Wow so exited had a bag of dry pinto beans and they took forever to soften the old method! Soaking overnight and eight hours in crockpot! Tried your method and many were still not soft! So re cooked again for 25 more minutes and each time letting it cool down for twenty minutes! So in the end it took two Efforts a total of 45 minutes cook time and natural on it’s own cooling down steam release ! Wow they awesome 👏 so good hard to believe how delicious! A 10 !!! I used a quart of boxed chicken 🐔 broth with a cup of water 💦 instead of just plain water and the best plain beans I have tasted in years! Almost and delicious as I remembered my twin grandmothers’ beans when they made them! Thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe for sure! Peace be with you! Looking forward to more of your recipes! Thanks for the post. My husband is diabetic. His doctor recommends no added oil. You can cook them the same way without any oil at all in the i-pot. No foaming problem!
@Thespicyapron
@Thespicyapron 5 лет назад
That's interesting. I only made it without oil once and it did foam over, but I also had the pot pretty full. So maybe with fewer beans, no oil is required? Good to know!
@chriso3580

Adding a few tablespoons of oil wont add much to the carb load of the beans ... not to mention the fact the fiber and protein in the beans will offse carbst. Seems like an unnecessary precaution to me.

@crytkryssus9851
@crytkryssus9851 3 года назад
Hi Lilia. These modern-day pressure cookers don't cook with explosive pressure. You shouldn't have any issues. I would suggest, however, just hitting cancel when it is done cooking and allowing 30 minutes or so to pass by so it depressurizes naturally. That way there is no risk of you getting burned from the hot vapor it releases. This isn't a big problem either as long as you're careful, however, if you just let it naturally decompress, you will be 100% safe of everything.

Thanks soooo much. I needed something quick so that I can make my black bean burgers and I wanted to do it with fresh beans not canned and this recipe was far more than what I expected, the beans came out so good. Then the next step I had to do was bake them so that I can dry them out so I can process them to make the bean patties this was just such an easy way to do my beans thank you so much again. And since it made so many the rest of the beans I just hooked them up the way I usually would and had them with rice.

Water level should be about an inch above the beans level add salt 1 tsp level per cup of beans (for 3 cups 3 level tsp salt), 15 min (pre dipped) on bean/chilli setting,and then bay leaves or whatever for added taste. Make sure to add a bit of olive oil to avoid foaming.

Any pressure cooker will do. Old school types are scary and potentially dangerous but effective. Keep your eyes open, a thrift store WILL eventually land a fully functional (probably new in the box) instant pot that sat in someone’s kitchen for years. Dirt cheap. Finding a new one for well under $100 is not hard. Both mine were scored on seasonal sales, the third one (ninja version) set me back a few bucks because I wanted it right away.

Your review is most useful. Thanks so much! I understand your concern about soaking beans the way this recipe is done. However, bean soaking and draining is a method to reduce gas if a person has that when eating beans, at least for pinto beans. I assume the recipe could be modified if soaking were to occur for that reason, and the time reduced. Cooking can require some experimentation, though. I am willing to do that. I do not cook with oil being on the whole food-plant based diet. I can deal with any problem that might occur. :) I had to stop buying Walmart black beans in the can (no salt) because they became far too watery and far less beans in the can. They were a superb option even cheaper than dry beans. I am very sad I have to switch. However, a pressure cooker can also cook pasta I would assume. In addition, the 3 quart model has low enough power draw (according to one person I read in a comment on Amazon), and will be good for camping should I choose to van camp. I don't like accumulating things but I eat pasta and beans every single day. I will buy the pressure cooker. Best wishes to you.

Dried black beans, ready to eat in 22 min. Not gonna happen. For the first round I set my IP duo to bean/chili setting of 20 min. Bumped it to 25. Ran it, allowing a 15-20 min natural release and spooned a bit into a bowl to cool and hit into what I expected. Undercooked beans. Added a second 20 min high pressure cooking and 15-20 natural release cycle, tasted again an undercooked black bean. Repeated a third time, and instead of wasting another 20, I forced a quick release at 10. Cooled a spoonful and they were So so.

Thank you for this video. Do I have to add oil? I do not want the added oil. What about pinto beans? What is the cooking time for Pinto beans?? Is this safe?
@Trakehner20
@Trakehner20 5 лет назад
Havnt made pintos in it yet, but made black beans. I do know its safe as far as an electric one goes, they have safety measures so they don't blow up. The stovetop type are more dangerous. YOu need to know how to use them, I know a person who swears by them, but I don't personally know how to use one. :-)

@@boomerang6130 the black beans turn out great, but I think they are a bit faster to cook than pintos, but the pintos shouldn't take much longer. Mine are perfect and tender in like 35 mins. I just shut it off at the end and let it release on its own. Before I cook it, I add just a tiny bit of organic apple cider vinegar (acv) which keeps the amount of flatulence from them at a minimum. I guess that's all the tips I have for now! 😆

I'm going to be making Costa Rican gallo pinto. I want to save time but my Instant Pot does not have a bean setting. What setting should I use for 22 minutes? Thx.
@Thespicyapron
@Thespicyapron 5 лет назад
You don't need the bean setting. Just use the Manual/Pressure Cook button and you should be good to go. Make sure it is set to "high" pressure and "normal" temperature (thees are the default settings so it should already be set this way).

What if you add less water to the beans then when the beans are cooked you won't have so much water in it Could you advice please if I can add less water?
@Thespicyapron
@Thespicyapron 3 года назад
I personally wouldn't add less water. It's important to have lots of water so the beans can fully soak it up. But you're certainly welcome to try it and see how it goes! Let me know! :)

@Thespicyapron
@Thespicyapron 3 года назад
That's a very long time and they should be soft for sure. Have you checked to make sure yours is set to high pressure? (sometimes as people are playing around with the buttons, it gets accidentally set to low) Also, do you have enough water? The water level should be at least 1 inch above the beans when you put them in dry.

@@Thespicyapron Thank you, yes ... I believe I have enough water. My model Instant Pot is the IP-LUX. I don't think I can change the pressure. Maybe I shouldn't complain, the beans are so delicious ... and the house smells so good when I cook them.
