Installing A Hardtop On My Vintage Jeep!

Installing a hardtop on my vintage Jeep! Just in time for the cold weather of winter I’ve got the hardtop installed in the old cj5. The hardtop I installed is a vintage meyers hard top. The half top really gives the Jeep a unique look. I have seen this style of hard top on old Willys flatfenders (cj2a, cj3a, cj3b) but I feel like this style is pretty unique for a later Jeep. It was a fun project and a great upgrade. Huge shoutout to my buddy Reece for driving hours and hours and my new friend Dane!

Man, I remember when I was younger and was willing to deal with driving a vehicle that was cold in the winter. I drove Corvairs through the winter for many years and if you know Corvairs at all, you know the heating system was basically non-existent. Granted, Wisconsin winter is way different than Tennessee, but...now I need a vehicle with a blast furnace heater! I'm over driving with my teeth chattering. LOL Even when I plow snow with my "Bah, Bah black Jeep" CJ7 with a hard top, I think every time..."Dang! I'm gonna have to put a wood stove in the back of this thing or something. I'm freezing to death and I can't see out of the soft ball size hole the defrosters are making in the frosted windshield!" Great job, though, Jacob! I like how you always do things right rather than just cobbling together. You always do a great job on whatever you do!

I think these early Jeeps look the best with a half cab like that! Its definitely easier to heat a half cab over a full one.

I found a Scrambler half cab in a non automotive junkyard and put it on my cj7. Made my own bulkhead as Scrambler bulkheads are stupid money. I don’t drive it in the winter but it’s great in spring and fall. Yours looks great! Greetings from eastern ontario

My 67 came with a full top. I took the doors apart and used the blind rivet nuts for reasonably. Hint: buy extra dies for 6/32 & 8/32. They break really easy.

You can add Rivnuts to the body where the top will mount to. They run flush with the sheet metal and allow you to unbolt the top and go with the ragtop in the summer.

Looks great on there. I agree I have not seen them on Cj5s either, but I have one obviously made by the same company that I bought used years ago for my '2A. Mine came with what looks like a factory bulkhead. It angles forward and down from where it attaches to the top and mounts to where the cargo floor drops down right behind the seats. I made the mistake of taking it off a few summers ago and leaving it out by the garage where some lowlife stole the doors...

👍🛠️💪 A good up grade would be to put some peel and stick style insulation and sound deading. I had to weld up around 35 holes in my tub on my yj that people had drilled and screwed into it.

Good Stuff! It looks great. I have an M38-A1 that was a fire department rig, still has siren and wig wag red lights. Lots of fun and functional too. Skinny tires, no lift, a great little fishing jeep. All the best from Nor-Cal. Keep it up!

I just traded some stuff and 500$ for a 1948 willys jeep that has a top kinda like yours, but the metal is heavier, and the roof slopes up, but it doesn't have the curve. I found a company doing searches that made the old tops, but i have to do another search, because i can't find the junkmail i wrote it down on lol. G-d bless.

@@-oiiio-3993 that’s cool that you have one of those. I know what you are referring to. I made some in 16 ga paint grip metal just a couple of years back. I made about 6 of them and sold them for about $500. The red primer ones I saw were about 7 or 800. I lucked up and found an original 1946 version that someone had put up in there barn 40 years ago and decided to post it on facebook. It was a dream to find an original and he only charged me 400 for it. I figured after I saw the primer priced ones you are talking about, I would try and make some for folks and tried keeping the price more reasonable. Glad you found one. I looked for about 3 years before I managed to find one.

not familiar with hard tops for jeeps but ive been told none of them fit really well ive been told the milatary hard tops fit the best Edit: you dont want to use riv nuts they spin in the holes easy and are better suited for static loads not anautomobile where the stresses change (frame flex and wind resistance) you just do better cinch that top down with machine screws and nylock nuts or lock washers also for your weather stripping camper shell tape will take care of that for you its peel and stick and likely what the manufacturer orgianally used for weather proofing
