Andrew I am happy you got to use the "Nail Punch", I have a few more things I will be sending you, some Rain and Wind tomorrow to start with, we are looking at having the "eye" o f the storm here tomorrow, looks like the path is Cedar Key, Cross City and Lake city, right now at Cat 1, slow moving which means a lot of rain. I agree with others it is your house you build it your way and on your time line. many see but still may not understand you are a one man show, and I said it before my hats off for you for doing so much by yourself, I have done a lot of building by myself also, and I still enjoy doing so but at 71 you can't do it all anymore. A lot of hard work and some great ingenuity and a new tool to try out but I know that you will absolutely love the extra living/office space and a great use for some the the giant space you have upstairs. My dad would take a 16d nail, set it and WHAM it was in. For me, I'll take a power nailer any day. haha! I still occasionally use his old hand saws though. It brings back good memories. You're a good man. Working smart. (A little candle wax can help those boards slide in a little smoother, too!) ;)

It's easy to sit back and watch how someone could have done something differently or miss things just as easily as it is to step back and notice you could have done it differently, easier or whatever it may be, especially when you're doing something of this magnitude as much as you can by yourself. Punch nailer wow, that's one I've never seen either great tool. I like the way you learned to skin that cat ratcheting those 2x6 through the cutouts 🤔 smart!
Lets be realistic the thing that God made is one day after another. And you live in a warm area and things will get done and life is also about enjoying the outdoors. You are doing the right thing.
I liked how you solved it. I may have gone with a cheap Harbor Freight winch and pulled on the other end of the board with the cable running through your cutouts. Come along worked too.
Another trick with using a sledgehammer on wood is to take a big heavy wet log and drill a hole in it and put a handle in it and use that as your sledgehammer and being wet wood it’s going to be tougher and heavy but it’s not gonna break the wood you’re hammering on. Of course if you did a little more welding you could put a hydraulic ram on there or not hammer at all. Lol I love that you just make your own tools and figure this stuff out. When I work construction I do this stuff and everybody thought I was crazy and the guy I worked with was brilliant at doing this kind of stuff and they would sit around all day scratching their heads and we come in and figure it out. Lol. Second set of hands would’ve really been useful I bet but you’re getting it done. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

If I lived next-door to you I’d be over there every day helping you with this, stuff like this is just fun. Now once you start drywalling and painting, I’ll be busy that day because that is boring tedious work but framing and building structures, that’s just good fun.

Hey you should spray foam under the new room. It will do a couple of things for you. 1 it will deaden the noise and 2 it will lock all the wood together. Wish I would have done that to my basement.

I heard you mention you had some mold on some of the lumber.Whatever you do don't use bleach to try to kill the mold. Bleach actually encourages mold growth on porous surfaces such as wood . Distilled white vinegar works very well to kill black mold on lumber.

