Installing 100 Amp Service Wire To Work Shop

Today we are running a 100 amp service wire from the house to The work shop. We will wire it into the main panel in the house and also into the main panel in the work shop.
This is not a tutorial, I'm just showing what we did. .
I'm not an electrician, we are just doing this for our own self. We followed instructions from the builder supply that we purchased all of the materials from. We were told that a 3 wire install was ok as long as we grounded it at the sub panel. I checked a shop across the road from me and it was wired with 3 wires also. I did the install just like the shop across the road that was wired by a licensed electrician several years ago. I have learned recently that the new code requires 4 wires. The 3 wire system will work but does not meet code. We are going to go back and run an extra wire to make it meet the current code. If you are doing this check with your local electrical codes for more info. I hope that this info will help to clarify what I did. Calvin

Did I miss the ground in the subpanel? I know the screw needs to be removed to seperate neutrals and grounds but I didn`t see them run a ground or ground rod to the ground bar.

It’s a good idea to coat the wire at the connection with contact grease as specialty if you have aluminum to metal contact, this will keep it from causing corrosion and becoming a bad connection.

You do not need to. But you do need a ground rod and the green screw must be installed in the panel. For the most part you are correct. Ground rod required, conductors in conduit to the panel, trench too shallow. But, please get your NEC and read 250.32(B)(1) Exceptions 1 and 2. I am referencing 2017 NEC. The NEC is still waffling on the installation of a feeder to a separate building. It has gone back and forth since I started in 1983. Basically the rule is as you stated, and the exceptions are as in video, minus ground rod and is allowed. Personally, I wish they would have stated the rule and exception said past installations are allowed to remain, but the didn't. Respectfully, Kevin

I am an electrician. Do not under any circumstances perform your install with this as a guide. In a sub panel to a separate structure you must: Run 4 wires. 2 conductors, a neutral AND a ground. This is not because of local code. It is NATIONAL CODE. And is absolutely a safety concern due to objectionable current. You are also to instal ground rods because it is a separate structure. The only exception is if you run no more than 1 multifeed circuit in the shed. There is to be a number 6 bare CU run to said ground rods at a minimum. You must have the conductors ran in some sort of raceway all the way to the panel. I thought he was pulling our leg when he Landed them into the panel with no form of protection. This is improper and 100% against electrical code. It is also aluminum and Noalox or any other Form of antioxidant rated for aluminum is required. It is a safety hazard which is why it is required. The neutrals and the grounds in the sub panel must be separated from each other. The grounds and neutrals are only to be bonded at 1 single point (at the first means of service disconnect). Also per NEC and not local code And the trench the conduit was buried in was Extremely shallow. Please for the love of god leave this kind of work up to the trained sparkies

@@jonathanbaxter5821 Hello John I have been a commercial/residential electrician for 6 years and have run my own projects. I am not going to talk about the code itself but i varies greatly from city to city and neighbor hood to neighbor hood. I just want to say for the end there about about the electrician getting flagged. I don't know your electrician personally like I know other guys in how he did his work but getting flagged even the guys with the most experience happens at times. First there is the instance that may be on the masters electricians fault and that is having his guys do it and not checking himself before saying were good for inspection. Two is that the electrical code changed recently in that county and he just wasn't informed of it. The way electrical code works is every 3 years a code book is published nationally. But that doesn't mean the code is that for the county. The local building department has to decide if they will even accept any of the new codes. And sometimes they will accepts codes that were made more then 3 years ago will now be accepting them. So there are times that the electricians will do work and get flagged because the electrical code will have changed without them knowing. Now you might think why don't you just try hard to keep track of these changes. Well theres two reasons why that can be very hard: One is that electricians usually work in many different counties so keeping an eye on all lets say 10 of them can be very difficult because of the second reason. Second the only way to know when there is a change is to read the transcript of like 40 pages for a 4 to 5 hour meeting where in the end they could say there won't be any changes. So most of the time its a waste of time and just easier to have the inspector come by just to let you know oh this changed for the area just fix it. So in the end you could read the code book your self but trust me if you did it exactly as is you might be wasting so much time and money because the county doesn't require it. P.S. Neutral and ground have needed to be separated since 1987 google it.

