Love the video. I'm gonna use this video on my next catamaran I build.Not to sound needy but are you gonna make a video of sheeting this bad boy.Ive always thought that you just epoxy the whole sheeting then lay it down and do what you need to do to keep it in place..I'm sure looking at some of your video I'm a bad builder in alot of areas.So if you feel inspired please do a video of the sheeting even though you have a busy schedule. Stay Safe.

Uh oh. I'm a bad teacher because I already installed the decks! I'm sorry. I knew I should have done a video of it. You're basically correct.... when you are ready to install the decks you'll seal the entire bottom of the decking just as we did in the video, then add some colodial silica to the remaining epoxy to thicken it until it's about the consistency of peanut butter, and apply a bead of epoxy all around the perimeter of the hull where the decking will lay. I do one side at a time, left then right. Now install the deck and just as you say, do whatever you gotta do to hold it down 100% of the way around. Binder clips, blue tape, weights, small dogs, anything you have, put it on there. I find it's best to do a complete dry run first so you don't get caught with yer pants down and your deck sticking up somewhere. I hope this helps, and again I apologise for being a bad teacher. You can do it!

Thousands of hours of flight simulator and FPS games have left me nearly immune to dizziness... and I totally watch long "boring" videos for fun. I have to seal a boat soon and learning the methods in use already helps a great deal. I'm building a warship for a combat game (not the one with the short range ball bearing guns... something more dangerous and less sane) and as a result of the rules/requirements necessary all boats are going to be 3d printed and layer lines are great points for leaks to happen. A bit of sanding and a few wipe coats of this thinned epoxy should fix the whole issue (as should the wax coating I got from another youtube... wax the outside and hit it gently with heat gun, the wax just soaks in instantly.) Combining it with the wax method should really seal things up nicely... right up till cannon fire punches holes in it and starts breaking important stuff... like the bilge pump keeping the bugger afloat...

stupid question....if you make the epoxy mixture thin enough with the alcohol ,can you just use a small spray gun and spray the inside of the boat with epoxy?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
That's not a stupid question at all! You're thinking, which is always a good thing! You absolutely could do that, but it seems an unnecessary complication to me and might miss the point a little bit... The main reason I thin the epoxy so much is so it'll penetrate well into the wood grain. To accomplish this I slop a boat-load (pun intended) of thinned epoxy onto the surface, wait a minute or two, and wipe off the excess. To do this with a spray gun you'd need to open the needle way up and spray like crazy. Of course you'd have the issue of overspray to deal with on the boat, the floor, and yourself. Better use an excellent respirator too... Imagine epoxy overspray in your lungs! Lastly, the spray would miss all areas not in sight, like up underneath stringers and any overhanging areas, so you still have to apply in those areas with a u-bent brush. So.... Can you do it? Sure. But that doesn't mean you should! Keep thinking, I like your style
@watchman1629
@watchman1629 3 года назад
Hi Scott...another question...I hope you are not getting sick of me....I took your advice and purchased a wood kit for 32 inch Wild Thing mono v-hull from Michael Luszcz (he is quite the charmer)....anyway I also purchased the West System epoxy kit and some hardware Bill Oxidean (a nice guy). The boat is coming along but seems to be getting quite heavy with all the epoxy :) I weighed the empty hull and it weighs about 1 lb and 9 oz. Thats not including a half pound deck, a 1 pound motor, and maybe another pound of additional hardware and batteries. Now Im questioning whether I should pivot in my plans and just make a fiberglass or carbon fiber boat using the wooden model as a mold/platform. That would likely be at least half as heavy in terms of the boat frame. Do you think that is a good or reasonable idea? My motor is a big 2000Kv and I have two 3S lipo graphene batteries. Since Im a newbie, Im not sure if this is enough power to reasonably move the heavy wood boat, or should i downsize to a fiberglass or carbon fiber boat. Thanks a million..I always appreciate your knowledge and experience
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 3 года назад
Hey I almost missed your question... Sorry I'm late! 1.5lbs doesn't sound like a heavy boat to me, so I'm not sure I'd give up on it so soon. Even if you did decide that you want to use it as a plug to make a fiberglass mold, you should still finish it and run it as is to see how it performs. That way you could make any needed changes before you mold it. Regardless, quit worrying so much and RUN IT!

How would you reccomend doing this to keep a nice smooth finish without runs and with out imperfections? Have you got a video you could point me towards? Thanks
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 3 года назад
I don't know of any way to apply epoxy perfectly smooth. Just seal the wood and sand it smooth before painting. But if you're trying to get a wood finish and not planning to paint it you'll need to apply a few heavy coats before sanding and buffing it to get a glossy smooth finish.... There are no shortcuts, sorry!
@robertriggers5216
@robertriggers5216 3 года назад
I suggest that you start using S1 epoxy sealer it penetrates deep into the wood you can't beat it for preserving wood it just does not go on the top couple layers then plywood like you use for your models it might penetrate halfway through you do it from both sides your Woods fully impregnated with epoxy

Scott, thank you for making this video, I’m building my 1st boat and learning how to seal it, I like what you did, making it look good in the open hull. I saw you wiped after applying the 1st coat, for the 2nd coat, it’s taking longer to soak in the wood, should I wait longer before I wipe it ? Also, in the open hull, before using Scott Brite to scurb after wiping the excess sealing liquid, should I wait for it to dry and cure before scrubing ? I tested a strip of wood but I can’t tell the 2nd coat after wiping and scrubing right after or wait after it cured is better or not. Thank you !

