Great video. Been contemplating getting this for my rst. I do have bose but just doesn’t feel like enough bass like my charger rt with beats has. I want to keep factory look and my warranty so u made it easy with video.
Thanks for posting this. Really helped me to know what I want done. I bought this set up for my Trailboss. Even bought the volume knob from your link you commented. I couldn’t find the “headphone jack” on that black amp for the sub volume control till I popped out that little rubber boot at the bottom. This is gonna be installed Monday. I think it’s gonna be exactly the upgrade I want. Thanks!!!
@@phil_hazzy I’m excited. I didn’t know my stereo was sub par til my wife got a Toyota Highlander with a JBL system in it. This seemed like a nice fix. Can’t wait.
Thanks for this video! Literally picked up my AT4 Diesel yesterday and started looking up audio options, couldn't figure out for sure what the second amp was for, glad to hear confirmation it's for the front speakers and that it makes a difference! Got it ordered on GMC accessories, it gave me the option for installation for $112 which seems really low so we'll see.
@@phil_hazzy Absolutely! So one question, does the subwoofer get it's audio signal from the additional amp for the front speakers? If it does maybe it has a crossover in that amp/dsp? Was worried about just adding a sub without a crossover. Also are there any controls/dipswitches on the amps for crossover or other options?
@@caleb30 I believe it gets it's signal direct not from the second amp. There are dipswitches on the sub amp but I don't remember how many there are. I followed somebody else's advice when I set them and haven't touched them since.
Thanks for the video. I just bought this kit. Have not installed it yet. Seems like the worst part is removing the back seat and running the wires through the firewall.
I posted a second video of tips and tricks when I did it the second time. It'll help out! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0vxxsY9MbJA.html
Where would I find the wiring harness? Bought the subwoofer used, I think from the power cable it got cut off going to the battery. But I am not 100% sure. Any ideas where I can view/buy what wiring I will need?
Great video and super helpful. Im getting ready to install this on my 2021 Chevy 2500. Did this require any dealer codes? Or was it just hook up and go? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the video, will try this on my my Chevy Trail Boss Single Cab.. but i was just wondering where you mount the subwoofer behind or under seats ?
Great video Phil, thanks so much for sharing. I have the diesel too and had no clue how I was going to get around the battery till I saw this video. Question for you, I picked up the kicker sub control knob, did you run the wire up the left side of the truck and up under the dash? Guessing it's a good idea to put it on opposite side of the power.
I did run it under the driver side. I put the knob fairly close to the hood release. You'll see there's a small flat spot where it will fit nicely. It's out of the way but within easy reach!
@@chippy126 I got it from best buy. I think Amazon might have it too. Somebody else asked the question and I posted a link in that thread so you might be able to find it there. As for how hard, it'll be the easiest thing you ever do. You just plug it in. No extra wiring needed!
Hi Phil, Thanks for the video. I have a JL amp and JL sub for under the back seat. I am going to run 8 guage positive to the back from the battery. I have one remote port on my JL amp. Where should I run the remote wire? To the grey or black plug? I have a 21 gmc crew.
That's a good question to which I do not have an answer. I followed the schematics GM provided for my kit. You may want to consult your local stereo shop.
I know that this system was designed specifically for the 5th gen. I believe that Kicker also has one for your gen truck. I can say that the Bose system is quite lacking compared to this one! I'd point you to www.shopchevyparts.com and do a search for one that might work for your truck. Of all the sites I've been to, they are consistently better on prices!
Thanks for the video definitely helped with the install. Only question is in the front where you connect the 2 wires to the green wire did yours have an additional connection on the wire that is not used?
@@phil_hazzy not sure if we are taking about the same thing. On the new wire for the amp there is a plug on the end with the 2 wires that connect to the green one. Mine has one and no instruction for anything to plug in it and nothing I can see to plug in it.
@@JoshFox87 Hey Josh. It's been a while since I did this and you're right, I was talking about another installation. For this one, I remember what you're talking about. I don't remember what that plug was for but it isn't used in this installation as I recall. I remember trying to figure it out myself and I believe I called Kicker to ask and was told it's not used. Seemed weird that they would include it then but it wasn't used. After almost 2 years, it still sounds great and I've never regretted the install!
Did you install the GM kicker set? What was the GM part number? We have the 2021 Elevation and wanted to upgrade the speakers to Infinity Kappas and add an amp/sub.
19417166 was the part number and it is the GM kicker kit. You'd be surprised how well the stock speakers sound with the second amp installed. You'll want the kicker knob to control the sub output though. Have fun!
@@phil_hazzy that's good to know and I think exactly what we need to increase the output of the new Infinity speakers we bought. Do you have specs on the kit? The GM site is lacking info. I really appreciate your feedback!
