Totally agree. I was going to the same guy for years and getting screwed almost every time. We'd talk before the job and then when I'd pick up the truck he would have done whatever he felt was good for him. Finally, when I authorized only a gas tank filler tube replacement and when I went to pick up the truck it had a new ($700) gas tank that was it. On a different vehicle I asked for OEM clutch parts (was willing to pay for higher price for OEM) and found out 15000 miles later when they failed he had installed the cheapest crap he could find. Good for him - bad for me. He made good money on the parts and labor and I paid good money AGAIN when I had to take it to a dealer to get OEM parts installed. Luckily, I found a guy much like Erik. Stand up guy who works reasonably. Does what he says he'll do and doesn't reach into my wallet without clearing it with me unless it's minor. And gets it done quickly. He rebuilt a Ford trans and when it later didn't function properly pulled it again and found a solution. Love it when a man stands behind his work without a hassle. I went to him because he has a good rep and now I know why. Another local guy I took a drive shaft to to get U-joints replaced actually bent one of the yokes. And obvious bend. He wouldn't take care of that so I ended up buying a new drive shaft. Guys like Mr O don't do that kind of crap. They don't work for nothing but as hard as they work I don't begrudge paying a fair price if they're honest and do good work. I'm personally getting too old to crawl around under vehicles. Tired of it.

One of the reasons that I like watching your videos is that you seem to keep it in the real world. (Showing and admitting you had a small goof or talking about not lifting the engine if it saves time and is unnecessary) You seem to have a good work ethic and like I said you work in the real world not some engineer's fantasy world(change cam bearings? Oh....3/10ths of an hour). Thanks for taking the time to produce quality.

I just had the drivers side done on my ram and they hit a water jacket drilling it out they ovaled the hole so bad they replaced the head. Now my steering angle sensor needs to be reset. And the other side is ticking. Not going to do anymore business with them I need to find a new shop. They told me I needed a head job then I said this is as straight forward as it gets I’m going to send a tow truck over to take it to another shop to get a second opinion. 45 min later I get a call saying they are going to take care of replacing the head. I’m glad they did the right thing but they tried to get me to pay for their mistake before confessing. Shops like yours are hard to find. Thank you for the videos

The worst part about your story is it's a simple fix. Those bolts do not bottom out in the bolt holes, so they are essentially loose in the hole when they break off. If they have to be drilled out, 99% of the time using drill bits with a left hand twist instead of the normal right hand twist will back the bolts right out as soon as a little heat from friction warms the bolt and the bit gets a bite in the metal.

Eric...I use a 10# fishing line to tie my manifold gasket to the manifold leaving the knots to vision. Two or three lines usually will hold everything together. After starting a few bolts in the middle of the engine, I cut the three lines and pull them out to complete the job. Works every time, saves a lot of cussing. jmo.

I lived in NY for 53 years and just moved to Florida a few years ago. I have a 2002 Ford F250 that need a manifold job. I can see 2 bolts on each side that are rusted, missing nuts. Got a mechanic down here but when we discussed the job, he was hesitant. Priced the job at the Ford dealer and it's not that bad. The technique is the key. I'll make the reach that the Ford Mechanics working on 250's know their craft well enough to get it done. That said if I still lived in NY, I 'd drive to see Erik, take a room at a hotel and wait for the truck to be finished. Great Video, always enjoy a job well done.

No need to apologize, we are very lucky that you share your knowledge and wisdom with us. Integrity..honor....is why you are so busy, you stand behind your work and treat your customers fairly and honestly, unlike some other shops who do what THEY want and gouge customers wallets. Happened to me once, `87 Laser XE Turbo.big 2.2 w/turbo....3 head bolts snapped while taking head off for head gasket replacement. I authorized broken stud removal ONLY..all parts in car with Felpro gasket set. Guy rebuilt top end then hit me with a $400.00 bill to get my car back. Gasket set still in box. Had to call state inspection office, report the abuse to teach this ripoff artist a lesson. Turns out there were enough complaints for them to set up a car with known problems and have him repair it. He did the same to the inspector`s car. They immediately shut the crook down, hefty fines. Blacklisted and stripped him of all credentials. Shop was empty within a week due to his lack of morals. Few weeks later I got a check in the mail from the state. He screwed himself out of business. Nice job on the manifolds. God Bless you and your family Sir. Much respect from this old backyard mechanic.

