One of my 2024 goals is to improve my USCF rating through OTB rated games and one of the best ways to practice is to play longer time controls on a physical board. This morning I started what I hope to become a new streaming series where I play an instructive rapid game on the Chessnut Pro, narrating my thought process throughout.
In this video I play the Caro-Kann with the black pieces against a 1527 rated player on chess.com and analyze the game after in conjunction with chat. If you have anything to add, please chime in here!
Follow me on Twitch here: / cameronginochio
The Chessable course I reference in the video is here: www.chessable.com/the-caro-ka...
Use code “CAMERON” or follow the link for a discount on your order at Chessnut! www.chessnutech.com/cameron
Disclosure: Chessnut did send me the Pro board with premium pieces for free. I am NOT compensated for making this video or using the product on stream.

What are for you the pros & cons so far while playing OTB via Chessnut board?

Pros: it’s so much more fun than playing on a screen, point blank. It’s the closest you can get to OTB chess without playing another person. Incredible way to prepare for OTB tournaments if that is something that interests people. Works quite well for my purposes, which is simply connecting to chess.com and playing games. Cons: It’s an expensive board no doubt. It’s not very portable, tournament boards are pretty cumbersome. Moving the opponents pieces takes time which adds up over the course of a game. I would never recommend this board for a time control slower than 10 minutes, and even 10 0 would be tough. 15 10 and longer are best for this. Chessnut’s software can prove to be finnicky, imperfect, or straight up inoperable for certain features, which is frustrating when the product costs $500+.

@@cameronginochiochess yea make sense! I ordered one in Dec but still waiting for delivery - it seems like that the knights look also changed at the pro premium, but we can play a training game if it is there :)

Thanks for recording a rapid game. So many streams are blitz. There is more time to describe the moves in a rapid game stream. . Why does everyone not realize that blitz doesn't give enough time for teaching? And thanks so much for NOT playing music.. Subscribing..

Full disclosure I do play music on my actual stream so please be warned lol. For rapid though it’s just chill music like jazz, and pretty quiet. I take it out when I post to YT. I do honestly understand why blitz is the prevailing time format for stream, though. It’s not the most instructive but to a casual viewer it’s a lot more entertaining than watching a streamer think for 45 minutes in a rapid game. That said I’m glad people are finding this entertaining/valuable, I will certainly be playing more longer time controls on stream.

@@cameronginochiochess ..Thanks for your reply. I've seen quite a few 15/10 played on You Tube from other streamers. An example would be Ben Hunt (from England) who does Chess Boot Camp. Have you listened to any of his 15/10 live games? Usually, the opponents play within 30 seconds or so anyway even though they should use more time. Ben has problems playing too quickly in the endgame and often looses a game on a sudden unplanned disassembly of his position. He's right around your rating range too, about 1510. :)

I just bought a pro with premium pieces and cant wait to play. Do you feel weird with that premium pieces because of the extra size? They look that they cover a lot of the square

The premium pieces are amazing, you will love it. I’ve had no problems with them at all!