I added this kit. The sub sounds great but I can't tell any different at all in the front speakers. Is there any adjustments needed on the amp for the speakers? I had it installed at dealership.
If you can't hear a difference in the front speakers, pull the backseat to see if the second amp was installed. As a whole, there's a huge difference from stock.
@@phil_hazzy thanks for the reply! I checked the amp it is installed and functioning because I can connect and change the eq on the Kicker app. I think I may just need to adjust the eq settings in the truck more.
Did you feel like the sound from the front speakers almost disappeared? Like you lost full range? I think the amp processes alot of the low end, bass, out of the speakers and sends it all to the subwoofer but I may be wrong.
I have a 2021 Silverado and am looking at getting this kit. I am also looking at upgrading the speakers while I'm at it. Do you have specifics on the Amp that powers the speakers? RMS and Ohm rating? Maybe a model number of the Amp itself? Any help is much appreciated.
Hey Mike! I couldn't find anything out other than it's a 200 watt amp with DSP. It's pretty basic as far as functionality but does a great job of being factory integrated for a nearly plug and play amp. There are other choices out there but those may require a bit more to get installed. FWIW, I upgraded the rest of the speakers also with Kickers, not because they're the best but wanted to stay with one brand and they sound good. One tip would be that Amazon (and I'm sure other retailers) sell kits to quickly install door speakers in the factory locations. I repurposed the original ones by cutting out the factory speakers and modifying them to accept the new speakers.
@@phil_hazzy Thanks for the information. I reached out to Kicker to see if they can provide me more specs. What kicker speakers did you install in the rest of the truck?
@@phil_hazzy I just heard back from Tech Support @ Kicker and below is what they said for anyone looking for this information. "The amplifier has 4 channels of output and produces 50 watts RMS per channel at 4 ohms. I don’t recommend replacing the factory speakers with aftermarket speakers, as the amplifier’s DSP has an EQ file loaded that has been optimized to sound best with the factory speakers. If you replace them with aftermarket speakers, you will be adding 4 extra tweeters to the system and the system will likely sound extremely bright. This DSP is not adjustable, so the only compensation would be through the factory head unit using the treble adjustment." I still plan on upgrading the factory speakers. I see no harm in doing so.
@@phil_hazzy Well I’m doing some research before I buy/install the system and was wondering if you were able to use the app. Once I have everything installed I’ll give it a try and update you.
I'm curious if anyone has done this upgrade, and then further upgraded the front door speakers and the tweeters? It would seem with the added power that might work well, assuming the proper speaker selection (ohms, efficiency). even with DSP I would think that might provide additional improvements. Also, hoping my dealer can handle the install with a new truck. They say they have done some of the subwoofers, but no word on the additional amp yet.
This is a great video ,!! I appreciate you sharing this with us ! I do have a question for you . Was this on a non Bose system, and does your rig also have a factory sub? Appreciate to response . Thank you
Hey there! I appreciate the comments! Always trying to make something people might find of value. The factory system in my truck was non Bose and did not have a factory sub. After the install, I would challenge anybody with a Bose stereo to listen to mine and convince me theirs is better!
I have the $699.00 version with a 2021 Sierra 1500 Denali. The dealer installed. The idea was to get some bass out of the rear speakers, which have none and sound like junk. But the sub has too much punch for me. Do you know if there is a way to control the bass. Thanks for any response.
Yup. Get the Kicker volume knob. Plugs right in and you can control the volume. I mounted the knob by the hood release. Best $30 you'll spend! www.bestbuy.com/site/kicker-remote-black/6333351.p?skuId=6333351&ref=212&loc=1&extStoreId=1027
What is the difference with the $699 kit and the one Phil uses? I noticed his has an additional amp? I thought the $699 kit had the amp included what is the amp that goes behind the backseats for?
@@teamfreddy5945 one is for trucks with factory Bose speakers (the cheaper one because it does not come with the second amp). The more expensive system is for trucks with non Bose speakers.
I can't say for sure. It might be worth a look behind the backseat on the wall to see if an amp is already there. If there isn't one, I'd say it might work!
I just purchased this same kit, same part number 19417166 for my 2021 Silverado 2500. The instructions caj for splicing into the green wire with black stripe in the harness with the black plug just as you did in the video. Do you know what this wire is for? I can only assume that it is a remote turn on signal for the amps. It obviously cant be audio signal because its only 1 wire. I believe the audio signal comes from the grey connector. Do you know what the green wire is for and why it need to be spliced into? I couldn't find a wiring diagram for that black plug.
Phil, what was your trick to getting the amp power wires thru the firewall? I found that tube you mentioned and cut the end off of it but I cant get my fish tape thru it.
