How to correctly pull new thermostat wire for Honeywell Wifi Thermostat. The customer’s new thermostat requires a common for power. Always make sure to turn off the breakers and to pay close attention to the existing wiring, taking a picture is always helpful. When checking your wires you can check them at the condenser to make sure that the original thermostat was wired in correctly. A good trick to use when running new thermostat wire through a wall is to use the “cloths hanger trick”, this will help minimize damage and will allow you to quickly determine if the positioning of the new hole will work based on your surroundings. Always check your wire match up with the new thermostat, the common is almost always required for wifi thermostats, that includes the Honeywell Wifi Thermostat (RTH9580WF) and the NEST, the Lyrica thermostat is one of the few that does not require the common. Always follow industry standards with the wire colors, Green is for the indoor blower, Yellow is for the compressor, Red is hot from 24 Volt transformer, White energizes the heat and if you have a heat pump the orange energizes the reversing valve. Always strip your wires and make sure that they are tucked in neatly, this will help you avoid mistakes. Always save your extra wires, never cut them off.
Thanks for watching!

Thx. for the video David. So many problems can arise from the low-voltage wiring. I have done change outs where i would swear the original installer would purposely change the color to screw up any tech on a service call.

I wanted to hear more about where the common wire connection came from, you had disconnected all the wires from the old thermostat, which had one wire less then the new one, you then reconnected the new wires, two wires for stage one and two for cooling, one for fan, one for heating, one for the hot wire. Now all this wires were already there, you had to add the common wire, this was unclear to me, where did the common wire came from, directly from the secondary part of the transformer , was it capped , and it was hanging there?? I watched the video twice, but I missed the important part I think. Love your videos , by the way.

I have the same question, where he got the blue common wire from , I'm assuming was there unhook, he didn't explain the important part

can you run a wire from thermostat strait to the contactor inside the outside ac unit

How do you have a heat pump that is two stage cooling but single stage Heat ? Y1 and Y2 are both heating and cooling stages 👀am I missing something I mean the heat strips are the back up heat…..

Ok, I watched again, I noticed now the blue wire hanging there, which was the common from the system, and you hooked it up to the brown, you made the brown as the common for the thermostat.

Great video Dave. Doing same on a 2010 Ruud air handler. In video you mentioned they are brown and we'd get to the later but I don't think you had time? Inside my handler I see two C terminals on the circuit board a big plug on lower right corner of board and smaller one upper right. Must I connect at the terminal in upper right or can I cut the wire and add a screw cap to join three ends? Tried the latter on large lower right connect to no success. Thanks

I have a heat exchanger. It uses a 4 wire thermostat. I installed the 4 wire cable from the furnace to the wall location. I tacked the wire. I tacked the wire to 2x4's. Can not run a new wire so my question is can I use a wall wart ( transformer 24 vac) to get my extra power?

I installed a Ecobee3 wifi thermostat and (stupidly) did not take photos of the previous wiring first. The installation kit comes with a "Power extender kit" for folks that had a 4 wire rather than a 5 wire system starting out. I connected everything, but the outside unit does not turn on. Since I don't have a photo of the original set up, I am rather lost. Is there an easy way to figure out which which from the outside unit should be connecting to which wires at the Power Extender Kit?

Just get a 24v thermostat transformer, fish it through the wall for a clean look and done.

The real question is how do you fish a 5 wire cable through the ventilation ducts to replace a 4wire? I assume trying to tape the new wire to old in an attempt to pull it up would result in it getting snagged or stuck.
@ruffxm
@ruffxm 7 лет назад
It wasn't fished through the duct - if you look, it exits through a wire knockout. He says he fished it up the wall. Knowledgeable and experienced people can run wires almost anywhere - but it's often tricky and labor intensive, which is why he probably skipped the actual process. It looks like the house is a ranch in which case he just had to pop the wire into the attic. He specializes in HVAC and used some novice wire running methods, which is ok since the unit was in the garage and back to back with the thermostat - not a common situation. However, the point of his video was to show you the basic methodology.

Unfortunately, I think the new thermostat is way too close to the window which means it'll get sun and unnecessary heat. This means it's going to run the AC more often than it needs. The thermostat should've been located closer to the inside of the house away from windows and drafts.

So the thermostat normally pulls power from the blue wire but the blue wire is now tied to the compressor? So how is the thermostat getting power

I have a miller electric furnace and I have heat but the furnace will not shut down. It has four wires that the thermostat wires hook up to red on red green on green white on white and a gray wire witch wires do I hook up to the the gray

Why did we put a new hole in the wall when there was already a existing hole where the original thermostat was?? Like why does he want two thermostats on the same wall?

Do you turn off the gas on the furnace along with the electricity before running the wires?

Good video. You may get some poor soul electrocuted though by not advising to search for live wires before drilling through a wall. Oh and also try to get a better camera.