It was - 30 C last night only good for building new boats & that's OK with me. Thanks Dave
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 года назад
I've seen guys use right wound cables with left rotation props and it works fine for about 10 meters before ripping the stuffing tube out of the boat! Imagine what would happen if you stuck one end of a cable in a vice and began twisting the cable at the other end with a pair of vice grips. If you twist it in direction of the windings the cable will do nothing but tighten. If you twist it opposite of the windings the cable will literally come unwound. Not a good thing at 30k rpm!

@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 года назад
Hello PWG223, Anytime you have a crack in the hull, whether it's wood or fiberglass, you need to know why it broke before you fix it. For example, if it got damaged from an impact of some sort then yes, you can just clean it well with rubbing alcohol and shove some epoxy into it and be done. On the other hand, if it broke because the hull is flexing you'll need to do some reinforcing of the area or it'll simply break again.

@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Hmm, I don't think so. It would work fine everywhere you can spray it, but it only shoots in a straight line and thus won't seal anywhere you can't see... The undersides of everything would remain dry unsealed wood. No bueno! Also, too thick on application. The beauty of highly thinned epoxy is that it soaks into the wood instead of just laying on top. And yes, too heavy! The clear will begin to set very quickly so it'll be difficult to wipe out the excess. Sticky stinky mess too! I DO shoot clear in the engine well after sealing with epoxy. It hurts me to do it because I don't like unnecessary steps and unnecessary weight, but it just looks so darn cool!

@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Those are all fair questions... Yes the original boat was wood constructed and unpainted on the bottom, which allows me to do that and run the boat "legally" in RCU. In our club we have fairly tight rules where we like our models to look as much like the original boat as possible. This is also why I've painted the ride pads and recovery pads with 'aluminum' paint, so they would have an original look. Lastly, yes you could build it from fiberglass and paint a wood-like color on the bottom and I'm sure it would pass inspection. Our rules are tight, but we fudge when it's reasonable to do so and a reasonable effort to comply has been made. Come race with us!

Well I'm not a rigger guy so I'm not sure who makes the best ones, but the MLBoatworks kits are pretty hard to beat so maybe take a look here; mlboatworksrc.com/shop?olsPage=products%2Fgsx-version-2-series-sport-hydroplane-kits-gsx-vrs-2-srs1

Isn't West System epoxy supposed to be a 5:1 mixture?
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
Good question... Yes it is! The pumps I use are made by West Systems and are calibrated to give the correct 5:1 mix with full strokes. When mixing smaller quantities I use a small scale to weigh out the correct ratio.

@@M5PerfHydros Thank you...I bought the system too so I'll need to make sure I put the right pumps on the right bottles.

@@M5PerfHydros So while watching this...2 more questions came to mind. First you mentioned not sealing some areas because that's where the top is going to glue to...if you sealed those areas wouldn't the epoxy used to glue the top on still stick? Because I was thinking...why not just seal all the wood before assembly? That way you can be sure to get the wood sealed in the hard to reach areas...then all you would need later is a quick coat to seal the joints.
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 4 года назад
@@InspGadgt - Glue holds best on rough, porous surfaces, so I definitely want bare wood for any joint. Think of it as a tree... If the roots are very shallow or laying on the surface of the ground (like epoxy on a previously sealed surface), the tree blows over easily. But if the roots go deep (like epoxy soaked into dry wood), they tree will be much stronger.

Hi Scott Larry Welle here, I don't know if it's possible, but could you possibly sell me one of those 1/8 drivers helmet and figure I don't need the bust, but the Hellman head would be great. I'm putting together an old Dumas kit and I think it would look nice with a pilot or driver.

@@larrywelle2679 - Incoming on Facebook messenger. Though the resolution isn't great on these, they can be made to look awesome if a coat of epoxy were applied. If you'd like I can do that and send them to you. Please reply on Messenger and we'll work it out

Could you not just buy a tin of dope witch i use on my model rc planes???
@M5PerfHydros
@M5PerfHydros 2 года назад
That may work fine, though dope is so very thin I'm not sure it would be nearly as durable as an epoxy. Hey I have an idea... Why don't you switch to boats and try it? We'd love to have you in the hobby!

Maybe, but once the alcohol dissipates, which is very quickly, you still have epoxy. Dope is dope. But hey... I still think YOU should try it and let me know if it works!
