Unbelievably its only taken me 20 years plus to recently understand this move. For all the lessons I have had, not one club pro has used the word external rotation or even demonstrated this move. I feel it was 20-years wasted. I now believe this move should be embedded into a persons brain and body at the early stages of learning the swing, if it isn't something that comes naturally. Finally this week and for the first time I have come to understand and feel this movement that I now feel is easy and natural for me to do. Up until now I always felt I was manipulating the club to impact to make any kind of contact. For me this was the missing link. It was the term "external rotation" that clicked with me. This excellent video of yours on this subject demonstrates and explains the move so well. I would suggest to many golfing pals who are struggling that they should watch this video until they fully understand and are capable of making this move. Damn good instruction from you. Many thanks.

I was working on exiting left and realized how connected my right elbow felt, so I went back and found this video. I've been concentrating on this move now and hitting it great. Sometimes it takes awhile for something to sink in. Belated thank you.

I was told I wasn't getting hip turn by a fellow at the range. When I verified this with video I started getting proper hip turn. What I discovered was that hip turn puts arms in position to do what your teaching. Allows time to rotate and get right elbow in there. It works. Ball is flying how I expect it to. thanks!

superb drill, teaches you to bring the right elbow down towards the torso while you simultaneously rotate the hips and squat. this has really helped me to shallow the downswing properly.

To be honest, Johnathan you might not have the most beautiful and stable backswing at lower body movement and finish posture...but your impact zone and hitting the sweet spot surely are pro level. I love it! Thank for the vids.

Best advice all week long!! I used to have this device called the medicus back in the late 90s that has a contoured hand grip for your right hand that slides up and down the shaft and also another device that unhinges if you have the incorrect take-away (or was that the Medicus- I forget). Anyhow I think it helps you train your left arm to keep it straight on the take-away. Can't wait to use your valuable tips next time I get back to the range (after this crazy heatwave passes through our area).

Hi Jonathan Your lessons are really good. I have been looking at them for maybe a week and also been practicing your drills. I hit the ball both firmer and longer with all clubs. I think you are really good at explaining what we usually do wrong and why it is wrong. And your drills to fix things are excellent. My big problem has been (or is) keeping the driver on the fairway. But when I do i often make par or better. Yesterday I played nine holes on par at my home course without any terrible drives. I am really liking your channel. Keep up the good work. Thx Best regards Björn Egertz Stockholm Sweden

I agree that Jonathan is really one of the most direct and clear instructors out there. Really appreciate your videos, Jon. A question about the 'glove drill' - or even using the shirtsleeves. Surely if you take a full back swing, the right arm must/should/will disconnect at the top? I don't have a huge backswing or anything, but this seems to be a problem for me. Should I try and keep the arm connected even at the top? That seemed restrictive to me when I tried it. I couldn't swing normally without the glove dropping out just before I started the downswing!
@jchowngolf
@jchowngolf 3 года назад
Your backswing length should be governed by your turn. If the drill is restricting your backswing, then that tells me that your overly active with your arms in your backswing. Keep the arms connected and turn 👍🏼

Great video ! When getting that right elbow infront of seam like that, club face is wide open, so bowing that left wrist is the hardest part in conjunction with the right elbow move for me, any tips or videos ?

Jonathon, I can see where this R elbow tucked in move and feeling can possibly get you feeling and being too narrow with the arms and hands coming down. How do we avoid against that? Thanks!

Great video. My only uncertainty is to stay connected with glove or clothing how do you have depth in the swing and have a bigger arc doesn’t staying connected with arm to side reduce swing depth and height to take arms on top of swing? Thanks.
@jchowngolf
@jchowngolf 3 года назад
Thanks Robbie. Your depth is created by a full turn. Your right arm being connected won’t have any negative effect to your depth, it only will if you’re achieving depth via dragging your arms inward which can cause big problems 👍🏼

I've seen many videos advocating this move but I don't get it - Surely it is exactly the same movement that we're all told not to do in the takeaway, ie. arms rotated open, which aims the clubface miles to the right and presents the heel to the ball and disconnects the arms from your body. How can it be such a sin during the takeaway but absolutely essential for good contact when approaching impact?
@jchowngolf
@jchowngolf 3 года назад
Forearm roll is fine in transition/early downswing due to the shallowing effect on the shaft. Depending on grip type, bowing the left wrist to some degree is necessary to square the face. Why us coaches don’t advice to forearm roll in the takeaway (excluding strong grips) is, yes the effect on club face (opening early) and most importantly the effect on the club shaft/centre of mass of the shaft, which will be pitched very horizontal early and will most likely lead to a compromising alteration later in the swing. Not all moves are equal in the golf swing, when the move is applied is crucial for its effectiveness.

As I worked on this at the driving range I found that even using a strong grip the ball faded. It seemed to open the club face too much.
