On today's episode, we fix everything wrong with our 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner project by reinstalling the factory intake manifold and a set of 340 carburetors. As always seems to be the case with this car, we were short on time, so I didn't have a chance to go into technical details on the particulars of this setup, or do anything else on the car... like brakes... There's always next time. ‪@rocketresto‬

Love all years of the Road Runner. For a short time owned a 69 Coronet R/T. 440 auto. Other than a Holley double pumper and Hooker headers it was stock, including points ignition. Back in the early 90's I would blow through a full tank of gas in under an hour. Always regretted selling it back to my brother.

A happy day to see your car reunited with its 6 Bbl induction system, so many old cars were switched to 4 barrels once the original systems got old cranky.

Mine has aluminum heads and 484 cam. 7 qt. pan and Melling high volume pump. I also put a Hemi fuel pump on it. It fires right up and I also took the headers off and put the stock manifolds on it. We pulled the six pack and then figured out the real problem, but never tried it again. It sat on the shelf in his living room for years, until he sold it… for like $1700? With no air cleaner. And that was some years ago. They haven’t gotten cheaper. I really want one to play with myself, but I don’t know how I’ll pull that off any time soon.

Picture it... 1977. I was 17 and I saw a beautiful '70 Road Runner V-code 440-6 bbl 4-speed at a car show. A few months later it was sitting in a driveway in my neighborhood. WTF??? Engine gone! Tranny gone! Dana gone! Seats gone! I knocked on the door and offered $30 for the air-grabber hood. They told me I could have the whole car for $35, so I bought it. I already had a 383 engine, 4-speed and 8 3/4 reared with 3.55 sure-grip. I drove it daily for a year and sold it for $400.(sigh) My next Mopar was a mint '66 Hemi Satellite for $1800. Hemi was gone! 4-speed and Dana was gone! I installed a 440 6 bbl, a 4-speed and 8 3/4 with 4.30 sure-grip. Drove it to the Street Machine Nationals in Indianapolis from Buffalo, NY. I did a bunch of burn-outs, and broke an axle. I made it back home at 45 mph, and all 5 studs broke off of the other axle as I pulled into my parent's driveway! YIKES! I sure do miss the old days, and the old prices! 64 years old, and still enjoying old Mopars!
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Год назад
Wow… man, a hemi Satellite just has to be one of the coolest cars ever. Obviously the Roadrunner is cool too. Haha. I missed out on the best times. When I started in the hobby I could go grab a running A body for $300-900, and I did - often. So much of the fun was in how affordable they were. There weren’t real muscle cars around, but there were plenty of A bodies to drag home. Now I make more money, but the cars usually cost much, much more and it doesn’t quite even out. Oh well. I’ve still got my fair share, and am still having my kind of fun whenever possible.

As for the 6 barrel and 6 pac some models did say 6pac so your not wrong. I believe it's challengers that sported 6 pac distinction on the 340 ta. But what do I know😊 as for favorites for me 70 charger and 67 coronet then 70 gtx or roadrunner. So my 72 roadrunner gets honorable mention because I have had it for 43yrs. Is it a favorite not so much but it's still cool. Bucket list involves 70 440 6pac 4spd and a 69 rt with the same. And as long as I am dreaming a trip to the Bahamas to be a pirate for a day. Oh, I actually thought I did that. The three matching nipples on the passenger side of the carbs all get connected together with lines and a T. The extra upper nipple on the center carb is vacuum advance. The large lower nipple on the base plate of the center carb gets a long line that wraps around to the PCV valve. Done! I apologize for this video not being information rich on the six pack setup. I plan to do this, it just didn’t work out on the day we filmed this. It’s mostly just for whatever entertainment the glory of seeing the setup back on the car might offer, as many people asked about it.

