Installing a Ram Mount into a 5th Gen Toyota 4runner

Super clean install of a Ram Mount X-Grip cell phone holder in a 5th gen Toyota 4Runner. This video can also be used to be a how-to disassemble your dash as we needed to take it apart to mount the Female Ram Mount. The Ram Mount X-Grip holds the phone very well through some of the ruffest terrain we have experienced. I have yet to have the phone fall out. The adjustability is terrific as you can position the placement of your phone in almost any position.

After a few months of use, it is solid. On/off-road, the mount has not budged. It's super user-friendly, durable, and just makes sense.

Thanks for the post Jimmy. Your vid was very helpful. I’m really enjoying this phone mount. I took your advice and included a washer. I also added a little thread lock to keep the bolt in place. I decided to add a small second hole to run my charging cable behind the dash out by where my phone will sit. I’m digging it.

Pro Tip: Use a 1" fender washer and another washer slightly smaller, along with a locking washer stacked on the inside which creates a better structure and removes any flex that you would get using a bolt alone with no washer. Stiffins up the entire mount..

I love this set up it does rotate a little on the trail so you have to rotate it clockwise to get it to stay in position. I’m looking for a wireless charger version of this. I have an iPhone XS Max. Any ideas out there?

Hey, I had a magnet mount and it didn't work very well with the weight of the phone. I have yet to take this out on the trail but it has been working great on the road. Word of caution! To get the RAM ball tight enough to avoid spinning I caused a couple micro cracks that I've mended from the inside with some JB Weld, hope it works. Otherwise it is the best possible location for the phone, absolutely ideal. If I had to do it all over again considering, would use the diamond ball mount and that way 2 screws would be more stable and wouldn't have to tighten so much (but would need a couple of plastic washer shims due to the curve of the console (the reason why I like the single RAM mount to begin with). Pretty thin walled stuff!

I have been using a magnet mount and hate it. I just ordered the Ram Mount X-Grip and I wanted to as is there a way to hide the USB cable so I don't have it hanging down in front of everything?

I don't have a slick trick, but you could rap it around the arm to pull it backwards. You could also pop another hole in the dash at the same location and run the cable behind the dash. I probably wouldn't do that because I like to swap cables out and move them around often.

Yes, there is a nut behind the dash. I don't recall the exact size. We did use a nylon lock nut so it wouldn't come loose.

Wonder if the 2018 TRD Off Road edition has a different dash mounting securement as I'm unable after several attempts to get the right lower dash piece to disengage. JMan 41 below said he was surprised at how easy they are to remove. Do I press toward middle of dash at a particular pressure point before pulling out or is it just straight outward? Also doesn't look like RAM mounts makes a female thread connector any longer, only the male M10 x 1.25 pitch mount p/n RAM-B-349U and the link above for this female version say unavailable. Wonder of the male version is long enough to take a nylock nut on the inside?

Found the female adapter on another page in Amazon but getting the lower dash out is the issue with my 2018. Maybe I'm just getting weak in my old age lol but it looked very easy for you.

Yup, getting weak and too careful in my old age, finally got it after numerous attempts. Was working about breaking something and just needed that little extra grip and pull . . . straight out. Rerouting a USB charging cable is an option to I guess!

LOL. You know it's bad when you've pruned and cut 3 acres worth of trees this summer and pumped up those forearms and still had a hard time. Now that I know exactly how they disengage it's a piece of cake. Question! Having a hard time finding the female threaded ball in Canada (1/4"-20) but they do have the male type at my supplier. The difference in price is over $25 for that one fitting!? Wonder if the male option would have a long enough thread to accept a nylock nut on the inside of the dash? Have you any experience with the opposite option on this one?

Had mine installed for months and absolutely love it. My question is should I tighten it up more because it likes to shake and vibrate. Or would tightening it up more crack the plastic?

SnailTrail4x4 the ball stud is completely tight and will not spin. I’ve got the medium length arm with a x grip large phone mount. Got to be from the arm and attachment right? Any suggestions?

It could very well just be from the length and weight of the mount and the plastic is so thin that the ball mount is mounted to

+Dennis Cudal -- you need to buy the washer and bolt, they aren't included when you buty them on Amazon. I believe the bolt was 1/4-20 x 3/4 long. But I'd take the female end into the hardware store to double check.

Actually the size 1/4 - 20 X 1/2 bolt worked best. I drilled the hole a little too far back and was kind of a tight fit because that plastic brace for the clip was there. I should of looked before I drilled... but I bought a bolt with a flatter head (Allen key) and was able to squeeze it in with the washer. Very cool mod and it looks great. Thanks for this tutorial

If it's the ball mount that you attached to your dash then it sounds like the nut on the back came loose. I'd open it back up and replace it with a nylon locking nut or add a lock washer. I hope that helps.

@@nickdixon14 -- Yes. If you're concerned with ityou can always add a large washer or some metal plate to spread out the surface area tension. I would also highly suggest to use either loctite, a lock washer or a locking

SnailTrail4x4 I ended up going with large washer front and back and lock washer front and back, if I push down on the mount it will go down but takes a lot of force, should I leave it or try and tighten more? It’s not affected by bumps
