Installing Switchback LEDs On My 2022 WRX

In this video I am removing the factory halogen bulb on my 2022 premium model wrx where the limited and GT trims got an LED C Light. I am replacing that halogen bulb for some switchback leds that will give a similar appearance to the higher end Headlights on the GT model. This is a very cheap and easy job to do.

Below are links to the leds I used in the video, and some resistors that are similar to the ones I used. If these links no longer work, just know that you can use any 7440 style LED and any 50w resistor.

I've been talking to Diode Dynamics...they will eventually have C light I think...that's what I really want for this car. They gave led headlights but kept the c light from us :(. This is a really good upgrade to the lights! I didn't even think of this.

It does seem to have a much cleaner look. I don't care much for orange lights personally. A plus is its a cheap mod and seems very easy to install also.

You can disable the beeping noise from.the seatbelt not being on, turn the car on make sure all doors are closed and click the seat belt in and out quickly like 20 times and it disables it, I did it and it works. Just a good tip if you are working on your car a lot and move it in and out.

I do know of that trick but I plan on removing the speaker out of the cluster. It's pretty easy and worth it haha I somehow always end up having the car on accessory or something and have to sit and listen to it beep all the time lol

There are two other solutions for the hyperflash. Place a LED flash relay or disable "turn signal outage" in the car software. If the car isn't suitable (not too old).

Hi, I am looking to out switchbacks on my 21 premium I just had a few questions.... 1) do you only need a resistor in the taillights in order to have it not flash in the headlights? My taillights already have resistors thats why Im asking 2) I realized with my 21 premium, that the turn signal isnt actually even in the headlight itself. It only lights up in the fog lights. Will installing the switchbacks have it light up in the actual headlight??? Thanks in advance!

The resistors do help preventing hyper flash, but they get very hot during use, so be very careful with those, they'll breakdown return to hyper flashing again and possibly enough to catch fire.

Installed 6 ohm resistors to the front and it still hyperflashes but only sometimes. Double checked connections, everything is solid. 😢

@@dradammichael From Amazon, I got Auxbeam 2023 B21 Series 7443. Only thing though is I had to put tape to keep them secure after connecting them. Regardless though they're super bright and look great.

Beware about mounting resistors to plastic. They get very hot and can melt through your housing. :/

That's RU-vid mechanics for ya. Also, he mounted the 6ohm resistor that's meant for the front lights to the rear harness without changing the rear bulbs to LEDs, so the rear wiring is taking 55W instead of 21W 😂 not a fire hazard at all

@haley746 You seem to know your stuff. I put a 50W resistor in each taillight and switched the rear to LED. No hyperflash. But I now put LEDs in the front turn signal, and they hyperflash. Do you know why? Diode dynamics just tells me to install 2 more resistors. But I’d like to understand why the 2 I have aren’t enough.

Are the limited headlights not compatible with the wiring of the base and premium? Like if I wanted to buy limited headlights from Subaru OEM parts store could they mount and wire the same as the premium headlights?

I was told they aren't a direct plug and play but I haven't heard anyone confirm or deny that yet.

@@StreetInspired1 called up my parts store. They said you would need to buy new wiring harnesses as well and the total is like $3200 I think for both the headlights and wiring harnesses.

Terrible idea. If the resistors are meant for the front, put it in the front. You are loading the rear harness to 55W (14.4V/6Ohm=2.4A or 34W, plus the 21W of the bulb) instead of the 21W bulb it's designed for, as you plugged a resistor there without changing the bulb to LED. That's more than twice the current the wiring was designed for! The wires ARE going to overheat.

I would just double-check the connections, and if everything's good, you may need a second resistor. You could test this by swapping one of the leds out with the halogen and see if it stops. If it does, I would add a second resistor in the opposite location of the first one. So if you installed resistors in the rear, I would also install them in the front or switch to a larger resistor in the rear.

I'm surprised they didn't use the C-Light as the DRL. The C-Lights only comes on with the headlights? And what are the DRL's on the Limited model?

There are no C Lights on the base and premium models. Only the limited and GTs get them. The base and premium ge the ugly orange halogens you see in his video

bro. do not mount the resistor on the taillight housing. it will melt the plastic if you use the flasher for too long.

These resistors seem to be doing pretty well. I pulled my tail lights out a while after this to swap turn signal bulbs and there was no damage to the tail light. From the resistor heating up.

The running lights was demonstrated with the E-brake on. Unfortunately I'm not sure there is a way to disable the headlights coming on once you start driving.

I've been trying to figure this out!! On the VA it was a simple module you unplug and it's good to go. Been looking on this one and haven't figured it out yet but I'll update if I ever do!

I know I'm late, but I bought the GTR lighting switchbacks with built in resistors but it still hyperflashes. Would these resistors fix that issue even though the bulbs come with built in resistors??

Yeah, they should fix it! These bulbs were supposed to have built-in resistors too, but didn't work. I guess some cars are more picky than others.

Thanks for the answer! Where do you put the resistors in the back? I read on Amazon that they can get hot enough to melt plastic and even other wires and wanna hear where you put it. I don't wanna have to get the resistors and find out it melted my other wires

@DankJoe 007 I 3m taped mine underneath the tail light and haven't had any issues. There's not a whole lot of room back there to put it but if you're worried about it getting hot you could try to extend the wires and 3m tape it somewhere away from the light and other wires

Unrelated installation question. Do you know how to install the Noble NBS Wide Angle Blue Mirrors w/Defrosters and Turn Signals Subaru WRX 2022-2023 × 1?

They're easy but tricky. You will just point the mirror all the way to one side and put your hand behind the glass and pop it out. It takes a good bit of force and sometimes you can shatter your oem one trying to get it out. But once its out theres one small little pin the derfroster plugs into. Pull that out and then the new ones get plugged in and popped on. The wiring is the tricky part. You have to find wires for the turn signal to tap into.

Whether you put resistors in the front or back it all runs on the same circuit so they will work the same. I chose the back because the front wouldn't been a tighter space to try to install them.

@@LjGarciaSA it will still turn the headlights on with DRL. I'm looking into disabling the drl. I don't like that the headlights come on as soon as the ebrake is down.

It's been in there for a while now and even left the signals running for a few minutes non-stop and they never damaged the light. Maybe these don't get as hot as others.

When I replaced the turn signal bulbs with led bulbs in my 2017 WRX, I used a plug in flasher relay that took care of the hyperflash issue. Is there one available for the 2022 WRX that would do the same?

Those are nice! I looked everywhere under the dash and did not see one, also haven't seen any aftermarket relays yet so im not sure how its set up on this car.
