i think they were trying to do something like RU-vid Kids. But they forgot that RU-vid Kids is basically a consuming only app. The kids watch content created by channels, specifically created towards youngsters. IG is not like that. Instagram focuses on photos, shared by users. It's not an one way app. Its fueled by users content (and kids as young as 10 shouldn't be put into this egocentric bubble)

I have 2 things to contribute: The American Girl website was just for kids and it has all sorts of transparency and parental controls and they still had to shut it down because of the insane amount of predators. Instagram was the first social media I deleted due to how it made my already debilitating body image issues even worse.

I disagree with kids having a smartphones in general. I remember my parents giving me a simple flip phone in 2012. Telling me to call them when I got home from school or during emergencies.

I would argue a 10 to 12 year old DOESNT NEED AN INSTAGRAM! Thats to fucking young to be on social media to begin with.

As someone who has been exploited and SA'd by older men when I was a young girl, as well as someone who has an ED, I'm grateful that you brought this up, as well as the issue of how instagram relates to body image. And how it makes it easier to sell things to insecure, depressed people. I had instagram when I was 11 (I'm 20 now) and I think that may have had something to do with my mental health.

I really wish that any kids platforms didn’t exist. Kids should not be getting used to being on social media as early as they can. This is literally adding to the issue. Predators, cyberbullying, etc… (Even stupid Roblox where there should be no way that kids can contact each other on it, it should just be the games.)

TL;DR The Congressman's question is ethically reasonable and pro child safety but is pointless because it's an unavoidable symptom of how Instagram works. The congressman actually made perfect sense. He is saying that users having two active accounts boosts the numbers that they show to the investors. The incentive for a teenager to make a finsta obviously isn't exclusively to avoid their parents but for the sake of this argument it's relatively close to the truth. The congressman is effectively pointing out the conflict of interest between Instagram artificially inflating it's numbers by 'allowing' users to make secret secondary accounts that exist for the sole purpose of avoiding parental oversight. That being said, the reason the entire argument is pointless is because it would be nearly impossible from a technical perspective to 'ban' or even prevent finstas. People have second accounts for all sorts of purposes, some people have one meme account and one personal account.

They will verify age then track this info until they are old enough to see switch to a adult Insta account then push adds

My main problem with instagram kids is now you’re giving a direct path for predators and groomers online to find these children and teens… and taking cyber bullying to a new level. Why not develop parental controls further on the main app. Maybe link a parent account to their child’s in a safe manner, give the parents more control and awareness instead of marketing children and making them vulnerable to the world

You can easily make sure only children are on the site. Just make people enter in their date of birth when they sign up. And if they’re too old, the site won’t let them on. The predators won’t stand a CHANCE.

Senator Blumenthol (aka Finsta guy), while somewhat ignorant to the application of Finsta as a concept not a product, has good intentions and has done quite a bit of work in regards to protecting children - he’s also spearheading the investigation of the FBI/UGA’s failure to protect young athletes from SA (by Larry Nasser and others). Unfortunately a majority of these senators are just OLD. Intentions are great but the lack of knowledge or accountability to understand technology (which is a crucial understanding not just for this specific case, but to be a senator in general) is what’s keeping us at a standstill with big tech

Why is everyone so outraged? It's a safer option geared towards kids who's parents likely already allow them to have a full Instagram account because there is no alternative. I don't feel like the main reason is to attract more children from signing up, it's simply to give a version that has parental controls enabled on it.