Bought me a small block six barrel setup 3 or 4 years ago, and a year or two later bought me a big block six barrel intake. Are the carbs interchangeable?
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Год назад
Short answer, yes. These are actually 340 carbs, so as you can see they do fit and run. The center carb is technically different. The choke attachment arm is at a slightly different angle so that doesn’t work, and I believe the correct 440 center carb has a higher CFM rating. If you don’t need that small block intake, I’d love to help you with that 😁 although I probably can’t afford it… let alone carbs… anyway.

Doesn’t matter much nowadays, but I’d be bummed if my new… 3-2bbl Mopar showed up with a cast iron intake lol. The story I heard in the eighties on the cast iron intake was that Edelbrock couldn’t keep up with production of aluminum manifolds, and Chrysler had to cast their own to finish production. Dunno if that’s true, but it’s hard for me to believe that Edelbrock… EDELBROCK, couldn’t keep up? Wtf, we’re not talking GM or Ford that built a hundred thousand muscle cars a year here lol!
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Год назад
Rooster says Edelbrock wanted their name on the aluminum manifolds and Chrysler didn’t. Personally, I am pretty sure the real answer, as usual, is money. I’m guessing they saved a good few bucks per manifold by casting them in house out of iron - or they wouldn’t have done that.
@rong4189
@rong4189 Год назад

Question on my 68 bee seems everything works on my dash but the dash lights .what could be my issue to start tracking this problem ?
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Год назад
Dash light fader is a very common problem - especially in cars that have been sitting unused. On many models it’s built into the headlight switch. On 68-70 B bodies, it’s that separate dash light fader that also turns on the dome light. I just start rolling the fader up and down, and often they will magically start working again. The fader could definitely be bad or broken internally to the point that that won’t ever work, but I’ve had pretty good luck. There is also a dash light fuse worth checking. Power comes out of the headlight switch, goes through the fader, then to the fuse, then back to the lights. You could always try jumping power to the fuse to check the lights themselves. A volt meter could also be used to check all of these components if you don’t have any luck.

Just a curious question...were those engines put into the cars in a sequentially ordered number at all or was it just kind of grab one-off the shelf and put it in? Me and my twin brother drive 2 trucks that are also twins and they are simultaneously serial numbered but the engines are several 100 apart. I know that's a big difference between a cat engine and mopars but I was just curious. In our 2 kenworths the younger truck actually has the older engine.
@joshuajesch7154
@joshuajesch7154 Год назад
The trucks chassis numbers are sequential i mean. Again...ND farm boy grammar. Lol.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Год назад
Haha. I catch your drift. I don’t know at what point in the build process which engine was chosen for which car, but I really don’t think it was sequential. Thing is, there is no separate ID number on the engines, so we have no way of knowing what was built when. But I know the casting date can vary quite a bit, so that should give us a good indication that they weren’t coming out in any particular order. I’m guessing engines were churned out in several different series lines, then grabbed from there as a particular car headed down the line. I’m really curious about how the assembly line worked but I don’t know much about that - yet.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage Год назад
Ok, I randomly just learned that this isn’t correct. There actually is a assembly number as well that reveals the date it was assembled and what number engine it was that day. I still don’t know that they ended up into cars in any particular order. I really doubt it.

Your coil is not getting regular ignition one power. The common cause of that symptom is ballast resistor failure, and it’s pretty safe money to just replace that for $6 or whatever they cost now. You could also do some detective work, and check for power at both sides of the ballast resistor with the key in the run position. If you have 12v on one said and 0v on the other, the resistor is bad. If you have no power on either side of the resistor, you’ll want to check the main ignition switch connector under the steering column (if your key is in the column) as this is a common source of problems as well. You’ll be looking for evidence of melting on the blue wire. Ignition switch failure and firewall connector problems can also cause this. If you want more information on how all of this works, you can check out my Classic Mopar Ignition Systems video. It’s packed with useful info.

That is the parking brake, or “emergency brake.” As it has a mechanical connection to the rear brakes, it can be used as a normal brake in a pinch. It’s nowhere near enough stopping power to take a car out on the road, but can be useful for situations like this, where the brakes are often not functional.
