I feel like society has created this expectation of women (and some men too!), that we are supposed to look flawless 24/7. We’re not allowed to have pimples, dark circles, wrinkles or texture. And if we do we should hide it with makeup. But then we also shouldn't wear too much makeup! And if we look like real human being with imperfections? Well then we’re just not good enough. That’s what the magazines and social media would have you believe anyway. We have instagram influencers and famous people posting fake ‘no makeup’ selfies, in flattering lighting, probably with makeup on anyway, and then the selfie is edited too. It’s not wonder we can develop a complex when we compare what we see in the mirror to what we see online.
If you feel like you only look beautiful with your makeup on then I have one thing to tell you. Your face is your face, whether you have makeup on or not. Therefore if you feel like you look good with it on, then you look good with it off too. Yes i’m going to look different if i have an entire face of glam makeup on - but its still my face. Makeup is not plastic surgery. If you feel good with your makeup on, then feel good without it too, because you’re beautiful.
I’m not ugly without makeup, and you're not ugly without makeup. But do you know what is ugly? Our society and the ridiculous unrealistic expectations it puts on us.

Ugh I hate when people say “you’re so brave” because of no make up or shaved hair. I feel like it’s so back handed.. it’s like they’re going out of the way to point out that I’m different in a bad way in their opinion. Like.. why can’t they ever say “your so pretty” or “I like this particular thing about you” as a direct compliment..

It’s because they literally are brave for that. When Rihanna did it, she opened herself up to some horrible, degrading comments. Knowing the internet is the way it is and being that public and having the thick skin to deal with that is hella brave in my opinion. Whether it should be brave or not - that’s another story. It shouldn’t be brave because you shouldn’t have to deal with people like that and we should all just be kind. But society is society so I think it’s still brave to a degree even if you’re stunning without makeup. One person insults me and it ruins my whole day. I can’t imagine having that amplified the way celebrities do.

Highly agree with the comment above, i reckon the people who say have that insecurities themselves and know full well how cutting the comments & insults about your looks can be. It sucks we’ve crossed the line that women showing bare unfiltered faces or unshaved bodies get called ‘brave’ but honestly it does need some courage to do that. I’d be hella terrified to show myself flaws and all out there and have every detail be scrutinised by millions of people.

Read something very true the other day: You know why men don't feel ugly without makeup? Because they were never told that they looked ugly without it. It still is a brutal reality that women grow up thinking looking good is the justification for their existence. As if they need one.

YES. 100%. This is why I think it's actually really sneakily harmful when people talk about needing makeup or not. When we say things like, "You're so pretty, you don't need makeup." I think over time it builds insecurity in all of us, because everyone has less attractive days. I say 'we' because I've unfortunately had this mindset at times where I need makeup more certain days. Or that if I had better skin I wouldn't "need" foundation.

Yes! And not to mention a lot of people saying how much they love guys with like messy hair or just in sweatpants or whatever casual clothing. There’s nothing wrong with liking the way people look in casual clothes, but girls are usually expected to dress nice and wear makeup everyday to look “good” while guys can walk out of the house without brushing their hair and wearing whatever they found on the floor first that morning, and no one says a thing. No one expects guys to dress nicely. In fact, I saw some guys come in at work and I thought it was odd that they were dressed nicely. Guys don’t even have to try with their appearance to be acceptable to the public and some of them have the audacity to criticize girls for not putting in that 110% everyday.

men have usually pretty ugly faces. because - let's call them "society standards of beauty" - don't expect men to have a pretty face, they just focus on their body and on their masculine parts. instead, beauty standars for women focus on their body, yes, but on their face mostly. if we applied the same standards we have with women to men, we'd figure out that most of the male actors, models, etc that everyone praises are ugly.

I transitioned to my natural hair starting at 55...gave up the mascara and liner (only makeup I ever wore) a couple of years later. I've never felt so free and prettier than being in my own skin...just turned 62 yesterday and grateful to truly embrace the real me (and like what I see!).

I quit wearing makeup when it quit working. Lol You cannot cover up age spots. You cannot wear lipstick when it bleeds off your lips via tiny wrinkles. You can't wear mascara on thinned, short lashes. You can't wear eyeshadow on covered lids. 😂

Also, in another comment, someone was talking how they were obsessed with make-up, but at some point just tried stopping and instead use skincare products, and after a while, they now are truly better looking, naturally. After some time, they tried make-up again, but they don't like it anymore, and find it gross thinking about their pores blocked by that stuff.

I just wanna say this: I’m a professional make up artist, I’ve worked on photo shoots and trust me, when they say “no makeup” on the cover of a magazine, it means that there’s makeup that average people can’t see (and also a lot of editing). If you see a professional picture that says “no makeup” but the model looks perfect, they’re lying!

I used to enjoy Photoshop a lot as a teenager. It was kind of a hobby for me to choose random pictures from the internet and turn them into “beautiful”. That was also when I learned that whenever you see a closeup of a face, they airbrush the entire skin and then put fake pores on it with a photoshop brush, so it looks natural but flawless.

