For your countersinking, I know you can get countersink bits in different angles to match the angle on the screw heads.

Hi I follow your consturction. Could you explain why you fixed the strut on the bottom and not on the transom it would be much more rigid. Thanks Carlo

Old habits die hard I guess. Our racing rules require the boat be configured as closely to the original, full-size boat as possible, so this is really my only excuse for floor mounting. But now that you've brought it up, I'll rethink it, and if you see me mount it to the transom in future builds you'll know that it's all because of you!

Scott, really enjoying this video series. Being that the bearing block bracket and bearing block itself are so heavy could the footprint of the bracket and the tail of the bearing block be milled down an 1/8" and the removed material replaced with a piece of 1/8" ply to make up for it? Might make the transom slightly stronger and save a small bit of weight. Your thoughts?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros Год назад
Yup you betcha. But I'm trying to keep it simple so the average bear can do it. Stick around, I have a solution coming up in a video soon that I think you'll like

Smart ! They what they do in NASCAR racing. The car is set-up to turn to the left all the time and they "hold" the car with the steering wheel on the "straights" !

Curious as to why 1 degree of strut angle? I’ve heard matching the strut angle to the angle of attack on the ride surface is considered a neutral set up. I don’t even know what that means lol.

You know, come to think of it I don't have an answer to this question. I guess I settled upon 1° as my happy place several years ago and just sort of stuck with it.

Under the heading of trust but verify (I heard a smart guy say that once or twice), unless I'm confused, it seems like pre-disposing the strut toward the turn fin is angling it the same direction as a rudder during a left turn. For a boat racing in a clockwise direction, this seems counterintuitive. Could you explain the mechanics of how this helps in the turns? Thanks Scott!
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros Год назад
I see where your thinking is coming from, but your idea only makes sense if the boat were stationary and we only wanted to spin it in a circle. In this case, yes the boat would spin around much quicker if we angled the strut to the left. The difference is we don't want to use the prop thrust to spin the boat, instead we use it to thrust the boat toward the turn fin, reducing the drag caused by the fin, and pushing the boat toward the turn instead of spinning it around.
@billmitchell8305
@billmitchell8305 Год назад
@@M5PerfHydros Thanks Scott, I think I follow...The rudder steers the front end, and the angle on the strut pushes the back end...Am I in the ballpark? Does the theory also apply with hooked turn fins? I know you're not a fan, but Mike Luszcz recommends it for the boat I'm building. Thanks again!
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros Год назад
I've seen a few boats with hooked fins work awesome, so I know it's possible, but many have terribly bad behavior, so it certainly seems much more finicky that a straight fin. Thus I suspect the boat may be a bit more difficult to set up, but I would expect all other dynamics to remain the same
@billmitchell8305
@billmitchell8305 Год назад
@@M5PerfHydros As a newbie, I really don't know what it looks like when a turn fin is behaving badly, but I guess I'll have to figure it out. But I might also get ahold of a straight fin, just in case! Thanks again, Scott. Really appreciate and enjoy your videos!

I've been told the rudder on the same side as the turn fin pushes the rear of the boat around the turn causing the outside to drag the water , the rudder opposite side of the turn fin pulls the rear around the turn causing the outside to skip over the water which is faster, But can cause the boat to hook spin easier ?

The strut that your using in this video I can not find it at Speedmaster where could you get it
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros Год назад
It's a modified speedmaster strut as supplied by Brent Byers along with his solid flex drive system. I believe it's a speedmaster extended 1/4" strut with the rear cut down

Love the idea of the strut on the bottom to make it look more realistic, my only question is once you are finished the boat and need to adjust the strut for whatever reason……..do you use anything to seal the area up or is the fitment so tight that water doesn’t get in???? Or do you expect a bit of water to enter the inside of the boat?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 месяца назад
The fitment is very snug, but if you do find that you need to enlarge the slot for more movement just put a dab of silicone in any gaps
@gord1131

@@M5PerfHydros awesome thanks for the response. I do have another question for you. In relation of the rudder to turn fin, when you flip one of your hydros upside down on your workbench is the fin and rudder equal distance off the bottom of the boat or would the rudder be a bit deeper……. Turn fin deeper????? Building a hydro and was curious as the relation to each other.
