I usually do not thumbs up and comment on videos. This was very informative and helpful. I am about to add Hardie to an extension to the house and you were the first video to explain alternatives to mounting the bottom and why or when you would change that based in climate and conditions. Also you were the first out of many videos to explain nailing in depth to include type of nails to use. Cleared up a lot off questions I had. Thank you sir😊

I think the reason you would do the starter strip is for a proper drip edge at the bottom. Secondary is to match the kick out.
@TKCL
@TKCL 8 месяцев назад
This hangs below the sheathing and the backside is painted. I'm not concerned about the final drip, but I see what you mean.

8 1/4 minus 1 1/4 overlap is a 7” reveal not 6. It’s helpful to have a story pole or be proficient with a tape when staring your first course on both sides of a wide opening like a garage door. I’ve installed this on numerous homes and my personal preference is to have a 5/4x8” starter at the bottom with x flashing. Looks good
@TKCL
@TKCL 6 месяцев назад
They offer this in three different sizes. Mine is 7 1/4 overall which is the most common size sold at the big box stores.
@leestebbins5051
@leestebbins5051 5 месяцев назад
Were you running a 7 1/4” blade on a 10” miter saw. I’m ready to do some siding and would rather use a chop saw but haven’t seen a 10” siding blade. Also, a too late tip, but since you were flexible on your start level, use the course over the door trim to drive your start level. No more cutout above the door and a clean line all the way across the top.
@TKCL

Nope, I run the correct size blades on all my saws.

HELP! Great video! My husband and I have built a cute shed and are trying to install decorative scalloped shaped fiber cement under the gable. Does this require a starter strip first so you don’t see the paper wrap? Does it matter where you start? Do you only nail at the top? We are using shears to cut. The angle cuts are more challenging and the pieces appear brittle. Hope you can help! Thank you 😊
@TKCL
@TKCL Год назад
You only nail the top so the overlapping piece covers the nails. You overlap the pieces by an inch and a quarter, they make special gauges to make this process easy. You always start at the bottom and work up. The starter strip is so the bottom piece has the flare or kick out to match all of the other pieces that you'll install. I haven't found the starter strip to be critical.

Andrew,will termites & carpenter bees go after the Hardie siding?
@TKCL
@TKCL Год назад
Negative, nothing eats that stuff. That's why homeowners insurance usually offers a discount of you use it.
@h2s142
@h2s142 4 месяца назад
We aren’t concerned about termites eating siding but siding providing a pathway to the framing. Its important to properly seal your house wrap to the foundation.

It's my understanding it hasn't contained asbestos since the mid 80s.
