@@WaldosWorld Me too, that's my dream, then I can do a Cummins swap! Great job by the way. The truck turned out awesome, I'm sure you're really proud, I know I would be 👍
@@WaldosWorld when its so easy to just bust it open a bit... the weather should be in your favor, I don't want to hear... "I was going to build a shop and then it got past me for a bit... you only have two hands and you do have this talent for sure but you could google it on how to start the chain saw and also how to hold the chain saw... you might even have one friend who could be your other set of eyes on that door.... and then one other way which is fairly quick.. hook a strong chain to that door on the barn... tie it off to the hitch on the back of the truck and then with a rolling start and foot flat on the metal under the fuel pedal... yank the sob right the hell off! I think that would make a great video as well.... my first real job with my "Chevins" truck". You could build a shelf out of the usable boards or just burn them and keep warm. LOL, I understand your situation and this was my way of venting so we are kinda on the same page.
That is a badass truck, Waldo! Your attention to detail with the wiring is top notch, and thanks for showing us the actual wires. Too many videos gloss over wiring (running harnesses, looms, tying and securing it). I really appreciate your specificity on these aspects of rebuilding/modifications. Keep up the great work!!
Waldo: Just found your series for the first time today. Love your project. Your craftsmanship and attention to detail are first rate. Keep on truckin'!
I'm not sure if you know about this but the OBS GM pickups from 88-99 have door dingers/sound maker things that can be swapped with one from a mid 90's camaro. I just did it to my '00 K3500 dually and its wayyyyyy better. Super easy and simple swap too. I just saw is under the dash when you were wiring and it came to mind. Just started watching your videos and they are great! Keep up the awesome work.
It’s deer fly hatch time here in N.C. too! It’s about three weeks of dousing one’s self with Deep Woods Off until they subside some. I can’t wait to see what you do as far as the bed design.
Oh goodness. Around here, DEET does nothing to stop the deer flies. And they've been bad the last few years! Basically the only thing you can do is cover up or work inside. Luckily it's black fly season right now, and DEET works just fine on them 😬
I envy you the relative ease of your mirror install Waldo. Couple of winters back I slid my Ford into a tree plowing. I thought I got off lucky because all it did was wipe out passenger side mirror. Then I come to the realization that it fragged the harness . All better now but I had to get cozy with the18 wires to that mirror. All your users plus heat and power fold and power extend and of course the air temp sensor. Why wouldn't the air temp sensor be in a mirror? Any fool should know that, well almost any fool. I guess I'm still a touch sensitive about that rodeo. It was... an education.
Man you editing and filming is spot on. You may find a market in teaching that online. I know you mentioned in one of your videos that the subs came from your Cummins swap. That is part of it but like I say, your presentation is the key. I can see it but at this time cannot replicate it. Carry on.
I actually have a 97 3500hd that was converted to 4x4 by an aftermarket company after it left the factory. They used a Dana 70 (I think) axle in place of the factory I-beam. It would be neat to have a Cummins in place of my 454 gas for fuel economy!
Waldo , ya do nice work , Little tip that has helped me over the years is to use a label maker and write fuse no# and circuit info for example ( fuse 3 E.C.M. ) then that label is tucked into the corrugated tube so you don't see all these 1/2 inch flags on the wiring harnesses . this will help you if you have a problem because you will know every wire you touched . It will also help you in five years when you cant remember what wire is this ????? looking forward to the flat bed build .. Pete m
That's a good tip! So far I've been keeping a spreadsheet of all the wires that I've touched including their colors. The labels might be a better idea though 👍
I wish it was possible for you to release videos like this everyday😂 I know it’s not possible so I’m the meantime, I’ll rewatch all your old videos and work my way back through projects. Can’t wait to see what you do with the big dump truck
Those gmc trucks had a big recall for its frame rail behind the cab. You need to fish or side plate by the bends of the frame with 1/4 inch thick plate.
Great video, Waldo. I like how the mirrors turned out. Once you get the flatbed built, it would be Interesting to see what your truck weighs, if you have a local scale.
Thanks, Greg! I'm also very curious about what it weighs. I expect the bed to weigh around 1,500 lbs, but I'll definitely be making a trip to the scale to find out!
