To me, when picking up Ullmark, they traded 3 pieces that are replaceable. Crossing my fingers that the goalie graveyard does not claim another victim.
Obviously you have never seen Kastelic play! He may be a big body, but 8 out 10 times, he played soft. Kastelic was a conundrum in Ottawa and he'll be a conundrum in Boston
@matthewgregory8218 If you cant make ullmark work, its a goalie coach or defense issue. Ullmark is an amazing person and goalie, he won vezina a year ago. Act a little more grateful that you just got an absolute steal lmao
Fun Fact, that 25th overall pick use to be Boston's own pick! They traded it to Detroit for 6 weeks of Tyler Bertuzzi. The Wings, took that pick and used it to get Alex DeBrincat from Ottawa. So in a weird 3 team/2 year trade, Ottawa acquired Ullmark, Detroit acquired DeBrincat, and Boston gets Korpisalo. In the words of Steve Dangle Oof Marone!
As a Bruins fan. I feel betrayed. I loved watching them both. Also very sad about the hug. The Goalie Hug. It was iconic. Plus. Bruins had Bussi as a potential goalie, down in Providence. We also have DiPietro. We got weaker. We definitely got weaker. Unless this pick is shown to be someone with potential. A dynamic scorer. Bruins got fleeced.
The real question is where ullmark signs next year. If he walks (they probably couldn't sign the two goalies as they both deserve starting goalie salaries) then it makes sense and is a good trade for Boston. If ullmark stays it's a big win, if they trade him at deadline and recoup assets it's a small won and if he leaves after one season for nothing, Boston wins the trade
Ulmark blocked trades per his contract, he has 1 year left on a contract they couldn’t extend before the trade. No team was gonna give up much for a 1 year contact with no idea what he wants or will do.
@@wellokthen720 sure except that's not what happened...Ottawa retained 1/4 million aka 25% of that deal for 4 more years. Boston meanwhile is paying their backup 2 mill less/year and have cost certainty on a solid backup for awhile. That, with a 1st, and a big boy up front could be a much worse return.
@ThePalisky they got probably the best return they could.. every GM in the league knew they couldn't afford to extend Ullmark and keep Swayman.. so the value was as high as it would ever be on an expiring contract.. comparing what Calgary got for their goalie, the Bruins made out well! The Sens get a big upgrade their weakest position and get rid of 75% of their worst contract by giving up a late first and a 4th line centre that they already have a replacement for in Chartier... really a win/win
As a Bruins fan I think this is the market value for a player that was behind a no trade clause. I was ready to get a second round for him. What we discovered this year is that you can have the greatest goalie tandem in the world. Come playoffs we get a expensive cheerleader every single game no matter which goalie starts because 1 will always sit.
From an Ottawa fan's perspective, I think you're massively overvaluing the pieces that Boston got. Kastelic had very little value at all beyond winning faceoffs. He was asked to play tough, but didn't actually pull that off and was clearly falling out of favour with the coaching staff. He's essentially a throw-in that *maybe* sticks on Boston's fourth line. Korpisalo, on the other hand, was completely abysmal. He was, statistically, the worst goalie in the league last year. Ottawa was on the hook to pay him $4M for the next 4 years. It's impossible to overstate how huge it is to get out from that contract for Ottawa. I would have expected a first for someone to take that contract, let alone getting a Vezina winning goalie alongside it. Even retaining 25% you would think it would take a good amount. For Boston, maybe Korpisalo turns it around and becomes an ok backup, but it seems like a massive and unnecessary risk to take on this season's worst goalie for 4 more years at $3M. For Ottawa, this basically feels like we traded Kastelic for Ulmark, one for one, while dealing with an anchor contract at the same time. Even if Ulmark doesn't extend, I'm fully onboard with this move.
LOL - nice. Know what's funny, at beginning of year when the Oilers sucked Boston fans figured we'd trade Draisaitl to Boston for Ullmark. I never laughed so hard - this is what Ullmark is worth? Boston couldn't get more? IMO a draft pick past 20 is more of a 2nd round pick, 25th pick is not very valuable. Great trade for Ottawa for sure.
