Installing and Connecting new Water Mains - DIY

The water is now all connected and we are very happy with the result. With a bit of hard work and minimal material costs our flow rate is over three times what it was and we have a much cleaner and future proof supply.
All connections were carried out on our water company's lead/iron replacment scheme so it was just a case of getting a form filled in and the new pipework checked.
I hope this helps any of you who are struggling with old pipework and poor flow rates.

Just came across this video. We need a new boiler but the engineer told us the flow rate is far too low so I am in exactly the same position (old victorian house 1878). No sure about the digging though so I think £100 to hire a mini digger for the weekend will be my choice or a moler but likely to be the digger as the moling companies can be expensive, less mess and quicker but probably 10x the cost of a mini digger. Great job, well done.

Thanks for video and btw great job 👍 I need to do similar project but I am not certain about few things. I need to decide which route and which pipe I should use. My incoming water mains pipe from my footing trenches is kind of black plastic pipe and has 35mm outer diameter. I hope that I should not have any trouble to connect my new mdpe 32 pipe to the mains pipe. Biggest challenge I have is to route new pipe to the loft as there are corners 90 degrees on the way and don't know if mdpe pipe can be bend so much. Other option could be to route whith the multilayer pipe 32 mm but on the entry to the house I want to fit a ball valve and equal tee and not sure if the fittings for mdpe pipes will be compatible with the pex al pex pipes. I saw there are some inserts to connect different types of pipe but never done this. If someone could help and advise I would be very grateful.

Hi, I am in the middle of replacing my water pipe and have few questions. Could you please tell me where did you buy the rubber gourmets? I need it for 25mm pipe and cannot find them anywhere :( Does the pipe need to be insulated in the duct and all the way from the main valve to the valve in the house? do I have to put the duct only under the foundations and where I think the extension will be in the future? Thank you in advance
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 6 лет назад
I think the grommet was from a plumbing merchant and possibly one you trimmed down to size. Otherwise you could perhaps use an end cap and drill a 25mm hole? Yes duct is just to protect where pipe runs under walls or future walls. Insulation is just for where it rises out of the ground near house. In UK I guess it would never freeze 750mm under surface so not needed. All the info was on a PDF from water company though so best to check.
@Nathan-dx7le
@Nathan-dx7le 4 года назад
On the off-chance you still spot responses to this video, who inspected the trench and pipe before you filled it in? A building inspector or the water company? I need to do a connection to my new house (old barn) and the area is a bit grey but this video is the best info I've found anywhere. Presently I've got 750mm dug under the house wall ready for doing what you've done with soil pipe to bring the feed up through the soon to be poured sub-slab. Thanks. Nathan.
@TheRestorationCouple

It was water company, just a chap with a clipboard to check it over. They manage the replacement of old lead/iron pipework so did the checks on house side before digging up road. If it’s a new development then BCO might do it or at least want to see it but not sure I’m afraid.

@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 5 лет назад
Regs just required it to be insulated for the last section as it comes back up to ground level. The info is available online. It will never freeze at 750mm deep so only as it comes to surface that is the risk.

Hi all, I just had my main water pipe mdpe 32mm installed and my water pressure or flow has improved very very little. My house is about 15m from main feed pipe. They done 32mm from main to footpath (10)m long then installed stop cock which was 25mm then out again with 32mm for 5m long and inside the house. What makes me think that they done shit job is because they drilled under ground all the way with some air pressure piece of metal which was like a drill and drilled all the way thru to the other side of the road and pulled the pipe by force and it wasnt even 100% straight in line. I am thinking that maybe the pipe has got squeezed somewhere underground as it was very tight and no sand or anything is around it to protect the pipe from squeezing. Am i right or not pls as I am very stressed I paid £2350 for this job.

Great work mate, you mention the water company has an obligation to repair old pipework, who digs first though? What if you had done all the digging and water company turned and did not do their bit. That would be counterproductive- you would have had 32mm on the inside but outside pipe would still be at small. Bottom line how do you convince and organise with them? Thanks mate for any advice
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 6 лет назад
+Keyur Dhruv just followed their guide for old pipe replacement. They tell you how deep, how wide and where to dig to. You just then let them know once ready to connect. It’s just like building regs, they care out before and during then contractors did the road side in a morning.

