Thank you for this video. Even if you have the Mini factory nav this may be a better way of getting a reverse camera. The aftermarket systems that tie into factory nav require you to take apart the dash and connect to CANBUS via the factory radio. This adds risk to your entire car's operation. Accessing the dash is no joke.

Thank you for this video. Saved me a lot of time and trouble trying to figure out how to get a backup camera wire from the license plate on the bumper, into the body of the car. (Mini Cooper S, Countryman, 2012, AWD). Only had to drill 1 hole as you showed. Also thanks on HOW to detach the rear tail light. Easy. Thanks Ran the return wire through the roofline/door rubber seals, and wire is totally hidden. SO very useful video for a 2012 Countryman!

Nice, however I don’t have the patience to go through all this! I just place a 4” back up camera and monitor in my 2005 conv 1.6L Mini Cooper and hooked it up to my low beam light, so it works all the time. I got the back up camera for $23.99 through eBay and instead of wireless, I purchased a stereo/VCR wire extension and hooked it up direct instead of wireless fir a nice tight connection. And it’s awesome!

My two cents: Route the wiring thru the floor. When routing it thru the headliner, you create a isk of interfering with the side impact curtain deployment path.

This is a simple backup camera with a trigger. If you wanted to tie in to the steering you would need to get a dynamic positioning backup camera they cost a little bit more and they just require an additional step in tapping into the OBD2

Hey Raymond I got a little bit confused at the 8:24 mark. Your video skipped from finding the fuse straight to running wire. Not sure how add a fuse works. Did you pick the fuse that doesn’t have power when the car is off, then connected wire from the mirror to the add a fuse line and another line from add a fuse to the ground? Sorry for confusion first time ever attempting something like this. Thank you

Are you using the reverse light to power the camera, tapping into another circuit for full-time power (such as the handy 12V plug right there in the back), or running power from the fuse box to the rear? If using the reverse light, is there any delay between the camera receiving power and it transmitting a clear picture? If full-time power, are there any issues with the camera overheating or otherwise shortening its life? My other issue is with my mirror. I tapped into the same circuit which powers the accessory sockets (F44 on a 2014 Countryman) since literally every other fuse in the panel had power with the ignition off. It seems that the voltage from this circuit fluctuates a lot, though, and my mirror fades off and on rapidly. I am hoping a capacitor kit (like the ~$6 one from your other video) will stabilize and fix this. If not, any other ideas? Thanks for the great video and for any advice you have!
@RaymondUrias
@RaymondUrias 5 лет назад
You can run it to the fuse box and it won't have any problems. There is nothing wrong with a camera having power at all times while the car is on.... Make sure your backup camera doesn't have LEDs or IRs they will burn out. I don't understand... Having power when you have ignition is favorable. What you don't want to have is power while the car is off. You can use a relay or capacitor and it will work perfectly fine... In rare situations I have had to use both a relay and capacitor. The capacitor was used on the signal from the reverse which then fed into the relay... Very tough situation... You could also pull the reverse signal from the wire harness under the steering column as well, but you really need to know what you are looking for.
@mathematicalmaker
@mathematicalmaker 5 лет назад
@@RaymondUrias Thanks for the reply! I was trying to find another ignition-switched circuit because I was under the impression my accessory circuit was unstable because the symptom was that the display would blink on and off erratically. I did some more troubleshooting by setting my multimeter to track the maximum and minimum voltages and eliminated that as the cause. It turns out that the voltage coming off my reverse bulb, which is triggering the mirror to switch on the display, is only 9.5 volts. This apparently isn't sufficient for my mirror, which is a Master Tailgaters MR-43-E2M. I plan to fix it with a voltage regulator which will step up the voltage from 9.5 to 12 volts. Current isn't an issue since this is just the signal input which shouldn't draw much at all. I decided to use this voltage regulator (I bought 10 of them, so I have 9 left for Arduino and ESP8266 projects!): amzn.to/2Pvp70v It works perfectly now. For anyone facing the same issue, here are the connections. Rear: Camera power and ground are wired to the accessory outlet in the trunk. The signal wire on the RCA cable is connected to the reverse light. Fuse panel/front: Ground wires for the mirror and voltage regulator (Vin-) are connected to the screw Raymond identified. Power for the camera is connected to the accessory fuse. Vin+ for the voltage regulator is connected to the signal wire coming from the trunk. Output from the voltage regulator (Vout+) is connected to the signal wire for the mirror. (Note: before connecting everything I adjusted to potentiometer on the regulator until the output was 12 volts. This is critical as these regulators are not pre-set.)

This monitor is still in my wife's mini and she uses it every day for directions, backing up. It's tight and no wobble. I just installed this exact mirror on my wife’s Countryman and cannot thank you enough for the video. I have run into a problem though and am not getting any back up picture on the car whatsoever. I get the back up lines, but no picture. I did not use a capacitor on the rear reverse light. Could not using a capacitor be the problem, or do you think I have a faulty camera? Lastly, what size fuse did you use for the extra (new) fuse in the add on? I have it as the 20 amp original and the 10 amp that came with the add on. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@RaymondUrias
@RaymondUrias 5 лет назад
I would check to make sure the camera works by touching the wires to a 12v constant (A battery will do the trick and so will the cigarette lighter). If the camera works then you need to install a capacitor. This is a must do step on German cars in particular. I used a the OEM fuse for lower level on the add a fuse and I used a 3amp for the upper level
@brianhargrave9449

Hey I just stumbled onto your channel. I have. a 2012 Mini Countryman like your wife's car. I liked this video and what you did. But I'm somewhat confused on the Miracast portion. I have a brand new Samsung Note 9 (Aug. 2018) (Hate Crapple myself) but I don't do screen mirroring much. I found a setting called "mirrorLink". Do you know if this Note 9 will work with that mirror? if not are there other's that will? Thanks

I believe all samungs have Miracast, it just goes by a different name. I would probably research it a bit more though. My Google pixel 3 has "cast" but it's not Miracast and doesn't screen share where my wife's new LG v40 has a cast function and she can enable screen mirroring and it works fine. Unfortunately this is one of the only screens that support this feature. Which is awesome for maps!
