Installing a Custom Air Intake on a Toyota Corolla

I pieced together an air intake for a 1995 Toyota corolla using bits and pieces I had lying around. A replacement stock air filter would have cost about $25 which is way more than I wanted to pay for a filter so I built this instead!
The car is a 1.6L Toyota Corolla (E100) with a 3 speed automatic transmission. The filter is a generic one from ebay and the intake tube was for a chevrolet 3.1 engine (also bought from ebay). I know this is not a "cold air intake" but seeing how dirty the old filter was I think this will make a big difference in power and fuel economy. This is over sized for this motor so there should be very little resistance. I took the car for a test drive and it has a lot more top end power then before.

Always wondered where the intake snorkel was... The Starlet has the intake snorkel running across the top of the engine bay to the front. Makes a lot more sense and is more convenient. Also it has more of a "cold air intake" effect than whatever this is.

The hose should be longer so the filter is pointed to the ground pulling the air up from the ground so it's cold hose is way too short going to throttle body. Next step would be to do the exhaust. With exhaust done and cold air intake you'll get about 35 horsepower in your car Mitsubishi galant was a v6 3.8 liter did exhaust and cold air intake I got a 48 hp gain. Car came with 160 hp was close to 210. After miss that car it sounded nice

I decided to get a ebay cold air intake but I still want to at least use the bottom of the air box as a base & build a heat shield on it (and obviously around the filter)

@@LilChiefLuna I decided to ditch the custom heat shield idea & want to reroute my intake towards the bumper cause whenever the fan kicks in automatically, it blows that hot air towards the intake lol

I'd just chuck the afs down to throttle body and not worry about any filters or boxes. My 1.6 doesnt have oil and water but still runs like the day it was new 24 years ago

@@wycliffjean1861 If it’s near the engine bay with no box then it’ll suck up a heap of hot air but if it’s located somewhere where it actually gets cold air then you don’t need a box

Is it possible to build a heat shield on a short ram cold air intake? been thinking of getting either Spectre or a K&N cold air intake & building a heat shield unless its possible to replace the factory intake tube with a metal intake tube (as of you're adding a cold air intake kit) but still keep the factory air box & use an aftermarket drop in filter

@Jose Hermano Actually the mileage will increase. You will notice at least a small increase in performance. More air intake = better mixture of fuel with oxygen = better firing of gasoline.

You are supposed to let it run for at least a half hour before revving/driving. If you don't do this, your check engine light comes on.

As long as you have the 02 sensor in it you should be solid. On new cars I’m not sure to scared to put one on my 16’ fusion

If it was enclosed in a box and tubing to the front of ebgine bay for cold air, then it should be about the same as the stock box Sounds abit better

Unless you're trying to make peak HP at high RPM all the time, a warm intake is actually great. Increasing IAT reduces air charge density slightly, leading to a wider throttle opening for the same total air flow. That means reduced pumping losses. Better MPG, especially in winter.

Yes, if air can be more easily accessible to the engine you'll get better combustion. And better combustion means more horsepower. But be careful because you don't want to add polluted air inside the engine so always make sure the performance air intake is right for your car.

No this harms performance because your sucking up all the heat in the engine bay! There is no shielding to help prevent hot air getting and hot air is less dense meaning your get worse performance!

Secondly your car's ECU is set to target the torque that the factory engine is supposed to have. Without adjusting variables in your ECU you don't gain horsepower or torque. Air filters don't make horsepower that give back what lost to a more restrictive filiter but only if the same temperature air is being sucked in that the stock air filter was. More is gained back if the air temperature has been lowered.

There isn't any air flow sensor, it's a air temperature sensor, the car utilizes a map sensor instead of a MAF sensor

Looks line ur 3 inch pipe will be so close to motor that all u will note be sucking up is HOT AIR. should be called a HOT air intake. U'll gain noise and lose hp,

TheHowToChannel i swear it said cold air intake on title, im sorry not. trying to be mean. i setup my intake highflow aem filter in stock air box and replaced the tubing with polyurethane k&n tubing. definitely felt a difference. you probably get better gas mileage though. ☺

Well just to let you know, these 99 1.6 petrol corollas are actually fast, I easily won several races against bmws and also volkswagens like 1.9tdi passat , even chipped ones or an a3 2.0 tdi . And bmw is just trash , just compare a german 1.6 to a japan 1.6 easy japan win .

Gustavo Mandl he clearly just fabbed it on the spot! just some clamps, piping, and a cheapo cone filter. also drill hole for air sensors and such but that's about it!