Honey, she's wearing makeup. At the very least, she is wearing lipstick. Lighting and camera angles can also make you appear more flattering. I'm not trying to take her down. I agree with everything she said in the video... I just want people to be aware that it's not just celebrities. It's all media we see online, on tv, in photos, etc. Make up, filters, lighting, camera angles, after effect/editing. All of these things can change the way a person looks from how they would irl and bare-faced.

A few years back I got into Korean skincare so that my skin would be in good condition and I'd feel more confident without makeup on. It's done wonders for my skin and I can't remember the last time I wore makeup (must be at least a year now). Rihanna and Alicia Keys show up makeup free regularly and they look gorgeous. Yesss sometimes our skin can go through rough times, but we can find skincare routines that can be game changing. Some have more cooperative skin and others struggle more due to many different factors such as hormones or allergies. You are right no one is absolutely perfect; We all have to work hard to look our most comfortable. But no one is necessarily ugly without makeup, thats just a social ideology. If we work on healthy skincare, I guarantee you’ll find yourself wearing makeup less often or become more comfortable in your own skin.

Stephanie keeps saying that ”we all look beautiful without makeup”, which I understand comes from a loving, caring and kind place. However, we must remember that WE DO NOT OWE IT TO ANYONE to look beautiful. We have NO OBLIGATION to look beautiful, with or without makeup. We look how we look and, just as Stephanie points out, we are worthy. Why we feel as we have to be beautiful can be discussed in eternity, but we have to remember that we don’t have to. We might want to, for ourselves, but we owe it to no one.

In addition to your makeup tutorials for mature skin (which is so nice to see!), I would LOVE to see you talk about greying hair. I'm in my mid-thirties, and my black hair has been going gray since around age 20. I've had a whole journey from vehemently trying to hide it to letting the gray show completely. I'm really proud and relieved that I found the courage to escape the hair-dyeing cycle that has entrapped so many generations of women as they age.

The biggest problem is the fact that she’s lied saying she hasn’t had plastic surgery, when she bought a whole new face and body. When I was in the military I saw men that trashed their wives for “letting themselves go” and these men were the fat balding guys who couldn’t pass fitness tests. I laughed at them. Their imperfections never occurred to them but their wives baby weight or not wanting to wear makeup were obvious to them

It's stops after a while. They just have to get used to it. Happened to me with glasses. Everyone thought I looked weird and ugly without my glasses when I got contacts, then when I switched to glasses they said I look weird and ugly with glasses and I should go back to contacts. When someone isn't used to seeing you in a certain way it looks weird at first. people should just keep their mouths shut though.

I only wear make up once or twice a year (for wedding or other special occasions) so I'm and others are used to seeing me whiteout make up and I often feel beautiful enough. (sure I have pimples and dark circles under my eyes that I don't like but if there are not so recognizable or I just don't pay attention to them). My family, friends and partner tell me often enough that I'm beautiful when I wear make up which is like I said not often, and when I doesn't. So I don't feel the need to waer make up because I'm pretty enough for them and me. (believe me I'm far away from modern beauty standards)😂 Sorry for my bad English 😅

I feel like there was an air of her looking down on anyone who wouldn’t also do it, or you know ignoring the ways in which she was privileged to feel comfortable enough to do that I remember she suffered with acne in the past and is very happy to go makeup free now that it’s gone. which is great for her but the way in which she seemed to push the agenda while her skin is now lovely fresh and even toned, it’s not as ‘brave’ as it seemed like it was being portrayed

I interpret it the same way, the difference being: I don't care what they think. If someone makes that comment to you, chances are they're trying to be hurtful. If they're trying to hurt you, they're not really your friends, and if they're not even your friends, why do you care what they think? If they're just being mean, then you probably don't even look bad at all, they're just taking a jab at your insecurities. Aaaand, if they're simply oblivious to how hurtful they are, then just forgive them for it, they don't intend to hurt you. Besides, if you ever need to fake sickness for a day off, just show up to work without make up! points you, lol. I say all of this in good fun, btw, not trying to belittle your feelings; it's the reasoning I go through to not let things get to me, is all :)

I feel you girl 100%, I'll never forget in High School once I didn't wear makeup one day, I had really heavy dark circles in those days under my eyes, and my guy friend asked me if I had been punched in the face? I stopped wearing makeup when I couldn’t stand to see myself without it. I’m so much happier with my natural face now that I only wear makeup on special occasions. I don’t know why people are so shocked to see women without their faces caked in makeup. Do they think women naturally have a smoky eye, winged liner, and cherry red lips?? As a man I always find a woman with minimal till no make up (natural look) the most cute. Perhaps its bc i find it easier to connect bc they dont hide themselves and it communicates she isnt insecure and obsessed with "having to look pretty" which would be a huge dealbreaker. Furthermore, crazy enough if i see a womam full of make up it even blocks me more to fully express myself as i putting her in a box of; "shes prob full of herself." I have dated many women and the women without much make up were the real deal :). So please. Women. Dont worry about it. Men love it.