Last spring I installed a planter using PT spruce 6x6. Locally I paid $51 CAD per 12' stick. Mid summer I sourced unplained 6x6 12' cedar sticks at $23 CAD each direct from a small commercial mill employing 30 to 50ppl. The mill is about 20 miles from my city. They are producing raw cuts for the European market based in Atlantic Canada because of Canada's freetrade with UK and Europe. Btw they are a Texas owned company. For setting those 8" sticks (beams) I'd recommend using an SDS+ or MAX to push those in instead of pounding with a mull as it should push them without deformation!
So wishing you had got a dead blow hammer for driving those new joists into place. Then I saw you bust out the come along. Still gonna recommend a Deadblow hammer for the toolbox.
After notching the blocking above the kitchen, why didn't you just push up the 2x8 straight up into the notched blocking, and then slide it over the three or so inches into place?
Keep in mind that the board was almost 5 inches longer than the clear span opening. With the osb nailed down, there was no way to put the board straight up. It would have been too short to sit over the center wall and over the exterior 2x6 wall top plates.
Woot! Fun fun, grab the saws all and get it on. 🙌🏼 Ugh. Sledgehammers gonna kill you, go get one of the good crowbars with a nail remover on the end I don’t get the cheap Harbor Freight ones because they bend it will save you a ton of headaches. :/ And I can tell you from experience fixing a poorly built floor in a 24 x 44 edition at my old house, don’t kill yourself trying to save every piece of cross bracing. If you cut it too short you can always throw some scrap in there and make it again and was 12 inches on center dressing the cross bracing isn’t nearly as important. It would be easy to drive yourself crazy trying to get the perfect spacing on every existing piece of cross bracing if it’s difficult especially if it’s next to a wall in a tight area, just whack out a big chunk get the truss in there and throw a new piece of blocking in in the old one being there is it gonna really hurt anything. It’s nice to have them all even but you’ve already got everything nailed in so you’re blocking is really just to keep the trusses from twisting it doesn’t really need to be in the exact same spot. If you put it all on the deck side of the house you’ll know where to nail by moving an inch and 3/4 over from where the other nails are. I know that will kill your OCD but I spent hours upon hours trying to get things perfect and get myself a ton of headaches in a little bit of grip and rip could’ve made that twice as easy. Lol. Seen enough videos to know that you’re going to do it perfectly anyway but I thought I’d throw that out there anyway. 😂😂 Keep the handsaw because you can use them all the time but salsa look at those little ends out pretty easily. Get a smaller one that’s not as heavy though. I’ve used a big huge powerful Milwaukee and just lifting it kills your arms after a while. Lol. Honestly it sits in a box and I never use it or use my $14 smaller Harbor Freight one. 😂 I would zip through there with the Skil saw and just get all the main cuts made then go through there with a saws all just knock out that last little bit. Even one of those oscillating saw’s might be easier. Lol. I wish I was your neighbor this stuff is so much fun to me. 😂😂
@@TKCL I wish I could, I always make everything 100 times harder than it needs to be and I know better but I guess I just have a weak brain and get the best of me. I can’t even build a workbench without making it strong enough to park a suburban on. Lol
Before you nail it you can just hit it from the side with some construction adhesive and still get a pretty good bit in there. When I was working for Roofer we watched a bunch of videos where they did the strength differences between glued and unglued roof sheeting. I love glue, you almost don’t even need nails or screws. It’s a huge pain and messy though. Lol. I didn’t catch the staggering issue. That definitely happens when you get tired. You’ll be fine though with all that cross bracing.
I would like to suggest now that when you frame the walls of the loft that you put a door from that to the attic. If you have that you will never use that pull down ladder.
You made those joist additions look much easier than I thought they would be! Really looking good! Will you be able to raise the cross support on the truss in your office any?
Really nice job, I have to be honest I have never seen them let some one butt the joist together like that. It may be a pole barn thing but if those outside walls fall out in a storm there is not much for the centers to rest on. up here we need to overlap at center ( load wall) by 24". Just curious? PS, look at Ryobi they make a job site fan that goes on top of a 5 gallon bucket with a mister just like your big fan.. You 3 stay safe, God bless.

I might not have said it clearly, but that's what I am doing. Another layer of 1/2 inch glued and nailed to the existing. He understood that it would have been a nightmare to rip up what I have.
I commented before I finished the video. Not trying to come off like I'm telling u what to do....I know how some people can do that in these videos. They make a mold inhibiting spray you can spray out of an airless sprayer and coat all the wood. I do it on every house I build because of the humidity and moisture down here. Average house size I build is 3 stories and 10,000 sq. Ft. So they take about 8 months or so to get dried in. The spray works amazingly.
I don’t see you using hearing protection. Do the wear buds work to Block it? I would be interested in that. Advice from my father, protect your hearing. You want to be able to BS with your friends when your old. Old farmer hearing is bad. PS I like your welder fold up table. Gonna have to add that to mine. Punch nailer is new to me…very cool.
Those ear buds make a huge difference and I feel safe using them with most loud tools. Something extremely loud like firearms, I'll still use traditional ear plugs or muffs.

We had a fully designed 1 1/2 story traditional home designed and a contract signed with a builder before this. Things went south quickly with covid, the banks, building materials and the overall cost of the build kept being changed. It didn't feel right so we canceled and decided to go this route. It was a small version of what we are building now, but way more custom.
Don't remember exactly, want to say 14'8". We were right on the edge of what's allowed for southern pine, 15'3 is max allowed before stepping up to the next size.
