About OFF GRID with DOUG and Stacy
In 2010 we decided to sell everything and build a log cabin on 11 acres. We have lived in the log cabin for a decade now with no solar power or wind power plus zero public utilities. *Off grid living *Rain water catchment *Cooking with wood
*Food growing *Cooking from scratch *Raised bed gardening
*Food harvesting *fermenting the harvest *food preservation
*Holistic Remedies like Grandma made *How to make money and live this life
*storing food in a root cellar *DIY Build projects

This fire pit is one of a few covered pits that is on the list ru-vid.comUgkxAU9pOCSV9Y5JprooHvfxTpOrt4hx8uRM of approved products for Disney Fort Wilderness. The product served its purpose well and provided excellent fires throughout the evening. We were able to open the door and do s'mores, but I had to be careful because the handle was a bit hot on occasions. Additionally, I wish they had replaced some of the standard nuts with lock nuts in some places. We lost the door handle after just a couple of days of usage. Not a deal breaker, just a recommendation. I still give it 5 stars.

When my parents built their first new house (on-grid) in the 1980’s, they added a wood stove. Bricks were added behind it and it stood on a brick foundation. This gave the floor and walls protection and we had plenty of room to set aside wood to dry out when hauled in from outside.

100% off grid here in our tiny 16x24 log cabin and a seperate 12x24 kitchen/living room. Both are heated strictly with woodstoves. And a tip for those who buy the Class A stainless pipe but don't like the shiny look, I roughed mine up with steel wool and painted with hightemp black paint. Went off grid a year ago thanks to this channel. Best move we've ever done. Love to y'all

If some of y’all are installing metal roofing behind your wood stove, may I suggest that you install it a few inches off the floor and a few inches from the ceiling. Also, install it so it’s off the original wall sheathing. Now the stove can heat the metal and produce an air flow using convection. The air behind the metal will rise, drawing more air in from the bottom and go out the top. The metal doesn’t have to go all the way to the ceiling, as long as it’s higher than the non insulated stove and pipe.

I wish they taught how to live off the grid in schools from k-12 & colleges. A manual of how to manage a home, garden, animals, along with water, fire & power, as well as health & first aid. It would be amazing if schools had a design like yours where kids and adults could learn using hands-on experience. Or even a summer and winter camp that teaches these ways of survival and management.

Tips for the Buddy heaters! I have the smaller one and I needed to purchase a hose adapter to use the 20lb tank. Not expensive. They also recommend a filter and I found out you really do need that! I found one at Ace hardware but the Buddy online store has them and you can order it with the heater. I also bought a propane gauge to know when it was getting low. Also recommend you give it a long outdoor burn (a couple hours) before you use it inside. It burns off the exterior residue which is really noxious. I love mine and it works great! Texas Deb 😁❤️

@@dleben8597 yes. I followed the instructions to do a pre-burn outside, and I lit it in my tiny shed that evening but it still had the odor it produces to burn off the manufacturers' coating. That's why I recommend a couple hour initial outdoor burn, because after I did that the smell went away and I was able to use it indoors and I stayed nice and warm.

We had a chimney business until 2008. I (and @Doug) can not stress enough... 1. ALL through points have to have triple wall pipe. 2. Dont mix manufacturers products... they wont line up correctly. 3. Inside pipe flange goes down... not up. You leak creosote on the outside of pipe. 4. Learn to clean chimney and do it often. 5. Dont burn green or garbage or treated wood. 6. Have a dry chem pack handy to toss in stove if you get a flue fire. 7. DO NOT USE B Vent pipe for wood stoves.

Some of them still use a pitcher pump to get their water and carry it into the house everyday. My grandfather put a pitcher pump in the kitchen at the side of the sink for my grandmother - talk about your innovation! But the Amish beard and hat are a nice touch. But high-dollar high-tech "homesteading" can work too - just keep it real.

Thank you Doug for showing us that we do not to be intimanited to have this option. But also giving the tip for those of us who are stuck on grid! Utility company decided they need twice as much money from their customers! 🙄 I live in a single wide mobile home & would like to install a wood stove.

Nice woodstove. We have a small cabin on the ten acres. It was built over the weekend years ago by my cousin. He milled his own lumber. He put a small wood stove in the corner with beautiful stone under it and on the 2 walls. It may be small, but it warms the place up quickly. We have a Mr. Buddy heater as well. We loss electricity alot and the last area on their list to clear up to get electricity back running. We joke around that we are the" generator village." Suddenly, you hear all the generators kick in when the electricity goes out. We tend not to use ours unless it is out for hours on. There are 8 families that live back here in the mountains

My grandmother had a wood cook stove. Used it to heat house, cook, and can. They can't be beat. Love your stove. Will have to look into what they cost.

That’s slick how you used the corrugated steel for lower half of wall. Cost me 11k to do all pine car siding in my 700 sq ft cabin

That is awesome, I hadn't seen before a stove pipe with that type of cleanout pipe. that looks pretty ideal!

We use the Mr. Heat (smaller one for small propane bottles) and Mr. Heat (round ones which we call sunflower heater because of its shape) for when we go ice fishing in our ice houses. I also use one in my unheated shed where I milk my cows.
