it... ugh... I did some tests on the 360 degree mode which I plan to take videos with on my motorcycle and they quality is horrible unless I run it through an AI editor after...
hi, thanks for your really great videos. I have a rather urgent question, i read that x4 has a mode that it can wake up and click a photo and go back to sleep/off. I would like to set it so that it keeps clicking photos every 1 minute or 5 minutes. Is that possible?
I just bought my x4-but in studio I can not get the video stable its weird -but its ok in the app? I then went back w my x3 and put a clip in the new studio ,that was fine..it's very frustrating ..any info would be great ! ty
The standard is plastic and the premium is tempered glass. For 2 premium guards it will cost you $70. I've seen a comparison and the plastic ones work really well but may not be as durable.
Yes the tempered glass on the Premium Lens Guards are going to give you more clarity. Any time you add more glass (or plastic) over a lens, it tends to have some impact on the quality. However, using either of the lens guards will add the extra nuisances such as extra glare and potential fogging. It's worth it though in situations where the lenses may get damaged.
I am still waiting for a Insta360 camera that can do both 360 and 180-3D video's (like the old EVO). Why oh why isn't Insta360 making a follow up for the EVO?? I love depth in my video's on my Quest 2 VR headset. Also, you cancel out the reframing part, while you still have enough room to look around in the 180 degree world.

18 seconds ago Does it still fuck up the date of recording when changing out depleted batteries? Have they fixed that or at least allow it to be changed EASILY after youve already taken it? Its 10 months behind and i cant find the menu option to reset to todays date in the menus. Youd thunk for toys such expensive , the Chinese would think of this even if its a tranlate before idea in broken Chinese person.
I'm just looking for a camera to use while on my bike for safety, a sort of dash-cam style use only, you know, to have myself covered and everything recorded. Is a 360 cam even something I should be looking for for this use? It is an electric bike, so I should be able to record throughout my entire time riding right? But maybe a simple wide angle (fishbowl) style cam is all I really need. Please let me know camera and safety experts
Why don't they make a proper 360 action cam, in extreme sports the bigger screen, or any screens at all is disadvantage. I wish they'll make a 360 GoPro mini like cam, small, compact, light weight and durable... The x2,3,4 are just a vlogers cam.
This is why I dont get everyone camera. I still ise my X2. So to me.... This is a HUGE upgrade. Lens covers. Better battery. Way bigger sensor. Toe this is a must by with how much I wtill ise my x2. Plus my current X2 os javing trouble staying connected to my app.
Great review (like the fourth I'm watching now). The X4 really seems to be a great image quality update real 4K was always missing with 360 vids, especially the higher frame rates are a game change for action sports (which most of us use it for I gues?). It just seems like the overall most rounded 360° action cam right now, given that the other cams and X2 and X3 have more compromises. Guess it is reaaally time to replace my trusty Osmo Action 4 for daily shoots and get this bad boy, you convinced me :D
Gesture control is definitely a must-have since I often shoot while riding on my motorcycle, coz without it I'll have to shell out for a remote and that thing ain't cheap.
Having had to send my x3 back after failing 19 seconds under 2 foot of water with salt water in the battery compartment I’m waiting to see if they replace . If they don’t then I won’t be upgrading I’ll be ditching the x3 and not buying insta again . The camera was correctly sealed and locked , checked and double checked . If they do replace or repair I’d be tempted to upgrade even though the x3 was only a month old
@@bruceskousen5451 I disagree if it’s advertised as waterproof to 10 metres then that’s what it should do . A friend has one and he uses it to that depth regularly with no issues . I had a duff one
I would reach out to them and explain the situation. If it was properly sealed, it's advertised to be waterproof to 33' deep. It probably just depends on how it has to be proven. I hope they take care of it for you!
Does the X4 drop 12 seconds of video too when it splits the file for a long recording? I did not know this about the X3 and for my purposes, it is super annoying that after 29 minutes of recording, a new file is being created on the SD card and it could happen right when I wanted to capture something important.
I am trying to make up my mind about which camera to buy. I never had a 360 camera before and all the review videos I watched make me want to get one. One question I have is, are these cameras gods for underwater videos? Even in this video Jordan said they aren’t so good underwater but dive cases are available. What does that mean? Does dive case somehow improve the clarity? What does a dive case even do? Isn’t the camera already waterproof without the dive case? Thank you already for your answers.
Good Vid Jordon! 3 questions. 1. For remote, hands free, extended duration operation, is it possible to consume power from an extended duration, externally attached battery WITHOUT having to remove the internal bat? 2. Is there any way to consume all of the power from both the internal battery AND the external extended battery without ANY operator intervention? 3. Is battery usage one at a time only...either the external or the internal until dead but no dual usage or automatic switching?
So you don't need dive case to go surfing with the X3/X4? How's the audio after the surf gets over the camera? Do you need to blow it off or its clean after a duck dive?
aww damn the larger battery means third party X3 battery charging boxes wont fit the X4 battery. guess early adopters only have the basic charging base.
Yes, that is a huge deal. Sorry. But I do expect that they will add this capability through a firmware update soon. There is no reason the X4 shouldn't be able to live stream.
Thank you for the excellent, informative video, highly appreciated. I've got a few questions about Insta X4 (or Insta in general), related to my long car drive recordings. 1. Does it work long time when plugged to a charger? With a GoPro I can record many hours without swapping the battery. 2. Does it have a time warp mode (like a GoPro, time lapse with stabilization and horizon levelling - for dynamic scenes, long drives for example)? 3. Can it be controlled from a mobile phone, thru an app?
Great review, I see you're wearing glasses, they look polarized to me. Can you tell me if the touch screen is visible when using them? I ask because in the insta360ace/ace pro it isn't. Thank you so much and what a fantastic location and colors! Thanks and greetings from Italy.
For me, it's similar to the Ace Pro in that I can functionally use it but the polarization causes some strange lighting effects on the screen. It probably depends on the glasses. Mine are not the best 😉
It's all about what we choose to film. Yes, I wanted to show you guys what the footage looks like when filming a person, but my real passion is capturing the beauty of nature. This camera works amazingly well for that too besides all the glamour shots. Haha.
The major think that has not been addressed is a secondary attachment point. If mounted on a moving vehicle for example, the screw in 1/4" 20 TPI attachment is not secure. A secondary attachment point would keep the unit safe if it becomes unscrewed.
Hi, I use it in Hawaii all the time. In 8k, you may experience some heating issues, but overall, you will be able to capture some amazing g footage, even in a warm climate. 👍