Hi Eric, one of the manifold gasket holes has tiny tabs to screw a bolt thru a couple turns and mount to block. This hole in gasket with tiny tabs is inline with the manifold hole that is a slotted hole so you can slide the manifold down with gasket in place. Love the vids and your accolades for the Mrs.

Hey Mark, I'm not able to reply to you comment but this one the parts cost from Dodge was $191.00 and depending how the job goes you'd be looking at 4 to 6 hours labor I would imagine. Book time on manifolds with no broken bolts is 3.3 hours

Actually, the dealer was the one place where most torque wrenches never saw daylight. Just not enough time to make money and worry about torque. The only exception seemed to be headgaskets, everything else was the ol clicking elbow. Nice vids, nice work. Good trick with the welder also.

I called a local Dodge Dealer, the service department will do the repair, even with broken bolts. The starting price for the job is $2,000.00, if any of the manifold bolts are broken, the price could exceed $3800.00...............Talk about RIP OFF!

Just did the same on my 01 Ram.Sadly the inner liners are steel and welded to the fender so had to do from above. Had to weld some nuts on and for some of them I used the Lisle stud remover. U hammer them on.Works quite well. Best tool is patience. P.S. There wasn't a trace of gasket left on either side. Could explain the misfire I've been getting.

This explains Mr O's distain toward Chrysler. When buying a car, look at what the good mechanics drive. I believe Eric drives a Honda Ridgeline. Nuff said... 😎

Nice videos Eric! You need a set of drill bits with a left hand twist instead of the normal right handed ones for jobs like this. If for some reason you do end up having to drill those bolts out, using a left handed bit will spin a broken bolt right out once the bolt has heated up a bit from the drilling operation and then bites into the metal. Those bolts aren't bottomed out in the holes when tight, so when the bolt breaks like those in the video did, what's left in the hole is essentially loose in the hole. Drilling with a left handed bit "should" theoretically spin it right out once the bit gets a bite in the metal. Just an idea for you to try in the future if needed, I know for sure that it works because I do it sometimes at work.

I had the same thought. I do feel welding on a nut is possibly a better option, but if no welder is available?...
@ralfie8801
@ralfie8801 4 года назад
gfd1166 It could be, and I've done that, but what happens when the end of the broken bolt has three threads of the bolt hole showing above the bolt?
@gfd1166
@gfd1166 4 года назад
@@ralfie8801, In that case, I'd go with the reverse-twist drill bit.
@ralfie8801
@ralfie8801 4 года назад
gfd1166 Sometimes a regular drill bit works too, I've drilled them to use an extractor and had the bolt come loose and screw in the hole until it bottomed out as the drill bit broke through the end of the bolt. If, and once that happens, the bolt usually comes right out with an extractor. The reason for the left hand bit is to bypass the extractor portion of the process.

@@ralfie8801 Yup. Just another option... more tools in the tool box.

My vocational school teacher told me a trick with torqing spark plugs to around 15ft lbs. Use a 3/8 ratchet with one hand and with ur hand over the head of the ratchet. About the most torque u can apply is 15 to maybe 20ft lbs depending on ur size. So you could probably use that method on these bolts. Hopefully I explained it well wto understand through text. Lol

Sometimes using common sense makes sense. :) Great job and I'm sure the customer appreciated the extra time (= money) not being spent on jacking the engine.

Great job! I've watched a lot of these hemi tick/broken manifold bolt videos. The mechanic is always relieved when it is the latter and not the former but the job you did was a huge one. The bolts seem to break more on the trucks than the cars equipped with the hemi 5.7. I have a 2015 Chrysler 300 C with the 5.7 hemi. I hope this never happens to me. BTW, is the Ram owner going to give the salt on his truck back to the State of New York?

Wondered the same thing. I have to at least clean the area I'm going to be working on, so I can see and not be fighting with dirt. But I'm not a mechanic, and this was probably winter anyway.

In my area the average Hemi owner only cares about his truck being loud. I probably would have been trying to sell him on shorty headers since the manifold have to come out anyway lol

Auto parts stores sell a copper spray gasket film that is a huge help holding hard to get to gaskets in the right place while you slide your part in place
