Flat-lock soldered copper roofing is excellent on low-slope roofs where a long-lasting, durable roof is desired. Check the Slate Roof Warehouse for tools, materials and supplies! Filmed by Joseph Jenkins, author of the Slate Roof Bible, 3rd edition (www.slateroofwarehouse.com/Sl....

I must say I love watching you guys videos. I catch myself binge watching every time I just need to look something up. I've met you before Joe, bought some used slates at the warehouse years back. Thank you for sharing all these tips. I have utilized them many times.

Iron should be at the other side, so you sweat the joint, now you just laying solder on the pans, also watch the temp for proper soldering.

You always hold the iron on the thick edge. You don't need to pre tin it because you can see how filthy the pre tin gets. Just draw it in with relatively high heat to sweat it. Then you have to go over it with a bridge, just like a welding braid unless you are down South where the ice won't tear it apart. Use the high temp ice guard to keep it water tight while your working on copper. Use the rosin paper on top of it anyway to prevent hot copper from sticking to high temp. Also use the ring shank copper nails.

You absolutely need to pretin. Do a comparison on a sample piece. It makes an obvious difference if you cut open the joint and inspect it. There was a study done not long ago where they test pretinned VS non-pretinned. Without pretinning the joints failed much sooner under testing.

I like using the flat irons so you can just walk it and hear it sweat

does the heat from the process ever cause the red paper to burn? i met a pittsburgh roofer who only uses high temp ice guard instead of the paper, but it seems to me that the copper might stick to the ice guard. i am not yet experienced with this but i hope to learn the proper and safe procedures. thanks, chuck.

No, the iron should not heat the copper enough to burn paper under it. You don't want tar or bitumen products directly under copper or they will heat up and stick to it, which stops it from moving like it should when the weather changes.

What ounce copper do you use for the cleats? Looks like 16?
@jcjenkins01
@jcjenkins01 4 года назад
We use 20-ounce half-hard copper for the pans, and the same material for the cleats.

Im suprised how they kept it squared after they didnt cut a slit where the clips goes. Id hammer it down too if they can get away with it. Isnt copper return to its original shape. Id rather see the whole thing hammered down tight than a bunch of shoe mark here and there

Your soldering skills suck, you should know better. You always draw the solder into the seam. At 3:07 miter needs help. Copper pop rivets at least and the short leg also. Have you done any Onion roofs? I'd like to see them.
