Today I wanted to merge my knowledge of photography and digital manipulation with my life as an influencer and show you just how easy it is for us influencers to cheat our way to perfect skin and perfect proportions. With over use of factetune and awful instagram edits, and photoshop fails, today I share how and why its done and what tools and programmes influencers use to lie their way to perfect skin and proportions.
You may not know but my education and my degree is actually in Editorial and Advertising photography, where, amongst other stuff, we learnt a lot about digital retouching, especially when it comes to the beauty and fashion industry. So I have a keen eye for…..lies in photographs and more recently video.
And whilst the purpose of this video and potential series isn’t to name and shame or call people out, I do feel as influencers, we have a responsibility to be 100% honest when it comes to products we are promoting or a lifestyle we are promoting. Especially when we are trying to show the results of a product. But some people just lie there way to a pay day…So…i’ll be honest for these people :)

Do love the video, I feel like not enough ppl are aware of how edited photos and video are. I had a girlfriend who was sad about her attempt to replicate an eye look that she found on IG. I messaged her and told her that most of what she was looking at was photo shop. It's sad to me that this is where we are, but I guess 🤷‍♀️

Make sure you show this video to your sister. though, it's possible she won't believe it... unless you manage to show her footage of the celebrities on the red carpet and then in professional pictures... and ask her what happened there.. After being shamed, she points out an ad of her dress, featuring the same model. "Look at that. Do you think anyone looks like that?" The model snorts and agrees. "Yeah even I don't look like that."

R P Girl, you are NOT alone. I stopped using social media 4 years ago and everyone thought I was being dramatic, but seeing everyone look amazing or live these amazing lives made me feel like crap about myself and my own life (I’m already a super self conscious as it is). Now it’s a relatively popular thing where most of us feel absolutely crappy about ourselves because the people we see on social media. The thing is we can’t believe the stuff we see on the internet. It’s very obvious these days that most of it is a lie. Even our favorite RU-vidrs do it. So we just have to remind ourselves that its not real. It’s hard, believe me. I don’t touch social media to this day but I try to check Twitter and IG sometimes. Also, you’re female. Believe it or not, we all have breakouts. It happens. Sometimes worse than others. So you’re not alone. I, myself deal with hormonal breakouts as well. I have good luck with birth control helping it, and a good skincare regime (thank goodness for The Ordinary products, they’ve changed my skin). Currently I’m not on the pill and trying to rely solely on skincare products to keep my skin “clear”. Again, you’re not alone. From your thumbnail, I can see you are GORGEOUS! You look like one of those lucky ladies that doesn’t even need makeup. Remember, we only have one life so stressing over things we can’t really control is just going to make your life seem subpar. Seriously, you are stunning. Stop comparing yourself to others. Hold your head high, pretty lady.

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one, I didn’t think I was but painful acne isn’t exactly something most people want to talk about XP it’s life though! Yep love the ordinary as well, I just started tret and spironolactone so fingers crossed I see some lasting results!
@merrilax1
@merrilax1 4 года назад
R P - hey girl! I have a lot of friends who had really good luck with Spironolactone. I would’ve gone on it myself if I hadn’t gotten pregnant (best skin of my life for real). Before pregnancy though, I got crazy hormonal acne all along my jaw. Started when I hit my early 30s and was this horrible red-purple color that I knew would scar if it went on long enough. Seeing pics of these influencers didn’t help at all - as someone said elsewhere, it’s like I didn’t know what skin was supposed to look like anymore. Wishing you lots of luck! I also had pretty good results with a couple of treatments, including microdermabrasion.

I understand how you feel. I have been struggling with really bad acne that has just gotten worse in a way as I have gotten older. I am 19 now, but now I get darker under eyes and such. I sat her down and had her watch these with me and some of these edits on all of the videos she was so surprised! I just want to state that i'm not here trying to expose or shame anyone for using filters. I use filters, they are fun to use and as a photography graduate, I see pictures as a form of art, wether it be a selfie taken on a phone or a high budget beauty campaign. But I do feel, if you are promoting a brand or product, filters shouldn't be used in order to promote the products benefits. I feel the same about this in not only the influencer space, but also on TV advertising, magazine adverts etc etc And this video is purely to make everyone aware that whilst beautifully imagery can be and should be appreciated, we should know that everything we see isn't always 100% the truth.

I don't really use social media that often so when I went on instagram in summer and saw all the beautiful girls on there I wanted to delete my photo from my phone. I lost almost 20 kg in a year before the picture, so I was much slimmer than before. Also in the picture my butt and my stomach looked way better than it usually does and my skin looked great. What did I focus on? Stuff like my "huge" ribcage, my wierd shoulders, my red knees, my "old looking" neck (I was 19 at the time). Social media influencers can sometimes really turn your occasional self love into being disgusted by your totally normal and even pretty body. That's not what they should be doing.

my sister poses in ALL photos. Major poses. We went on a cruise and when you get off the ship they take a picture of you and later then have them displayed for you to purchase. When we went to look at the pictures she said 'who is that with you?' I said 'that's you!! who else would be in the picture with me?' She was flabbergasted and kept saying 'that's not me'....she's so used to seeing herself posed that a natural caught in the moment shot she didn't recognize herself.

Ok, I’m actually a bit ticked off about this. Granted, I’m older and somewhat social media challenged, but I did not know about all these filters, especially the real time ones. I knew about lighting and that a lot of beauty gurus use lighting to enhance their skin tone, but I did not know that they could actually get rid of spots and blemishes and completely change their face contours. It makes me angry when I think about all the young girls (and boys) that feel inferior or second best, and maybe even hopeless, because no matter how much time or money they spend, they can’t look like their favorite RU-vidrs/Instagramers. Shameful. And socially irresponsible. And just wrong.

