In this video Josh the driving Instructor sits an ADI part 2, advanced driving test. This video is supposed to be fun but there is a lot to learn from it. I do mark it, the driving test as if i was taking a PDI on driving test.

I learnt a lot! Particularly the country lane part. The other day I had a commiseration drive instead of the usual London test route drive because my test was cancelled and instructor took me to dual carriageways, roundabouts and country lanes I've never been to before (all outside of test route area). Got another test lined up and I'm looking forward to learn new roads. Keeping calm and carry on.

Interesting video - Some great learning points. I'm currently working as a PDI (preparing for Part 3) and only this week mentioned to one of my students that I believe "distraction" should be taught as a skill to manage. My student was going for test, and on the way to the test centre he made a couple of driver faults due in part I guess to nerves, but also in part due to the fact he was talking and therefore not concentrating fully. And so I approached the subject of distraction by asking how he would cope when he has, for example, the radio on, or mates talking, or even, the distraction of silence. What are your thoughts on teaching this as a skill to learn, and, or, should it be made part of a standard driving test? As a learner you learn to "listen to the car" but once the instructor has gone, and their dulcet tones have been replaced by a "screamathon" on Radio 1, how do you adapt to such a distraction? I am happy to report however that my student passed!!
@GetWheelDriving
@GetWheelDriving Год назад
Thank you I hope you find it entertaining as well as educational. Good luck with your part 3. Are you a part of Josh’s discord chat? Lots of PDI’s on there plus weekly discussions and learning points. Distraction? Yes I highly recommend it and I sell it on the basis that the driving test itself is a huge distraction but you make a very good point about post test and radio on and friends gabbling etc. Congratulations on your student passing too!

Good luck with your test!! Commentary drive is one of the biggest tips you can get. You’re going to need to regardless in part 3. More content will be coming surrounding part 2 and 3 but it’s yet to be filmed, however the part 2 and a normal driving test are actually marked the same way. You’re just expected to drive in a professional manner, hence commentary is so much more important. This vid does cover following distance and progress drive which can be banana skins on a part 2. Make sure you know your show me tell me questions inside and out. Happy to answer any questions you have. I hope that helps!

I have got my part 2 training (10 hours) this weekend and will be using the trainers car. Haven’t driven a manual car (for long periods) for over 5 years so a little hesitant. Will be taking my Part 2 test in my own automatic car so not so worried about that part. This video was so helpful for me as an experienced driver as a lot of the faults picked up I noted, but 34 years of driving (17 of which as a blue light response driver), I have to concentrate so hard not to drop into some bad habits (hand position, making progress etc). One question I would like to ask is looking over the right shoulder when changing lane or overtaking. I was taught to check mirrors and glance over the right shoulder to clear the blind spot before manoeuvring. Is his allowed? I literally mean a glance and not a prolonged look as you would do before moving off. Excellent video. Please do more.

Hi there. Hope you're well. I've had my part 2 yesterday. Unfortunately I have failed to 3 serious faults and 4 driver faults. Ops. I was remaining very calm throughout until I did become hesitated at one large roundabout. A impatient driver was behind me and horned at me. I didn't move quick enough and slowed him down. 2nd occasion where there were road works with a traffic light. Light was green and I could of gone taking an opportunity. But I decided to slow down and the lights changed to red. I also obstructed a vehicle on my left who was coming out. But I did get close to the lights for him to come out. I think this is why I may have got caught on this. 3rd occasion where the road 30 with no speed signs. I was thinking it was 20 but it wasn't. I was going far too slow. Another opsi. Yeah so lots of mistakes to fix lol. And yep I think it's nerves as well. I hope it goes well next time though. Thanks.