@@KptKrunch9481 the pick is literally to be used to try and get necas, we can’t offersheet him without a 1st and if we work a trade our Carolina wants a pick, should of got more for ullmark but he wouldn’t sign and trade, he’s most likely one and done in Ottawa, is korpi great? No he’s an average goalie but kinkaid had good numbers with Boston lol, when you have defensive structure like Boston does it makes the game easier for the goalies, that being said kastellic isn’t a bruiser but anyone who plays in bostons bottom 6 gets turned into a bruiser
@@KptKrunch9481I’m from Canada (NB) I was hoping you guys were going to win, fk the panthers 😂, but most bruins fans knew if drai was even an option in trade it would of been like ullmark, JD, 2 firsts and probably poitras or Lysell
@@BrandonBelliveau-b2t I was thinking Pasta - You can't trade a superstar and not get one back in return. Regardless of the bounty coming back the best player wins the trade for the team, Jake is a 3rd/2nd liner at best. Ullmark is a good goalie but I don't think he'd of done much better than Skinner, and the firsts are more like 2nds imo. Unless you're drafting in the top 15 it's a crap shoot as to what you get, and even if you do manage to find a good player it's usually 3 to 5 years before they make a real impact on your team. Oilers in win now mode. And I hear ya on the Panthers ;)
Korpi was solid in Columbus when the rest of the team didn't hang him out to dry all night. Hell he was the reason a lot of games didn't end up 10-2 or something like that when the team was crap. I'd expect to see him do well in Boston and I'd still rather have him than Elvis.
Huge add for Ottawa, who were a solid goalie away from making the next step. This trade becomes bigger for the Senators if they can sign him and Ullmark doesn't go to free agency at the end of next season.
As a bruins fan, I'm ok with trading Ullmark. My problem is the bruins always get bad compensation when they trade players away. Look what we got for Seguin, or even Joe Thornton back in the day. No good, long-term players, or even decent draft picks. Our best trade was trading Kessel to Toronto because, of course, Toronto is the only team we can fleece.
That trade path of the #25 pick is actually quite interesting, because it is Boston's own pick. They traded it to Detroit for Tyler Bertuzzi back in the day. Detroit than traded it to Ottawa in the DeBrincat deal, who now traded it back to Boston. 🤣
As a sens fan, I think you’d be crazy to think that this wasn’t a fair, or even a good deal for Ottawa. There’s not a chance in hell they were going to go into next season with Korpi and Forsberg again. They were beyond terrible, and this is a better/ cheaper option than buying him out and getting nothing in return. Yes, Ullmark is on the final year of his deal and will need an extension, but hopefully that will give him that extra motivation. I just hope it doesn’t turn into another scumbag Debrincat situation. 😂
This makes zero sense for Boston. If they're trying to compete for a cup why are they so concerned with acquiring a "first" rounder? They get a fringe 4th liner that hits and fights sometimes, great. They already had 6 guys that can play on the 4th line. and now they're locked into a deal with Korpisalo for FOUR years. Will he play better? I'm sure, but is he Linus Ullmark? Not even close. They traded their best trading piece in the same division for quantity over quality. This feels like trading someone just to trade them. Almost forgot to mention a whopping 1.165 million in cap space gained, get the duck boats ready!
Sens win this one. Korpisalo might do well as a backup, but Swayman will be carrying the majority of load in Boston. Kastelic was too inconsistent during the season and saw his TOI diminished in most games. I suspect come next season, unless Boston is looking for a 4th line center, they'll place him on waivers so he can play in the AHL or he'll be a 13th forward.
Ullmark's NMC was always going to tank the value from the Bruin's perspective. Eliminating half of the NHL as trade partners would more than halve his potential value (something something Pareto principle). Two roleplayers and a late 1st is honestly more than I expected the Bruins would get in return. I wouldn't be surprised to see an extension quickly too.
Trade doesnt make sense to me from the Boston side. I feel like they couldve gotten more. What is funny is all of the goalies the Leafs fans think theyre getting are all being traded. Who plays goal for the Leafs next year? Woll?
hey Steve, just a reminder that the 3 picks in a row was Sweeney’s first draft. as for Ullmark, I completely respected him in Buffalo and loved him as a Bruin, but not the contract. I feel that he’s been slipping recently. his biggest weakness is sliding post to post. his slide is nowhere close to Sway, so I feel as he more lunges and puts himself out of position more then he should…but that’s my 2 cents.