Buy their shit today! This shake will instantly burn all extra calories without any workout, this makeup will erase all wrinkles. Need proof? One moment, need to adjust some filter settings! Lol, I don’t use smartphones, but one time my bff wanted to take some photos together a few years back. Normally, I’m not a big picture taker, but I was like, whatever, never taken a photo with a selfie camera before, so why not. I was INSTANTLY suspicious and like... “why TF do I look so good?!” 🤨 Like something is wrong here, I have no instinct to cringe at these photos! 😂 I finally asked and she told me about the beauty mode thing. Honestly, it was a huge sigh of relief. Not being keen to smartphones, I had no idea about how freaking easy photoshopping pics and videos had become with all these filters and apps and such. I only noticed that women in particular had become MUCH terrier online - including people I knew in real life - and it made me feel like total crap about myself. I thought at the very least I must be whatever the exact opposite of photogenic was compared to every other girl on the planet 😂 Now that I know these things exist and are readily available to the average person, it’s better. However, it doesn’t make as big of an impact as I would have thought - I can know something is almost certainly edited, but I don’t know in what ways or how much. The image therefore still has a bigger psychological impact than simply vaguely knowing some sort of editing has been done. Really wish this stuff didn’t exist! Seems far more harmful than beneficial to all involved (aside from those developing and selling the apps)

As a former model (in the early 80s), even without the technology we have today it took hours of shooting, the best lighting, an amazing photographer who had studied angles and a fabulous makeup and hair team just to get one or two pictures that were considered useful. It was and is all about selling a dream to sell a product! My advice is to study ingredients and how they work on your skin and get to know your skin type very well! Always remember that true beauty comes from an infectious smile, kindness to others and a positive outlook on life! The sad part is people are now having to celebrate when someone is being “real,” by not filtering themselves since it’s such commonplace. They actually look better without all of the filters and crap, but you’ll never be able to convince them.

This was really interesting to watch. I've seen reality stars in magazines who alter pictures of themselves so much on their social media that they begin to believe that they actually look like that, then when paparazzi take a photo they claim the photographer deliberately made them look bad or altered the photo. They have somehow lost touch with how they really look. As someone who had anorexia for a decade when I was young it seems like a really slippery slope to get on as it's clearly causing body dysmorphia in vulnerable people. So knowing how I used to be it is something I have avoided learning how to do!

My experience of Instagram changed completely when I got a tablet and stated seeing some of these pictures on a big HD screen. Sometimes it was just things like "oh that makeup actually looks pretty cakey"... but you can definately see the blur of backgrounds and clothing so much more when people start altering their bodies.

I gained weight when I lived with my grandma for a while. Afterwards I struggled for some time to lose the weight exercising and trying different diets. One day I just decided to heck with and stopped stressing about my weight. Then people started telling me that I looked thinner. Turns out, I naturally lost some weight when I stopped obsessing over it and just lived my life. I'm not back to where I was, but I've learned to be happy where I am. Who knows? I might just get there some day, but if I don't it's ok too.

It actually has a name! It’s called “body dysmorphia” - when you think you’re too fat or too thin, but in reality you’re perfectly fine. Not to alarm you but that’s what anorexics and bulemics have. (That doesn’t mean you’re either of those. I think we all have a touch of it).

Just want to say, love this video. As someone who studied photography, I forget that other people can't see the 'what seems obvious to me' edits on influencer's photos and it's so important for people to understand this. And your point that what is found attractive on social media changes so often is so true, and has been so true throughout time. As someone with a big dutch nose and a little white girl mouth, I'm praying for the day that it's found "attractive" 😅 I found your videos on facebook the other day and had to subscribe here as I agree with pretty much everything you say 💕

I would love for this to be a series 💖 I think most of us come here for the truth of skin care. We love seeing the curtain taken back, not because we want to trash people or anything like that, just because we like to see what is what. Our expectations change because of what we look at social media and it’s important to see that more often than not it’s just smoke and mirrors. Thank you 💕

I'm glad someone is outing this sort of thing in such detail. I love a beautiful photo just as much the next person, but it just gives people such unrealistic expectations to compare themselves against. It really damages people who have a difficult time with self-esteem and self worth, even when they KNOW how much retouching and editing is done. It is still difficult to imagine until you actually see how easy it is, and I work with Photoshop on a daily basis.

This is so needed. Thank you. We kind of all know beauty gurus, influencers and pretty much everything you see on a screen is retouch at some point, but most of us cant help feeling insecure or frustrated when you see you're not the same as what you see on your phone, whether its your make up, your skin, your body. It happens to me a lot, always be shown some kind of impossible beauty standard EVEN THE INFLUENCER doesnt have!!!. We need more videos and posts like this to come back to earth a little.

@@kimmyball4961 Hi Kim! Thank you so much, you're really kind. Now I see that my comment may had sound a little dramatic lol but Im 25 and honestly didnt get the worst part of it. I think everybody struggles with self steem at some level, especially women, at all ages, and thank god I have educated myself (and still am) so I can let go all that bs. But I think about the ones who are living right now their teens and how hard it can be with society like this. Im for sure can be insecure with some things but even if youre not you can find yourself questioning yourself and others because of all this beauty standards that go beyond social media. Thats why I think content like this is so needed.