Thank you for taking on a project of my favorite platfowm truck. The C3500HD! While Cummins and GM could have saved you the trouble of adapting that engine to the truck, they didn't. So I guess those Cummins lovers really dig this build too? This truck, at the time was mostly heavier duty thanmost on the road with the frame anf suspension supplied. They also have an abundance of donor trucks out there for all but the frame and that rearend. I have seen some 4wd versions and crewcabs but do not own one of those yet! Some trucks were converted right off of the line though so it is possible that a lunker is still out there... In general, the pladtic injection molders in China are having a firld day with "tow mirrors" of every shape, size and accessory capacity. I like the ones similar to yours, but with heat to keep them clear, wired to the defroster, maybe? Adding that power switch to the truck for both mirrors is a huge plus. You might have added a donor interior panel with the socket for that switch, maybe for locks and windows also, from a burb or tahoe? I have a feature on my kid vacation grocery hauling Nissan Quest ( I knoe, it's a long story, Dodge broke me...) . That feature is that when I signal a lane change or turn (day or night IDK?), a light projects to the side from the front end on anything on that side, like a low or no light vehicle driving next to me. This light has saved me a few times, last minute, someone pulls up next to me in traffic, i see them because of that side light, mission accomplished delay lane change, then go. My eyes have become somewhat sensitive to bright lights, especislly from the side at night and this light is softer than my irritation level so I am thinking it comes from lower on the van than the side mirror is? Very valuable to me and perhaps dome of my fellow drivers on the road. I wonder hoe harf it would be to wire in a side light (both sides), that does NOT flash, to illuminate the next lane, without causing night blindness to others? On the Nissan it works from the directional signal. Most power sources through that circuit flash though? Your truck project videos are excellent! Your project has turned out very good. I am anxious to see your bed build, purposing, accessories, lighting scenario, gooseneck, 5th wheel and or tractor trailer hitch when installed. On the farm, we often work outside at night so maybe your headache rack and rear hitch/bumper area will have some spot/area lighting for the working guy? Lastly, if you had another Dana 80 or Rockwell rear end could you make a "pup" out of it for doubling your load for hauling? Disc breaks Capacity Wheels & tires Say two 12x8's per trip are better than one? Best wishes!
Thanks for the comment! That's interesting, I've never noticed a side "lane change" light like that before! As for rear lighting, yep the headache rack is going to have a couple 6" oval rear facing lights
@@WaldosWorld be sure to add a spotlight on a swivel mount with a locking handle to the side or top of thet headache rack for the night time, "where is that"?
Yeah, top speed is currently 67 MPH, limited by gearing and engine RPM. I plan to install 3.31 gears to solve that. An overdrive would've been the smart way, but I couldn't find one that was even close to fitting my budget
@@WaldosWorld understand that for sure! I wanted to build a 99 years ago with the 6 and it was crazy high then. 3:31 in rear will be good. The 5 has a deeper 1st and reverse than the od 6 so the taller gears won't mess with your low creep much!
PLEASE tell me there are plans to add a wheel lift wrecker bed to this truck? You've got a great start so far and I can't wait to see the finished project!
Looks really good man, I think the only thing I'd have done differently is been a Chad and put Semi wheels tires on it, being you plan to re-gear the rear end anyway. I think it'd be pretty sweet looking with some 22's and a tiny bit of lift on the truck itself.
One of the biggest hold ups on my dream project is the wiring. I don't know if there is a company somewhere that sells factory wiring harnesses for 2nd gen dodge trucks. And I don't want to use a wiring harness out of a junkyard truck (just steer clear of future electrical issues or fires) Pretty much my project is building a 2nd gen dodge ram 3500 with new or remanufactured parts. Good video Waldo !
New subscriber and really enjoy the build! I have a 94 cab & chassis that I need a new flatbed, can't wait on seeing yours! Really like the chassis color, very cool😎👍
theres a fuse update for power mirrors as they in factory configuration were always hot and a few fires resulted. should be able to google the factory updated inline fuse or put a 5amp inline
Hey Waldo , I noticed something . When you started the truck after the mirror install, the driver side headlight came on for a split second . Probably not a problem, just wonder why it did that. I have to admit that my knowledge on electrics is pretty sparse. Truck is lookin better all the time. Great work 🌵
Thanks, Scott! Yeah, something is wrong with the DRLs. I'll have to look into it at some point, but I have some other miscellaneous electrical issues to sort out like the brake lights and wipers not working 🤷♂️
Wow, great work Waldo. The truck has come such a long way, and all your work is paying off and the build reflects that. Also, love chrome mirrors and how it compliments the silver paint! Don’t know if I’m late to submit, I just had 2 questions. 1. Are you going to keep the GMT/HD Work grill, or thinking about a Sierra grill while keeping the mid/bottom section intact of course? 2. Any plans on a 4x4 conversion later down the line as the channel grows. If so, would you go the Dana 50/60 route, or go all the way with a custom Dana 80, or GM 14 Bolt front axle? Just to keep with the HD theme haha Anyway, always appreciate watching your videos Waldo. The editing, and quality keeps getting better every time. Can’t wait to see what you do next
Those mirrors went easily. And they look fantastic! The soldering is definitely the way to go. Billy Bob is coming down towards the end now. Another question for you- Have you ever worked as a car or truck mechanic?