This is the first video that I've seen which talks of "commentary driving" but yesterday, I said to my wife (who does not currently have a UK licence) that I will do what I do when flying - verbalise my procedures - I told her that she may find it annoying but that it will help me and if she pays attention, it should help her for when she comes to training for her own UK licence. I had my part 2 failed last week, 10 faults. I drove an hour and 15 minutes by the time we got back to the test center. I had 8 hours training but 3 months before the test. Some of the observations I have after the result are as follows: for parallel parking, I had to wait for a bit as there was a lorry behind and a car was coming from the front, also the road was a bit narrow. I waited to see if the lorry stop before I start the reverse and both vehicles stopped and started the reverse. But got done for reserve park observation and I don’t know what have I done wrong ? Don’t you have to make sure everyone stops before you reverse?? An other point was that, I was trying to drive on the left hand lane and thought this was a right way and also when you change line what is the correct distance for the car behind you? And undue hesitation on cross roads? These are my observations. Thanks

My ADI Part 2 test is in two days and I have a confusion to be cleared. On my test route there is a mini roundabout just near test centre. I know that exiting at left you should indicat left on a normal mini roundabout and where 1st exit is on 3 oclock and 2nd exit is on 6th o'clock however on this roundabout first exit is straight means 1st exit is at 6 oclock. My instructor marked me for not giving left indicator while driving straight on the roundabout which was first exit. I am still confused cus most people saying you shouldn't signal while driving straight on mini roundabout . Your replay will be highly appreciated.
@GetWheelDriving
@GetWheelDriving Год назад
It’s difficult to answer without seeing it however. I would suggest following this thought process. Applying the correct signal even if it’s unnecessary doesn’t impact anyone so it’s not noteworthy as in no fault. Not applying the signal when someone can benefit does have an impact on other drivers and therefore is a fault. So by not applying the signal would that impact anyone? Would anyone benefit? You will then find your answer… I really hope that helps!!

Hands passing beyond 12 o'clock on numerous occasions 613_3450 secs etc. 5) Body steering at 611secs and leaning into corners, he is not on a motorbike. 6) Dangerous approach to the pedestrian at 617 he should have been offside as she was drifting. A good time to position the hand over the horn to show that you are aware of its use. 7) 624 position of safety view and stability too close to the learner driver they could have bunny hopped the junction etc. the centre lane was clear to straddle. 8) 645 zero should check for road on right entry to junction. Blind driving right mirror is insufficient. Hands again crossing the 12 o'clock position. 9) 700 Insufficient distance from the scaffold waggon workers are know to just step out without observation. 10) 3 in a bed at 713 you need 1.5m x 3 to pass this space dangerous manoeuvrer. Immediately into second offence as the camera cut. 11) All 3 and a shoulder check absent at 712sec 12) Failed to open the window at 820 on the reverse. No use of auditory senses. My Instructor just retuned from accident with an 80 year old under the car. Only a 10 mile and hour impact but did not here this happened in a similer situation. 13) 1135 Poor forward observation on crossing. I.P.S.G.A and all that jazz. 14) 1229 Entry to roundabout too fast for black car. He should have held back and sat behind with more stopping distance. 15) 1728 no noticeable nearside shoulder check at left turns on egress from roundabouts. 16) 1326 I have had it drilled into me that you should be handbrake on and in neutral. You could have a heart attack and off you go while your passed out. Although they have no problems with both hands off the steering wheel when the vehicle is stationary and in neutral and the handbrake on as it is a good opportunity to rest the muscles. The indicator should not have been on and should have been cancelled if stationary for more than a few seconds. The indicator is then reignited on moving forward. Only the first 4 cars need to indicate at a junction. I believe the indicator was also applied before the side junction. 17) 2133 8 point check and secondary shoulder when ever setting off from kerb edge and stops such as this. 18) 2220 failed to SLAP on the G.O.R. Not making progress. Position of safety view and stability away form the land-rover he had know idea what was behind it. 'Position of advantage' 19) 2251 Use the full width of the road when available wild animals and hazards could egress the verge. Off siding is OK If the instructor believes you have the ability although it is classed as not taught. It is part of the 5 S's That little bit of sparkle. If he was off siding he would have had an extended LP at 2258 I would have been asked why I am travelling so slow. They want a spirited drive as close to the limit as possible while safe and able to stop at my side of the road in the distance I can see. 20) 2850 Sitting in the blind spot for way too long. Could have impeded the van moving into lane 1 of 3 21) 2910 There is no such thing as an overtaking lane. It would be acceptable to flash this driver to inform them that you were there and they were impeding your progress. 22) Poor acceleration sense at 3110. Zero 3 mirrors and shoulder check. 23) 3324 I agree with all points. 24) 3441 worrying length of time making eye contact instead of forward observation. Never look at your passengers in a moving car. This is just what came to hand as I was watching. Well I dont watch I analyse as I love to improve and wish to be a great tutor. Respect to all.

