I am literally doing this test with you (well, virtual you). I've been so scared to use this darn thing, have read the book that came with about a dozen times, but wasn't till I found your tutorials that I felt brave enough to give this thing a go! Thank you for brief, efficient, and clear instructions.

Aww Aimee - thank you for taking the time to comment! That means a lot to me. I know I felt like you do when I first started, and there weren't that many resources at that time and that's why I made the tutorials! Enjoy your new Instant Pot and if you have any questions, visit my website and click on the TIPS in the main menu and you may get your question answered, or you can contact me on my contact page, or comment here :)

Man I was really scared as well. I must say that all the tutorials I listened to never mentioned about that burning smell. To make it worst, I am trying it now with some beans in it before knowing this now I'm scared that my beans will taste rubber.

Thank you so much . Spent whole afternoon trying to do water test but turned off as could smell that burning plastic smell and thought it was faulty . Called Customer Services -:) This is third Water Test video I’ve watched and because you mentioned the smell and the steam coming out of the silver but I felt good enough to continue. Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏

Since I'm doing a water test anyway, may as well toss in some whole cloves. Not only would it help deodorize as you allow it to natural/slow release but it would also help to disinfect anywhere the steam reaches in the nooks & crannies through the release valves.

I took mine back because of the food burn issues. I had to do all of my high heat cooking on low. Anything that needed lower heat settings, I was unsuccessful preparing. My new one (InstantPot Duo Gourmet) has adjustable settings for rice and other presets. I haven’t had time to try it out, but I think it may solve my problems.

Thank you so much for this. I followed the IP website video directing me to put in 3 cups of water, so after an unsuccessful first attempt in my Duo 6 quart, I realized it was probably too much water. I watched your video & ran it again while the water was still hot, and it worked. I must say the Sealing/Venting switch is so loose I thought it wasn't going to seal, but perhaps this is normal for early usage of the Instant Pot?
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed 4 года назад
Val, the quantity shouldn't have made a difference other than the amount of time to come to pressure. You have to be patient especially if using cold water - it takes a while to heat up and come to pressure. The pressure release handle is supposed to be quite loose - this allow steam to escape to stabilize pressure. Enjoy your new IP!

I heard some units have a three quart line. Don’t use it for your water measurement. Use a traditional cooking measuring cup, not the cup included with the product. For the 8 quart cooker put 3 cups of water in the stainless steel insert. That is 24 ounces or 750 liters. I don’t know how much water goes in the smaller cookers. Check the instructions with your Instant Pot and following the instructions no matter what size unit you have.

It says on and has just been releasing steam for the longest while,it has been almost an hour...I put 3 cups of water...how long should it take?
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed 3 года назад
It shouldn't take more than 5 to 8 minutes (should be even less). If the float valve comes down, it's depressurized. If it hasn't come down, gently tap it with a chopstick tip and it should drop. Wiggle the lid slightly and that can also help the float valve to drop.

Some of the newest Instant Pots have a different venting system on the lid. These have three visible parts for venting instead of two. Make sure the part shaped like a teardrop is up. You will press this part for venting and turn it to pop it up for stopping. It vents out of the large venting port, away from your finger when you press it for release. I haven’t used this one, yet, beyond testing, but I loved my old one until it failed by allowing moisture to remain on the outside of the inner pot after filling it with food for cooking.
@PainttheKitchenRed

Is it safe to put a towel on the venting release? I was thinking of doing this so the steam doesn't go everywhere on the cabinet right above the table in my small kitchen.
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed 3 года назад
Shakeel, when I first made this video I l would ightly drape a towel over the steam release briefly while I turned the handle. I no longer do so. I would recommend that you use a long-handled wooden spoon to turn the handle instead. To prevent the steam from going on your cabinet doors, turn the Instant Pot so the steam release is not directly below the cabinets - that's what I do.

Is that normal on some models?

Although I did everything as in the manual & this video. But: while the screen was still showing ON there was steam coming out for few seconds. Then it started counting down. Whilst counting down it released steam on and off too. Then it showed END, I had a look at the valve which was still up (indicates pressure) and it oozed some more steam. Is all this ooze normal?
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed 2 года назад
Very small amounts of steam coming out from the steam release is not unusual. Happens to me sometimes especially if there's a lot of liquid. If it's a lot of steam, that's not normal. How long does it take for the float Valve thingy to do its thing? How do I know tots working until then? I feel like I’m waiting on nothing, it’s doing nothing
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed 4 года назад
It depends on the quantity of water. If it's just two cups or so, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes, but more likely less time. It should say 'On' and then change to the countdown after the float valve comes up.

It is exactly like an old fashioned pressure cooker, but digital, and with lots of safety built in. 4 minutes is definitely not 4 minutes, but how much more depends on the quantity of food in the Instant Pot and how cold the ingredients are.

It was all very informative. However I don’t agree with telling people to put a towel over it as it’s releasing the steam.

🤨 my instant pot says to put three cups of water in i tried it four times sealing button is in seal position setting everything correctly as you did steam comes out the top the whole time but the PIN comes up saying it has pressure and it never switches from on to the countdown 😥 after 20 minutes I turned it off

Abbey, it could be there's a defect or something needs tightening. Please check out my blog post: www.paintthekitchenred.com/16-reasons-why-instant-pot-not-sealing/. Some of the reasons won't apply to you, but there are some that might help you out. If nothing works, you should either return it or open a support ticket.

What if the steam is coming out of the sides 😅
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed Год назад
That most likely is because the sealing ring is either not put in properly all the way or it's damaged.

Mine stuck on 'ON' whyyy
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed Год назад
This can happen. It could be a one-off. If you had a LOT of water, it does take time to change from 'On' to counting down.

Donna, I would need more information to help you. At what point are you having an issue?

It’s been on for way longer than 2 minutes and the “on” hasn’t changed to the time :/

Did the float valve come up? If it didn't then you might want to check the sealing ring. If it did and it never counted down, you might need to file a support ticket at support.instantpot.com

I’m having the same problem...the “on” hasn’t changed, the float is up, and steam is coming out...for a very, very long time.

We have a 6qt duo nova and the directions say put 3 cups of water in not 1? Is this correct? It looks the same size as yours.
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed 3 года назад
You can use 3 cups; it'll just take slightly longer. 2 or 3 cups both work.

I laugh at myself because I am scared of my lil pressure cooker. When I cook chicken at kfc with a giant pressure deep fryer. That took my whole body weight to close.

PLEASE.... A word of caution here: it’s very dangerous to open the release valve using a dish towel and/or potholder as you could suffer serious burns. I literally cringed when I watched that part of an otherwise great video. Working in the medical field, I’ve seen many hand, arm, & facial burns from improper use of pressure cookers. You can release the pressure valve much more safely by using the hole in the handle of the spoons that come with the Instant Pot by placing the valve lever into the hole of the spoon handle and gently releasing the valve by gently moving it from “sealing” to “venting”, again being careful to NOT have your hand over the steam valve and lever. Thanks, from Kat in the kitchen.

Thank you for your comment. You definitely need to be careful not to allow steam to come in contact with your hands, face, etc.

Why we have to do that test?
@PainttheKitchenRed
@PainttheKitchenRed 5 лет назад
Nery, we do the test to make sure the Instant Pot is working correctly and to become comfortable using it for the first time. If the water test doesn't work, then you can identify what the issue is and possibly even return the item before it's too late. Thanks for your your question.