@@Volfan812 I didn't use fish tape but that's a good idea. I did the install during a hot Texas summer day so I was sweating a bit trying to get it through. Eventually I enlisted a very petite young lady to push them through while I was inside with a flashlight under the dash. You'll easily see them once they're in. Seeing me sweating profusely doesn't make for good videos so I passed on including that.
I shoved a long screwdriver in there as far as I could then went back into the cab under the dash but still couldn't see where the screwdriver came thru. Any chance you could take a pic of where they come thru at and email me?
My truck is a 2021 Silverado 2500HD with the duramax. I assume the cabs are the same. If you can get a pic and email it my email is gardner.scott@rocketmail.com. I've given up for the day. It's getting too cold out. Hopefully I can finish it up tomorrow.
Check out my other video on this. I had the same issue and show the solution. Adding resistors cures it! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0vxxsY9MbJA.html
@@phil_hazzy The signal from the head unit that is sent to that amp; Is it digital? (If you wanted to bi-amp your front speakers, is it easy to access everything? If you re:used the factory amp, can you intercept the signal, and run it through a miniDSP?
@@andyh8239 the amp included in that kit does have a dsp in it. The sound is quite a step up over factory. That said, I don't know the specifics of how the signal is sent. When you're tapping into the wire loom, I'm not sure which signals are being tapped.
@@andyh8239 there are 2 kits available. One has just the amp on the sub and the other has that and an extra one for the stock speakers. My video and kit is the one with 2 amps. The second amp overrides the one in the head unit.
Sadly after all of the research, dealer went to install and found that it wasn't actually compatible with my AT4. Putting in the year, model, engine into the GMC accessories show it as compatible but if you actually put in the VIN it guess it turns out there's something different. The kit that doesn't include the second amp fits I guess but I don't think I'll be happy without doing something to the front speakers.
@@phil_hazzy Even if I put in the vin to the accessories website it doesn’t show that is a compatible option. Where if I put in the model it says it’s good. So I’m inclined to believe them maybe.
@@davidh5579 I'd recommend you reach out to Kicker directly. They're super easy to deal with and make sure you get the right setup! www.kicker.com/contact-us (405) 624-8510
Couldn't be happier! And it was a lot of work but I enjoy tinkering. I was able to get it done in an afternoon. Probably could have been a lot quicker if I wasn't videoing. The sound difference though is incredible!
@@chippy126 I am the same way when it comes to rattles and squeaks! The only advice would be when running the harnesses through the channels is to make sure they're well secured. If you've done anything like this before, you'll be aware of that. Yes, mine was the $1200 kit.
@@phil_hazzy does that amp help the rear door speakers? I didn't see the adjustment knob. Do you install that after the fact? I have a 2020 gmc Denali dually.
@@chippy126 Yes, the secondary amp works with and improves all of the stock speakers including the ones in the rear door. I purchased the knob after I completed the install. If you don't, it's ridiculous is the best way to say it. The knob simply plugs into the amp on the subwoofer and looks like a headphone jack. That's it. That's all there is to that installation. Then it's just figuring out where you want the knob. I ran the wire for it similar to the harnesses on the other side in the door sills and mounted the actual knob by the hood release. You'll see a small flat spot on the lower side of the dash where it fits perfectly. Then it's easy to reach but still out of the way when you're getting in and out of the truck!
One more question if you don’t mind. If you turn the bass down on the head unit so little bass comes through the speakers, does this affect the subwoofer level? Or is the bass level for the subwoofer only controlled on the amp?
@@dmccarthy413 Never hesitate to ask questions! When I installed it, no matter how low I turned the bass down on the head unit, the subwoofer was overpowering. Also, when you turn the bass down that low, the sound was diminished on the rest of the speakers. The bass control knob from Kicker was the best $29 dollar investment on top of this system and is literally plug and play. It allows you to adjust the volume of only the subwoofer but still maintain the tone for the rest of the speakers. I have songs that have too much bass so I'll turn the volume on only the sub down and still enjoy the music and vice versa.
@@Volfan812 You can purchase a system that just has the one amp on the subwoofer. The 2 amp system leaves one on the sub but the other powers the stock speakers. I can say that the 2 amp system sounds great!
@@phil_hazzy awesome. Thank you. I have a 2021 Silevrado 2500HD on order. My current 2015 has a large sub box with 2 JL Audio 10" subs, all JL Audio door speakers and Kicker amps. I'm not trying to go that elaborate with the new truck. Plus I want to retain some of my under seat storage. This sounds like the way to go.
lol there was no need to remove the seats. That was a bunch of wasted time. It's molded to fit perfectly, no need to remove seats to "get the most space" lol
