This week we are diving into the 1978 Jeep J10's old suspension and overhauling it with a new Rough Country 3 inch Suspension Lift. In today's video I will be tackling the front suspension. This lift install is going to be very similar if not the same for other full size Jeeps, such as the Wagoner, J20, Grand wagoner, and Cherokees. Today I will show you how to do the whole job from start to finish by removing the old suspension and replacing with the new. If you have any questions that the video does not cover, make sure to leave them below.

New suspension is one of my favourite steps when giving an old 4wd a new lease on life. Great vid, looking forward to part 2.

Excited for part 2! :) I'm literally about a month away from doing the shocks on my 76 Jeep J10. Your videos are so helpful. My grandpa wouldn't teach me this stuff because I'm a woman. So youtube has been helping me out so much. Yours are the best I've found.

Great detail on the install. I really appreciate your leaving in your mistakes, I sometimes wonder if it is just me that has to do things more than once.

I like the part where the jack drops the frame hits those jack stands.

Great video! man, you are brave with so much anti seize! good job on working section by section on cleaning and repainting... projects get crazy expensive if you try to do all of it all at once!

Great video and timing. I'm ordering my j10 lift next week. Thanks for the detail and mistakes as well as parts. Things I never thought of. Every lift I have seen they undo everything on both sides then rebuild. Seems like doing one side at a time would be easier at least to the point before tightening it down. Can't wait for the rest of the build.

Yup I like to tackle little tasks at a time and go through everything I can whatever job I'm doing. It helps keep the motivation up.

This was super informative for someone who is new to 4x4 and solid axles. Thank you! Question though: I see you said to flip the leafs so long end is in the front. Doesn't this push your axle a few inches back though and now the wheel isn't centered in the arch? I ask because I have an F250 axle to install and I'm trying to understand the dynamics of buying new leafs. The Wagoneer has a 2" offset short side in front. I figured I would source another leaf (heavier, because of a diesel motor swap) to try to match that offset to keep the wheel centered but I don't know what this will mean for my pinion angle? I need to understand the impacts the leafs have on the suspension geometry before I buy...

Yeah its coming, I'm in the process of moving so all work on the j10 came to a halt.

The tips really are helpful. Since I had already gotten the replacement steering stabilizer, I noticed that the bolt/stud going through the new spring had extra threads. So I found a washer and ground it down to the size of the hole in the plate, now it sticks through enough.

Will be interested to see what you find on taking apart the rear. Complete pain in the butt on mine. Front went back together fine

@@richsmith103ks From what I can tell so far, the shocks came out nice. But the rest shackle hangers are rotted out so I have some Ford Ranger ones to replace them with.

@@OutJeeping The underside of my 78 at some time early in its life, had like a 1/8" layer of what looks like tar put on it as a rust preventative. So even though the floors and fenders and rockers all have rust, the frame and suspension are in nearly new condition. I have everything buttoned up on the front and the tires back on. Getting the axel in the right spot to drop together in the rear is a challenge, but now that I have one side, I think I can get the other. On the front, the U bolts went right in the old brackets, on the back I am using a big C clamp to compress them enough to go. Tried the vice, but they just kept springing all the way back.

Few questions here, as I plan to do this to my 78 J10. Did you need an offset pitman arm, longer brake lines - which ones?.
@OutJeeping
@OutJeeping 2 года назад
I haven't upgraded my steering yet but I would assume the pitman arm should be find. There is no track bar with leaf springs in the front so the steering angle isn't as important with issues relating to bump steer on coil sprung front ends.

Tried to put the same kit you have on my 78 J10 and the U-Bolts in the kit for rear diff are too wide by about 3/16ths. (OEM is 2 7/8' ~ Kit was 3 1/8) so looks like order a different set for Rear anyway, Front looks long enough thread extra so I can reuse them. Instructions are a bit erroneous, it says "If your spring is (over the axle)(mine are) you will need to place the shim so the Thick end is "facing outward". I guess their definition of "outward" is toward rear of truck.? Looking at it, it appears the thick end needs to point toward the front to correct for the driveline angle. What did you wind up doing?? Read other posts on other kit-brands ppl put thick side toward rear. I could use a little advice here. thx

I appreciate the videos. I have a '79 J10 and I am looking for photo references for how the e-brake cables route. Mine came with NO e-brake system at all. Any help would be awesome.

Unfortunately I don't have any reference from my own Jeep. The E-brake cables were removed from axles up to the cable coming from the foot petal lol.

Nice work-I have a J10 I am looking to buy and started looking for parts and seems not easy to find even used-is there a source for stuff like the front brush guard and other accessories?

The best sites I've found for replacement parts is BJ's Offroad and Rockauto.

Thanks for the video, I was wondering if you could give exact names or links to the products you used to paint your frame? When I do the lift on my XJ, I'd like to do some rust repair and prevention while I'm under there. Thanks!

put one hand on the socket and hold it straight while trying to break loose the shock nuts, less chance of snapping it by not applying force at an angle.
