Part 2 of our steering process.. We assembled all the necessary fittings to do so, and then mounted our hydraulic pump as well as our autopilot. We mounted our hydraulic cylinder as well and ran the hose from the pump to the cylinder.. bled out the system and wam bam we got our steering going! Happy days!! One more BIG item off our list!

Get a brake fluid tank from car with sensor for low level for your tank connect to red led

One suggestion be sure to have a sight glass on your reservoir. If you have slow leak this will be the first indicator that you have potential problem. Now you know about tape. We did have a pipe dope that you could use for oil lines. It purpose was not to seal but lubricate the threads so they did not gall. Tightening the nuts on the fittings I was taught hand tighten then wrench seven flats. After several thousand times I found that to be true.

Our Hydrive hydraulic system tech support is adamant that only copper tube should be used for sailboats, instead of the plastic tubing due to pressure loss when it expands. Makes the steering "soft". It will be interesting to see how you go with it when steering under high rudder pressure.

We know numerous cruisers who have the nylon tubing and have been perfectly fine with it long term as well and have heard numerous complaints about the copper tubing so yeah will be interesting to see. 👍🏻

I've seen several sailing channels recently that were dealing with hydraulic steering or water makers. At least you read the directions. PTFE tape should never be used in hydraulics or high pressure water. One channel even recommended buying lots and lots of tape.NOOOOOO. Another one taped everything including the straight thread compression fittings. NOOOOO. PTFE tape can flake off and clog hydraulic valve passages. These are made to very tight tolerances. The Fluid you are using is very low viscosity. If tape flacks off and gets into the passages you may as well pack it with grease. Also the type of compression fitting you are installing, and those are used on high pressure side of water makers, PTFE would prevent you from getting a good seal. It is a metal seal, not a tape seal.

Another very exciting episode. You guys put a lot of work on that trench, and as all the others, it's an important one. Many moving parts on a boat project (both literally and figuratively). Still not a good idea to mix NPT and BSP even with the tape.

Yep, definitely NOT compatible, different angles on the taper and the thread forms are different. www.valvesonline.com.au/references/threads/ "Never swap threads if it is a high pressure application. NPT/NPS and BSP threads are not compatible due to the differences in their thread forms, and not just the fact that most sizes have a different pitch. NPT/NPS threads have a 60° angle and have flattened peaks and valleys (Sellers thread form) where as BSP threads have a 55° angle and have rounded peaks and valleys (Whitworth thread form)."

Great vid. You have excellent teaching skills there Ricky. Those hose cutters come in so handy. Mine are slightly larger and are great for any hose types up to 1-1/2”. Up in Canada we have a place called Princess Auto, and they are a fantastic place to get all kinds of tools. Just wondering, what type of fluid are you using in the system?

If the ram is strong enough you should only need one also I think the way he added the auto pilot pump to the system the auto pilot and steering share the hydraulic ram, the only place I have seen two rams is where the autopilot was independent so had a pump "stupid french word" (reservoir) and ram to itself usually very short with long electrical connections to the autopilot or where the size of the ram (or pump) was wrong and a second added (larger pump). I suspect there is a manual emergency tiller also in case they loose oil pressure avoiding the need for a second ram for offshore cert. I admire the work they have put in he will know that boat and all its systems before it fails (lets face it it is a boat things fail). I would sail to where he is if I had fiddly stuff to repair and swap cash for skill!