For me this just makes no sense. Bruins have Bussi who has been the best ahl goalie for most of the last two seasons. We just don’t need korpisalo. Honestly would’ve been better off just keeping him until a team gets plagued by injuries and gets desperate
Love this deal for both teams. Bruins traded away there backup goalie, got a cheaper backup goalie thats signed for 3 years, a pick and player. I know ullmark isnt a backup but for the bruins he is
Goalies are the most difficult positional players to predict. Very few have ever changed teams and remained the same level. Edmonton used to trade away goalies and they got better. It could go either way for sure.
Bruins Fan. I was never under the impression the Bruins were going to make any waves in moving Ullmark. He’s a UFA end of the up coming season. Had he have say 2 years left on his contract they could’ve gotten more. I’m guessing. They got a few players back to fill spots. The got Ullmark money off the books. Gives them that much more freedom to land a Free Agent or 2. As well as resign whoever. Swaymen is the Goalie. As much as I like Ullmark. It’s just time to move forward from him.
Well that explains Woll being extended for too much money too soon....Leafs are in a shitstorm right now, they are not getting better by trading marner... maybe different, but not better.
Absolute home run for Ottawa. Korpisalo is average at best IF** he can come back from his horrific play. But as it stands, he is a massive negative asset and I would have asked a first just to get out of the contract (maybe a second with retention). So essentially you traded the cost to get out of the Korpi contract and Kastelic for (one year of) a recent Vezina winner. Home run. Yeah, Boston needed a tandem goalie, but why not a free agent or other trade target over one of the worst playing goalies in the NHL? For Boston, I would have reworked the trade to have the main return be Chychrun, or in this framework, wouldn’t have pulled the trigger without a sweetener (2nd rounder or additional prospect) due to the negative trade value of Korpisalo
@cmac3530 the joke is that it is Boston's original pick that they sent to Detroit for Bertuzzi. Nobody seems to mention the fact that it was their pick in this draft.
And again a very good goalie wins a cup ...I mean it's not rocket science folks u need a stud goalie to have a real chance to win a cup ...not saying skinner sucks just bob was better
@@louisbuss6068 now I understand, he didn't want to resign there/Boston couldn't afford him and swayman so he did them a solid and told them, he's a one year rental in Ottawa. All things considered a good trade for Boston who would have been left with nothing and I understand Ottawa taking a flyer for a season to see what they can do with elite goaltending
Can tell Steve is becoming a dad because when he said "thank you" he signed it. At this point it has integrated into his regular interaction @7:05 Edit: time stamp
The real question is where ullmark signs next year. If he walks (Boston probably couldn't sign the two goalies anyway as they both deserve starting goalie salaries) then it makes sense and is a good trade for Boston. If ullmark stays in Ottawa it's a big win for them, if they trade him at deadline and recoup assets it's a small win and if he leaves after one season for nothing, Boston wins the trade
Korpisalo was literally ranked dead last in gsax last year out of 96 goalies on evolving hockey. It was going to cost a first round pick to get out of his contract. Kastelic is big and mean but he is not good. This trade is still a win for Ottawa even if Ullmark leaves after a year.
Umm we will see. I still do not expect much again this year. I do know as a realistic fan that Detroit, Montreal, and Buffalo are coming very fast. I still do not think Boston, your Toronto leafs, and now the Stanley cup champions cats decline at all. No chance sadly.
The Leafs should have picked up Linus Ullmark - oh wait they have all their money tied up with 4 players, let's lose another quality player, that sounds about right !
Korpisalo is an underrated goalie because he’s had to deal with HORRIBLE defense for the past few years, I’m really excited to see what he can do in boston
Having watched every minute of every single Sens game last season, I can tell you that Korpisalo is utterly, utterly horrendous. I honestly can’t believe we’ve managed to convince anyone to take him and his dreadful contract. Epic work from Stevie.
Korpisalo is not good. He’s the reason why the sens lost more then they won. He lets a bad goal in EVERY GAME, literal floaters… and sens defence really wasn’t that bad, wasn’t good but certainly wasn’t horrendous by any means.