Thanks, Pete! Good question! Hopefully, I'll have the AMA out next weekend to fill in a gap since the flatbed video definitely won't be ready within the next week 😬
Waldo, very clean work. Being a 1995, shouldn’t the truck have a third brake light? Or does it fall into a different set of rules since it’s considered a medium duty? My question for the ask me anything is this: what is your highest form of education? If college, what was your major/school/ year of graduation.
Question: Consider the truck is being built for future projects what projects are on your short list? Project car/truck make and model? Maybe fluff up the garage space a little? 👍 Either way love your content and watching the trucks from Australia
Hey Waldo! I’m a huge fan of the channel. My goal is to get into RU-vid and because your videos always look so professional, I was curious as to what camera(s) you use for filming and which editing software you employ. Thank you!
Hello friend, I really like your project since the beginning, I want to put a fuller transmission in my truck I would like to know where or how to find the parts I need to make the engine coupling and a 6-speed Eaton fuller box, thank you very much and congratulations your project is being very chingon
You'll need to figure out what bolt pattern is on the back of the engine. Eaton trannys typically use an SAE bolt pattern. Mine was SAE #2 in particular
Please borrow a neighbors small bucket loader or a dozer and cut out the road to the shop door.... take a chain saw and open the doorway up so that you can get in and out safely.... your going to put a bed on it and then things will just be worse... especially if you screw the door on the truck. I am not a gm man but for sure you at least picked the only brand I look at when its a product of gm and that is the gmc. One of the hardest fought for best looking rigs between the big three was the years of 94 through 97 and they all had their good points till it came to automatic transmissions, wiring issues, and just bad engines. I do like this twenty four valve engine very much so... I do lean on the twelve valve but come on, they reached a point of better go to the two dozen valve.
Very nice mirrors Waldo! I have a 99 Sierra short bed 4x4. It has power mirrors but no heat. Ive got some oem heated ones to put on. Glad you showed your kit. Also, have I noticed a change in your marital status?
Thanks, Bill! I really wanted heated towing mirrors, but they aren't available AFAIK. I've been married for years, though I often remove the ring when I'm wrenching 😬
@@WaldosWorld I totally understand the ring situation. My dad got his ring finger crushed. They had to cut the band off. He never wore another one. Ive been married twice, and divorced twice, lol. I never wore a ring either time. Alot of guys now wear the silicone rings. Im old school. I do like to see a precious metal band. A lot more symbolic. Funny, I know, coming from a guy that never wore one
It looks like you fixed the power steering issue. What was the problem / fix? I didn't see anything on this video; is it on another one? You did an amazing job on this project! I started watching your channel last year (when you did the flatbed build for this), and I started binge watching the whole series a few days ago. Got some good ideas for restoring my 70 Chevy C20 (mainly body work), which I'm also planning on building a flatbed for.
AMA question. Are there any plans to do shop build/upgrade videos? You're videos have been great. I'd really like to see what/how you think when it comes to "shop functionality".
The Truck looks great, but you are going to want to get an overdrive. Us old school guys remember when cars and trucks didn't have overdrives. Next to fuel injection, overdrive is the best automotive advancement in the last 50 years.
I've thought about that, but I still haven't decided. I guess the only reason that I wouldn't is because if someone asks: "is that a Cummins?" I'll be really impressed that they could identify it by sound. The emblem, however would just give it away 🤷♂️😂
@@WaldosWorld I have a 1993 f350 idi non turbo, but later on I want to drop a CAT 3125 engine with ETN transmission. Yes those mirrors are ideal and perfect.
Thank you for the video. What is the brand name of the mirrors and where did you get them? These would be perfect for my 1988 GMC. Keep up the good work.