That’s incredibly long list… and will take me a while to get through it but I like your approach. A part 2 test is the driving test that a driving instructor needs to pass in order to proceed to a part 3 test (instructor ability test) I would need to run through the vid and at this present time, considering the list, I don’t have the time right now but I will say I’m incredibly impressed! A driving test is marked in the basis of risk. Falling into 4 categories (not note worthy, low risk, medium risk and high risk) A part 2 is not the highest test in the land but just for one example, holding the steering wheel. Yes there are recommended methods and a PDI (potential driving instructor) should demonstrate the recommended method however as long as competence of control is demonstrated the rest is not considered note worthy. Again I’m incredibly impressed with your knowledge and when I have more time I will read your notes relating to the specific time codes. Thank you for taking the extensive time to put together your assessment 😊

@@GetWheelDriving Every word is only written to help. As you know once a level of skill is reached it becomes opinion based on experience. A good example of this would be I love to drive down a road nr to myself and enjoy the long flowing bends that is littered with CHAOS signs and warnings. I say to my self what's it all about this plethora of signs distracting me. The road is a lovely. Where my friend who is a police responder avoids it as he can see dead bodies, fatalities. dismemberment and pain every few hundred meters. One of his visions is of a young female officer walking towards him with a frozen face and someone's leg in her arms saying "what do I do with this". On close inspection of the Yorkshire walls they have scrapes and holes punched through both repaired and unrepaired this tends to be lost by the odd old flower tribute tied to a static object. His experience is very different to mine. Its a matter of perspective. It is the case that most of these accidents were due to excess speed and poor driving technique (There are people around here who like to race each other in their cars with tinted front window etc) Its a fatal example of the Dunning & Kruger effect in full flow. All I am saying is this the more experience you have the further into the future your vision can extend. We have people with skill because they stand on the shoulders of those who came before them. Only the ignorant and the demon named Hubris ignores their words. Lastly I genuinely believe that speed is not a factor in an accident this all relates to context and skill. Many should never speed but many could or do with a shield of knowledge and experience protecting them. Please feel free to use anything I have written to help others. I am also able to type quickly so some time say too much. Have a lovely day and take your time. Yes there are recommended methods and a PDI (potential driving instructor) should demonstrate the recommended method however as long as competence of control is demonstrated the rest is not considered note worthy. Response) Firstly we can not use gesticulation, pick up voice tone or be privy to eye contact when reading an individuals reply to an online conversation. Just know that every word is nothing more than light hearted and inquisitive friendly interaction. On reply Quote) A part 2 it states in Road Craft 'that the hand should not pass 12 o'clock' as it puts your arm Infront of a possible airbag deployment. Airbag deployment is very critical and they are not designed to explode with your arm across the point of explosive discharge. To keep it simple I would say that competence and control is not demonstrated. (The quality of being adequately or well qualified physically and intellectually). When one fails to keep the arms from passing the 12 o'clock safety position. Again I learn through dialogue and the interaction of ideas fact and banter. I find that nothing improves ones knowledge than someone questioning what you know as reality. Every days a school day but most people dont enjoy conversation and learning anymore. With out becoming too political I think this has to do with taught behaviour by top one percent. Divide & Conquer. Shoulder to shoulder is a much better way of stepping forward into the unknown.

Can you commentate on your own driving during the ADI part 2 test?

Yes you can! It’s the drive that counts… Have you been practising?

@@GetWheelDriving oh that’s good to hear as I read somewhere that you can’t. Maybe it’s changed recently. Yes I find it easier to say what I’m doing, I feel it’d provide the examiner with rationale behind what I’m doing too?

A commentary drive is not part of the test but I can’t see why it would be an issue using it to concentrate. If you’re unsure you can always ask the examiner if it would be a problem. No matter what you’re saying though the examiner is just watching how you drive. You could be saying one thing but doing the opposite. So make sure the drive is up to scratch.