@@neilsunstrum933 yes it would not be that surprising. Boston as a good defensive system that can help him, which the sens lacked the last couple years cus of DJ smith
@@HockeyFan102 Sens have a much better core. Goalie and defensive dman is all they lacked until now. New Ownership, GM, coach goalie…If you put LA in the Atlantic they would never make the playoffs
It’s impossible to say who won or lost without seeing how the players perform, but my predictions are: Ullmark plays well in Ottawa. .908+ Korpisalo struggles in Boston but improved marginally .900~ Sweeney uses the draft pick and reaches for a center, who will have a projected ceiling of a bottom six center, and he becomes another studnicka or Beecher Kastelic we already know… add him to the list of bottom six centers on the bruins, he’s probably 8-10 in the bottom six center depth chart after Coyle, Zacha, Poitras, Geekie, Beecher, Boqvist, Frederic etc.
That's what bothers me about Kastelic. Does he bring real value to a team? Absolutely. You love a big, defensive bottom 6 forward who's a demon at faceoffs. Is it what the Bruins need? Absolutely not. We already have a bunch of Kastelics. This trade doesn't solve their scoring problem. This doesn't really bolster their defense. They got weaker in net. And they hardly alleviated any cap space from this trade. Unless the Bruins get a steal from their 25th pick I'm willing to chalk this up as a net negative for Boston.
@@dim4757 sorry to disapppoint but Kastelic is considerably worse then every one of those forwards you mentioned. He is big, mean, and good at faceoffs, but he offers next to no offense and is not particularly good defensively. On a good team he would be the 13th or 14th forward.
The thing a lot of people don't understand is Ullmark had a lot of say in where he went. If he didn't offer to sign long term with anyone why would Ottawa give up more. The Bruins hands were tied. Might not be 1 for 1 but this is likely the best we get with all the parties involved having different ideas. We get some cap relief on a year a ton of cap dropped plus minimum went up, new potential players and a pick or a bargaining chip with said pick. We mostly came out on top.
Got no one to blame for that, then Cinderella wasting everyone's time by winning 3 games instead of bowing out gracefully. 😂 Personally, I love hockey, I'm not at all offended that it's on when it's 90+ decrees outside. (In fact, it's basic 8 AM right now and 85 degrees outside already, and I'm watching game six of the Calder Cup finals right now.)
Totally disagree with Steve on what The Bruins got with that #25 pick. Sure they aren't getting a superstar by any mean, but look at what they achieved with a Mathew Poitras this year, with Mason Lorhei and Brandon Carlo, with a Trent Frederic previously... Or heck even Better, what round got them Brad Marchand ? They don't have a super rich prospect pool but they have Scouts that truly, deeply know what they're freakin doing and one of the most commendable developping systems in the league after that to bring those kids to the best expression of their potential. This year the draft ain't the richest of all times but it seems it still is a pretty good one and at 25 they'll still get a seriously strong shot at a potential surefire NHLer that would fit the "post Marchand" timeline.
Ottawa got FLEECED! How the hell does Boston keep doing this? Ullmark is not going to be the same goalie on Ottawa that he was on Boston. He is 30 years old and his best days are behind him.
I was hoping Kevyn Adams would bring Ullmark back to Buffalo but it’s clear they’re going in a different direction. Dunno where though but I’m afraid I’m terribly familiar with it.
I gotta disagree with Steve here. I think this a great trade for the Sens and that's coming from a highly judgemental season ticket holder. It's Boston getting their own pick back, a gritty and reliable 4th liner, and a goalie who needed a change of scenery. And the Sens will get some reliability and consistency in the spot they need it the most. I think Boston gets a good deal out of this too.
He's got the build to be mean. He's got enough mobility to be a bit of a menace. But he doesn't consistently show the mentality. It's like being mean is something he occasionally forces himself to do, but it is never his first instinct. He's a former 47 G scorer in the WHL. Some guys view being tough as a calling, some view it as something they need to do so that they can get in the lineup and try to move up to a more offensive role. I wonder if Kastelic is more of the latter than the former. He is a hard worker, so maybe with time he'll become all he could be. That might be more likely in the Bruins organization than elsewhere.
He didn't sign there. He's on record saying he has NO intention of staying in ottawa after next year. It's an expensive rental No one wants to play in Canada let alone ontario
If you were to ask me a week ago what Ottawa would’ve had to give up to dump Korpisalo’s contract I woulda said a 1st + another pick/prospect at minimum. Probably would’ve had to take bad money back as well. They somehow got out of the contract while only adding in Kastelic (an ok 4C) and they managed to get the reigning Vezina winner in return?!? Even if Ullmark walks as a UFA this is still a big win from a Sens perspective. Goaltending was the biggest issue last year and Ullmark has been consistently good since his days in Buffalo. So you get him for 1year, and also dump your worst contract onto a divisional rival. Even if the Sens blow next year they can trade Ullmark at 50% before the deadline and probably recoup most of this value. Just a home run for Staois in his first big move I fully expect Korpisalo to bounce back in someway next year. Hard to be worse than arguably the worst goalie last year. Kastelic also seems like a prototypical Bruin as well. Big, physical, solid defensively, and will punch you in the mouth.