The Restoration Couple great thanks I will be calling my water company tomorrow to things moving. However, one question begs: if I were to to get them to replace their external pipes to 25mm and then replace my supply pipe to 25mm, but the actual internal house pipework would still be around 15mm would that affect the water pressure? Or would I still end up gaining a little more pressure anyway.
@TheRestorationCouple
@TheRestorationCouple 6 лет назад
This whole thing is more about flow rate than pressure. For us, although our pressure is relatively low in our area the flow rate made a big improvement. Even though you have 15mm runs in the house the main supply is much improved over what would have been less than 10mm bore by the time is was so corroded. I wouldn't concern to much over 25 v 32mm.

modern regulations require closed cell insulation for the pipe entering the duct. Something like 25-32mm wall Armaflex is more than sufficient depending on what bore size pipe you go with. You can also use SHalloduct which is ideal if used with Twinwall instead of soil pipe ducting.
@DanHuddart0
@DanHuddart0 9 лет назад

@TheRestorationCouple

I used some thick walled 28mm pipe insulation which gets round the 32mm fine. To be honest it probably does not need insulating as it is at floor level but they recommend doing it just in case.

you are lucky that your utility provider allows 32mm pipe to be connected considering you said you had 15mm. Under lead replacement schemes they do like for like and in the case of United Utilities who operate in the NW of England they only allow 25mm pipe. Even using a 32mm pipe to a short 25mm pipe to the street stop end with a reducer valve they don't permit. I guess things have gotten more strict in the 9 years this video was made.

+Jk Prat Unless it is under lots of floors, fancy driveways or other tricky places that sounds quite a lot. I would suggest that you enquire to get a general builder to do it as there is not actually much plumbing involved. All that is involved is digging the trench to the correct depth and destination, the materials are minimal and plumbing is only needed at the house side as the water company do the other. Unless complex it would be a days digging and laying plus a couple of hours of plumbing.
@ktmidol
@ktmidol 8 лет назад
Thank you for your suggestion. I will inquire this with thames water and ask them if they can replace the lead pipes for me. There are still few lead pipes hanging around the house. Will this cause high lead quantity in the water? Thames water requirement when I checked today is >10 micrograms/litre. I am not sure however if they only deal upto the water metre which is located on the road or the pipes that actually supply our house.

They had to drag a new pipe across the road for us. In the end the full process probably took about 4 months with Thames Water. The pipe inspection went fine... However, they cancelled on us twice and then there was an odd situation where 1 team came in and replaced the pipe across the road, but then reconnected to the old lead pipe - even though we had laid out our new pipe for them to connect. ANOTHER team then came out and disconnected the lead pipe and connected to our new pipe (about 1 foot away...). From my perspective, the whole thing seemed horribly inefficient - from having to print out a form and mailing it to request the lead test to the various cancellations and convoluted way of organising the work. The guys who actually did the work were fine, but the whole bureaucracy above them seemed to be designed to discourage replacements. Hopefully I was just unlucky. Oh - one last thing... I have been searching online for how the pipe should be protected - we have the new supply now. The Thames Water guide (we received a paper copy - not online...) we were provided with states that we must meet Water Supply Regulations 1999, but did not really provide much detail as to how this applied in the very specific case of pipe replacement - could have been more helpful here... However, I did find a better guide from Anglican Water (I am assuming the insulation/ducting to protect the pipe is a requirement up and down the country - I need to check with plumber): www.anglianwater.co.uk/_assets/media/Laying_of_water_supply_pipes_prior_to_connection2.pdf

For god's sake people please quit using sharkbite fittings in permanent installs! They were only ever designed for temporary fixes and odd jobs. They will loosen up and start leaking over time guaranteed.

Pipe diameter does not increase pressure, you need to study BERNOULLI'S EQUATION.

This is all about getting better flow rate to house. Only way we get better pressure is if the street supply increases, ( or we pumped). 👍

The Restoration guy, what a load of waffle - are you a member of the Drones Club? Its a simple DIY video not an extended ego trip. Where's the other half of the couple - has she passed out with terminal boredom? Show, show everything for your viewer dont talk them into near catatonic states. Watch my lips - its video ie. pictures.
