The problem I have with Shane is that he constantly plays off of his low self esteem as an excuse for the bad things he's done/doing. He is a terrible manipulator, and he gaslights his "friends" a lot. He's emotionally manipulative and toxic, while playing off that he's a "nice" guy.

The scariest thing about the scar clip is how long he leave that fridge open for.

I wish they had a person of colour on this program so they can understand how it feels or how it felt to watch that growing up and have to laugh because everybody else was laughing. I remember feeling weird about Shane’s content and everyone in the comments thinking it was hilarious. Shane is definitely a lot worse.

The thing about Shane is that he has the talent to manipulate his audience into feeling bad for him. He can manipulate the situation and make himself the victim and say that he has grown as a person. Here’s the thing about Shane; his sincerity only goes so far. I’m gonna use his Shanaynay character for example. This character from 2008 is obviously a stereotypical caricature of a black “ghetto” woman. He received backlash for the character and using blackface, but he initially doubled-down that it was harmless “shock-jock comedy.” When the backlash kept coming, he stopped doing blackface, but kept doing the character. When he was called out for it again, he stopped doing the character, “apologized”, yet kept quietly selling Shanaynay merch. After that apology, the backlash died down, merch with the character appears in a video in 2018. And with this last round of backlash, people noticed that he was still selling Shanaynay merch as recently as 2019. The problem isn’t that he keeps getting cancelled and recancelled for the same things over and over like he claims; the problem is he has to be pushed and reminded over and over or he will just continue the same behavior, just at different levels.

You have a huge platform and when addressing issues that impact minors, be a little bit more professional. Ethan was not this involved in people’s drama until Trisha came into the picture and now that she has left, he is really keeping up with shading people. Eye rolling and snickering comes off as juvenile. As someone who survived assault as a child, it became a trigger for me. I know it’s s podcast so it’s laid back but there has to be a certain level of composure when addressing grave issues. AB was smart to stay out of it.

12:49 Here's the thing, the content that Shane provided at that certain time may have been because he understood that controversial meant traction and inadvertently subconsciously made that younger audience then feel like it was okay to act on those things in real life because they laughed at it on youtube and that's the bigger issue. I don't believe the intention was to be hurtful but rather trying to come out of a dark place through laughter which seemed then better than the alternative. Again the media Shane's generation was exposed to was that of those big and powerful hungry predators that we still talk about today wether it be cable or movies so I could even suggest that his content was a reflection of him as an audience perspective. The reason why Shane has had such loyal following for so long is because of how vulnerable and sensitive he has been at times and today it still resonates looking at the latest response.

Not saying that it’s good or bad, but it’s really interesting to watch these situations unfold where Ethan and Hila are friendly with someone (for example Shane or Trisha) and then due to something unfolding they just completely switch up on them. I mean I’m sure they have their reasons for doing so, I just think it’s interesting to see how things unfold over time.

i see no correlation between amount of time taken off after being canceled. To how responsible or irresponsible someone is handling it. Everyone is going to react to being canceled differently. I disagree with the notion that it is some how more responsible to take more time off of producing content. The real concern is the behavior, and lack of willingness to change.

I find it so funny how everyone who's willing to overlook Shane's past literally cannot respond when someone pulls out the fact that he has touched children, especially little girls multiple times in the past. I feel like there are so many aspects to this cancellation thing... for me the hard part is how I like some people and feel way more understanding towards them than others...Trisha for my taste could be cancelled away from the internet for good... also I think it wouldn't matter to me if they cancelled Ryland... I think sympathy IS a factor, and since many people just don't like Shane, they feel no conflict about shitting on his content and his past. And as much as I celebrate people being held accountable and Harvey Weinstein being in jail and people being able to speak up finally (and being heard!) I think that these cancellations are so unforgiving and are not taking into account that we are all products of society. You can judge me as much as you judge him but my brothers and I talked hardcore stuff when we were teenagers. We were clueless and loved crossing boundaries and thought everything was funny. We didn't reflect on political correctness, colonialism, racism, sexism etc as much as we do now, especially since the internet opens a space for that discussion that was not there for us when we were kids. So being a troubled kid myself I kinda feel how Shane has a sense for darkness and selfhatred and that all his "jokes" came from a place of making fun of yourself, crossing your own and others boundaries, having a bad relationship to your body and your sexuality and so on... Thats where his "humor" came from. Ethan is the worst part of these videos. Maybe it's the editing, but he can't continue one line of thought for more than 30 seconds. If he plays a video, he interrupts it about every 10 seconds to say something totally inane and unnecessary.

I watched Shane’s video. I too was very conflicted bc for a long time I was a massive massive fan. I watched everything of his from 2014 to 2020. I admit I laughed a lot in his recent video. I felt how I felt when I use to watch him before. In a way it was good to see Shane again. But I’m still so conflicted about what he did in his younger RU-vid area. When it all came out I was incredibly disappointed by his actions and even more disappointed by his apology video. I unsubscribed last year and didn’t think twice about him. It hurt my heart a lot. But I couldn’t just get over it. Of course, just like Olivia said on here, it’s not for me to accept his apology on everyone and move forward. I get completely where everyone was and is coming from with Shane bc all of his old content is incredibly offensive and bad. Nothing should ever excuse his behaviours, he was old enough to know better about it all. But when I watched this new video, I somehow felt like what he was saying - even if he was all jumbled up - was the truth. He had time to reflect on what needed to be focused on and changed, and he did that. In a way I want to give him another chance. But also in another way, I don’t. I loved Shane for years, but now idk how to feel. I wish he would’ve talked about it more in his video, but at the same time I liked how he spoke on it a bit and then moved on. I’m just very conflicted but time will tell.