@@caseyhughes7601Bostons winning the division next year with this. It’s playoffs that’s been a failure. Mark can provide some strong D especially if they are going to try and compete and take the cup away from Florida and win themselves.
The trade announcement 15 minute before the game had to be orchestrated by Andlauer as a middle finger to betman for taking a first round pick from us for the dadonov trade.
@@Kastrenzo74 Dominik Hasek played for part of one year (before injury at the Olympics) at the end of his career. I think getting a recent Vezina winner in his prime is better. Though in terms of career achievements, no question Hasek is the best.
Hasek would like a word with you, and Craig Anderson as well (20 year career and 5th all time in wins by an American goalie. Andy was a beast), I don't want to put down Ullmark, very happy he's a Sen, but Ottawa has been burned multiple times the past few years in net from Matt Murray (he won two Stanley Cups, before injuries derailed his career), Talbot and now Korpi. Let's not count chickens till puck drop.
@@Wexter0083 I already talked about Hasek in another comment. Craig Anderson is interesting. He was the most accomplished and long-serving goalie the Sens have ever had. He backstopped the team to an Eastern Conference Final and also played through incredibly difficult personal circumstances. I really like him too, and I think it's an interesting discussion. I think Ullmark's ceiling is higher. Anderson never won a Vezina nor ever really contended for one. His career GAA and save percentage is better than Anderson, though admittedly not by that much. The workload for both of them in their best years is fairly comparable. Anything can happen, but I don't think Ullmark is like the other goalies you mentioned. Matt Murray was a rookie when he won the Stanley Cup with Pittsburgh. He had never really been a true starting goalie even in that city. Joonas Korpisalo and even Cam Talbot never played at the level of Ullmark's best.
@@BloggerMusicMan small note Anderson was 4th in Vezina voting in 2010 and 2013. And in the top 10 for the Hart in 2010. He was an extremely accomplished goalie who happened to play in the same era as some all-time greats (which makes winning the Vezina hard when you're playing in the same era as Price, Rask, Rennie, Fleury and Lundquist). As for Ullmark we cannot deny he's in a different league compared to other goalies we've had. I just don't want to get excited to just be disappointed. I just don't want us calling him the next coming of Hasek before he even skates a game. Let's give Andy and Hasek this due as the best two goalies Ottawa has ever had and let Ullmark play without the baggage of having to be compared to either of them.
Ottawa hands down won this trade and I am more than ok of having Ullmark not sign an extension right away. If he doesn't fit or doesn't want to stay, nothing is preventing the Senators from retaining and flipping him at the deadline for roughly of what they had to get to acquire him. We've also seen how Ullmark perform on a subpar team when he was with Buffalo. I don't think regression is in the cards unless the Senators over play him as he has never played more than 44 games in an NHL season. Great first trade (if you don't count Katchouk) for Staois. Hopefully more to come.
I see that different. Korpisalo even at 3m is not a good contract. That`s for 4 more years, a guy that failed to be a starter and might not even be a premium backup. For that you get Ullmark, a guy who`s a season away from a venizan, and stellar 93.8 SV% with lower than 2gaa in almost 50 games. Honestly, Korpisalo had 0 value, it was rather a buyout with his numbers. The player is a depth player that`s worth close to nothing and their own 1st. I`m not at all impressed of the return the Bruins got for one of the best available goalies.
Both teams got what they wanted. Ullmark will dip in Ottawa. Bruins will still have a decent goaltending tandem at a slightly lower cap cost. Plus they had some depth and pick/trade asset for Friday's draft.
@@sachinruparelia It will take a bit more that the Sens tweaking their D-core for Ullmark to put up the numbers he did in Boston. He's definitely a needed upgrade for the Sens.
sens need a goalie, they were at the bottom of the league in goaltending. Korpisalo isn't a good goaltender and isn't worth his contract, he won't do well anywhere. Ottawa came way ahead in this trade.
