The so-called gasoline engine piston rings are actually the oil rings without the insert that goes between them. You can actually see the marks where the insert rode. They are NOT compression rings.
@simmcowaPang122
@simmcowaPang122 2 года назад
What is the purpose of the insert if the rings are to seal the cylinder and scrape oil?? Genuinely curious
@mrsandman914
@mrsandman914 2 года назад
@@simmcowaPang122 the oil rings are three piece. The outer thin rings keep the oil from passing into the combustion chamber. The inner wider corrugated ring acts as a damper and separates the thinner rings.

So how would the chonky rings break, but not the little ones? And aren't you just compressing the rings just a little bit to fit in the cylinder? Not a mechanic so I don't know.
@MattsShop
@MattsShop 2 года назад
They are cast rings, very hard, but brittle. The slightest off-axis motion with shatter them. The little thin rings are a metal that will bend and not shatter. The compressor gradually compresses the rings because it is tapered like a V.

@@MattsShop man do you need some edum a cation on cars. None of those rings will ever break or shatter like you say because you only compressing the rings to match the sleeve you are not crushing them. If those or any rings break while you compressing then the piston must of cracked cause the rings and piston are dam there the same size when installed. 😆