By what I can see from the limited views of the sub panel.....it looks like the neutral/ground are tied together. It may let you turn the lights on and run some power tools.....but as soon as you have some kind of short/fault you're gonna have personal safety/ fire hazard issues. Take that bottom strap that bonds the two bars together off and get a grounding strap for the bar with the bare ground wires that will bond it with the sub panel and run a ground outside to ground rods. This is how people get electrocuted and structures burn to the ground.

In the Sub panel you have to make sure your neutral buss is not bonded to the can (panel). You have run a fourth wire from the main panel, a ground, and attach it to a ground bar that you will have to add that is bonded to the can. You will also have to install (2) ground rods at the Sub panel and attach them to the same ground bar. The Neutral and ground wire will attach at the same place on the neutral/ground bar in the Main Panel since it is the first point of distribution. After the first point of distribution (panel) the neutral and ground have to be kept separate.

bolt cutters will work wonders for that thick gauge wiring. Harbor Freight tools has them pretty cheap... especially using a %20 off coupon. Also, an 8ft copper grounding rod for your back building might also be required (in addition to the ground from the main panel). That is relatively new in the NEC.

I'm pretty sure that wire is supposed to be run through conduit the entire way (right from panel to panel). It may be okay where you are but I'm pretty sure that is national code in the states too (I'm from Canada). I see you have rectified the issue of the dedicated ground. Part of that is you must have the ground and neutral wires segregated in the sub panel and the bonding screw on the neutral bus bar removed.

The wiring they used is approved for underground burial, which can be used without conduit. They didn't show it, but it needs to be a certain depth, usually 12-24" depending on if it goes under a walkway, driveway etc.... They can even go as shallow as 4 inches as long as they pour 4 inches of concrete over it. I didn't see them take out the bonding screw either, but I hope they did. They also didn't trim the Romex sheathing to within 1 inch of where they enter the panel. Looks like 3-4 inches to me, which is not allowed.

Hi. I'm a retired electrician from England. Of course there are some differences in the 'code' but overall its much the same. Electricity is electricity. No difference between France and Greenland. You did a great job explaining everything. And like the way you did not connect wires clumsily like just doing the short route, always leaving some slack by following the corners like in the main boxes. We don't use aluminum at all inside residences always copper. I liked the tip of getting all the wires in the box, there is not much room in them and the wires are very stiff. We're lucky in that the boxes are bigger and because of the European standard 230 volts it means of course that the wires are less stiff. What I found here is that I have yet to see burning at sockets and switches even when switching fluorescents. In the UK its very very common. Must be the voltage difference. Great video, thank you.

Besides not having a ground wire in the sub panel, I would’ve left more slack in your phases. Aluminum wire is notorious for expanding/contracting, if you ever need to cut off the ends and demand it they would be to short. Run it on the same side as the nuetral and over the top and the down to the breaker. Can’t ever have to much slack.

Did you just add a new 100 amp breaker into a full 200 amp panel,? Doesn't that overload the panel?

I'm wondering why you used a main panel for the sub-panel. There's no need for a main breaker at the sub-panel. Also, in the shed, why didn't you turn the box 1980 degrees for a bottom service entry? There's more room at the main lug end of the panel, and you would not have had to route the #2 to the top and bend it for the connection. Ditto on the lubricant others mentioned.

@@SouthernCountryLiving that is 100amp on #2 aluminum right? We ran 180ft of it to do 100amp breaker in house to 100sub panel in the workshop. I was afraid after running all that underground that my wire was to small! Hope you can answer that

You can watch my other video and it tells more about how the outlets are wired. This is a link to the video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SvwkY31Kv8k.html