I live in France and grew up in America. I've worn makeup since I've been a young teen, where I live far from a big city, most girls never wear makeup other than for special occasions, and sometimes I'M the insecure one for wearing makeup when others don't feel the need to!! I guess this is a good example of how much wanting to fit in has an influence our thoughts !

I've never worn makeup.. Except trying it once as a teenager... Hated it.. Never again not even lipstick.. Not even to party's.. I've never even tried to dye my hair.. (I love being natural) if I need to look pretty, I just do my do my hair, use jewelry and wear pretty clothes.. I also have my own style.. Never followed fashion.. Love to be different. Even though I'm shy and have social anxiety..🙃

Same-grew up in the 90's. I finally started wearing mascara my junior year high school and lipstick my senior. Now that I'm 45, I wear nothing again-sometimes bronzing/blush powder and to be super special, mascara. Men still go nuts over me-why? I DON'T WEAR MAKEUP-MEN HATE MAKEUP! 😘

@@joannecendana It was a great time for me to grow up then as I was a teen throughout the 70's and even the men were just who they were. No tight skinny jeans, just tee shirts and flannels....long hair but still they looked rugged or manly. Even celebrities like Kay Lenz back in the 70's was just naturally pretty. We didn't have all these contouring products, different eyeshadows (mostly blue is what we had) and I guess it showed girls back then more natural as very little makeup was worn.

I am 35, and we are hardly no make up on a regular basis my go to is mascara. I’m constantly told how youthful I look, I told how great my skin looks, I’m constantly thought of as younger than I am, a lot of people think I am in my mid-20s and that makes me feel great. I don’t like filters I don’t like the way that over a make up is on every single person in film or in Hollywood. Why can’t wait to celebrate the way we look naturally?!

it really sucks for our generation:( especially on social media you see all these girls caking their face with makeup (even though there is nothing wrong w that), but I feel so pressured to do the same or feel ugly. Even with makeup on, I feel ugly and hideous, especially at school. Its so hard because I just don’t ever feel pretty and there’s nothing I can do about it

I have also been told I look sick without eyeliner by other women, I was told I looked like a “cancer patient”. I’ve never had a guy tell me anything about my appearance without makeup. Not all men are terrible and only attracted to looks and not all women are trying to build other women up.

I am 34 and lost my teeth due to my kids leeching nutrients from my teeth during pregnancies and i struggle to wear dentures do to sensory issues. Its crazy how going through all of that has forced me to find confidence in my own beauty. Yes i sometimes feel like i look wierd without teeth but i have found a new confidence in my value and worth. If people dont want to get to know me because i dont have teeth then i dont want that kind of energy in my life any way.

I’m a dash out the door kind of woman! I like a bit of brow powder when I can be bothered. Sleep and lots of water gives me a nice glow,in my twenties I’d wear shadow and mascara, now I only wear mascara once in a blue moon, I feel too much makeup washes out the skin and I can’t imagine what happens to delicate skin if all these layers of makeup are constantly stripped daily. I’m glad I didn’t start getting into makeup very young...

Its because sexism is ingrained into our society. Even if people don't outright say these words, these ideas of how we are somehow uglier without makeup and should be wearing it, stem from the idea that a woman's worth as a person is determined by how physically attractive she is percieved by those around her, and that we should for some reason strive to be considered attractive. Why? Why are we taught to base our self love off of the validation of others who look to unrealistic beauty standards to set their opinions?

Once a dude in a Discord channel was saying makeup is "false advertising" so I told him hey, you can wear it too. If you think it's so unfair then start learning how to use makeup so you can look flawless too. I agree that men should not demand wearing makeup from women. People in general should respect other people's decisions and looks. However I resent the 'incel' label thrown around in every argument. Due to issues in the past and some measure of social anxiety I've been an actual 'incel' in the literal sense of being involuntatirily celibate and I still hate sexism and bigotry in general and my daily routine doesn't consist in demeaning/objectifying women to raise my self-esteem or some shit like that. I would actually love living in a world where everyone is respected and loved independently from their looks. I'm afraid we're still far away from that, maybe farther then before in history. I understand that this whole incel insult is mainly aimed at a certain category of people who are so frustrated that they will become abusive and hateful - people who are truly worthy of criticism - however it strenghtens the prejudice that not getting laid/involuntarily not being in a relationship invariably leads a man to becoming a horrible person. So my suggestion is that we should stop demonizing women whose looks don't conform to societal expectations, but also stop demonizing men whose lack of relationships don't conform to those same expectations.

That's why I don't use make up, because when I did use I looked so different from the real me that it frightened me (early 20), I rather focus on a healthy skin than putting on something that makes me feel like I'm wearing a mask, even if people don't find me attractive like this it's ok. And I'm in no way condemning people who likes to wear make up, it's a personal choice.
