I originally wanted to play piccolo too, but I had a really rude music teacher who told this 10 year old that I couldn't. Even then I said that I'd be happy to play flute first, but she still basically told me I might not be able to. Omg everyone hated her. I now play flute and piccolo disputed what she told me. She finally retired this year so she won't be crushing anymore kids dreams.
When I was 11 I was playing as first chair flute and my band director gave me a piccolo and asked me to play a solo with it a month later. It was my first experience with a piccolo and it's definitely one of my favorite instruments
This was a BRILLIANT video. He is really interesting, clear, and super informative. And the information about "being a good flute player first." Will help a lot of folks looking at the Piccolo before the flute. Kudos Sir.
I noticed something interesting. When this gentleman starts to play high notes, he lifts his face (most notably his eyebrows), which is something that singers also do on order to lighten their pitch or to hit high notes more effectively. Thought that was kind of interesting...
Most wind musicians do this because the natural response to higher notes is to tense up greatly (easiest seen in trumpet players' altissimo) From my experience, learning to play higher means learning to stop the tensing up since it pinching the note quite a bit
@@LowReedExpert1 You are right in saying many people do that. However, he is not tensing up here when he plays high notes, he is changing the air column which is natural on good flute playing.
I don't play piccolo, I actually play the bass flute. But I did find this video very well made and informative. I loved his story about how he wanted to play the piccolo when he was twelve, I thought it was cute. I honestly think this is the best video you guys have put out there. Good job :)
I just got a piccolo today, I'm really excited! I've been playing flute for a little bit now and I was interested in playing something new. I really wanted to play the alto flute or base flute, but they are very expensive and not many people play. Do you recommend it? When did you start Playing?
well the thing with bass or alto flutes is that its really rare to see someone playing them in an orchestra or concert of that sort. Those are instruments that are usually played in flute choirs. The reason the piccolo is more common is cause it just fits in better and is much easier audible than the bass or alto flutes which parts can be much easily heard on a tuba or trombone.
I play the flute, but am planning on independently learning a bit of piccolo. I couldn't find any other videos that told me the differences between the two besides this none. Very helpful.
I go to Philharmonia concerts quite a lot - my father used to be sub-principle Double Bassist with them - I've often seen this guy 'biding his time' in between Piccolo entries and then letting rip - always brilliantly. What a nice guy! These are very informative short videos.... I'm learning a lot.
I ended up making first chair in the all region band and had to play the piccolo for a region clinic and concert, and it was my first time ever playing the piccolo. Of course I practiced the music before hand but I had never played it with the band. I was terrified to play the flute soli in the march. for the entire first half of the day I was waaaaaaaayyyyy out of tune. I wanted to chunk it into a fire, but after lunch I came back and my director gave me some life saving tips and helped me tune. Once I figured it out I started to like it. Needless to say my first experience on the piccolo was really scary. I felt exposed and was sad when I didn't get to play the pretty flute part in the waltz, but I learned to love it within that 8 hour clinic day.
Very interesting about the different pitches for the "same" note. I've never played the flute, and when I did play some instruments in high school my ear wasn't quite where it is now. I'm kind of hooked on this series right now.
I don't play one, but my favorite piccolo part is at the end of the 1st movement of Shostakovich's 10th symphony (Piccolo duet). Spirit of 76 is my 2nd favorite.
I play piccolo in my school band... I played flute for like 3 years and when my band conductor changed. He change me to piccolo..... I miss my flute but it's okay.
A delightful sound! I have a basic student Yamaha piccolo. After playing the flute this is surprisingly difficult. I always sound a tiny bit flat but it could be my lack of experience. Thanks for the interesting and fascinating insight.
I am 1st chair in 7th and 8th grade band for the flute section, i really love the flute, but i would also love to play the piccolo too. in our band you can play 2 instruments at the same time, and i would really love to play the piccolo. your video helped me not only by me wanting to play the piccolo, but it also helped me with my flute. so thanks
Thanks for the good information. I'm a flute teacher with a student who wants to expand to piccolo. This was very helpful. Beautiful voice and pleasant demeanor!
Unfortunately some people say it hits with the demon wave I've been searching through the comments for almost five minutes you're the first person to make a reference
Awesome video! I would love to pick up piccolo! Right now I play oboe, alto sax, bari sax, ukulele, and am learning violin. I started last year and I've come quite far and sound quite advanced for my age! I got into the middle school jazz band with bari sax though I originally auditioned with alto. I've had to get used to the weight and bettering my air flow. I slowly began to change things up and move on to more classical music, I picked up oboe this year and absolutely love the beautiful sounds and music it plays. I've learned many classical pieces and it's so fun and soothing to play! I would love to pick up piccolo because f it's sweet alluring sound. My goal this summer is to learn both piccolo and violin and make covers of classical music and upload them to RU-vid. I guess I could be considered an old soul for my love of classical music and playing instruments in general, especially for being in sixth grade!
NEW INSTRUMENT FILMS: Hi everyone! We’re about to embark on making some new instrument films and we want to hear from you! What instruments do you want to see covered? Reply within the next week! Thanks for watching!
ive been playing flute for about 8 years now but my mum started me on a piccolo because I was 7 and she thought I would find it easier because it was small. she was SOO wrong haha.
When I first started playing flute, I always had a hard time playing lower notes, so learning pic wasn't too hard for me, but I'm sure it's different for everyone
The embouchure is a lot different from flute. It'll take a bit of time, not too long though to start getting notes out. Then flute becomes hard to play afterwards 😂
+Philharmonia Orchestra All of these vids are great. It would also be good have some vids where all the instruments in a section are played one after the other. So that we hear the differences between violin, viola, cello. Or oboe, clarinet cor anglais. For newcomers to classical music, all the instruments in a particular section often sound the same. Playing them serially, helps a newcomer discover the sonic differences between them.
I play the flute, but have never fancied playing the piccolo because the high register on the flute can hurt my ears :) It's probably because I haven't mastered a smooth sound yet! The Piccolo seems like a lovely instrument when played properly though :)
go for it! its great when you're in the orchestra and can your sound carrying over everyone. I love the power it can have! but also the lower register can be really lovely once you can get it clear. I've been playing piccolo for a few years and I only found out about a month ago that its recommended to wear earplugs because its so high it could permanently damage your ears!!!!
Most interesting information. I saw the famous "Baby Elephant Walk" performed by the renowned composer/performer Mr. Henry Mancini himself. I thought it was the flute. But a wiser person informed me that it was actually a piccolo. Now I know what a piccolo is, and is capable of doing.
I looked this up because I was watching the Disney tv series Tangled and the daylight thieves stole a wooden piccolo and the animators drew it looking like a recorder.

This guy looks like the toughest guy who works in the middle of the woods cutting down trees or working at a construction site but he plays the piccolo really fucking good
This was very interesting. Even though he says piccolo it's more for playing along with an orchestra than for solos, I still want one for busking on the streets--the lower register of the flute is just too soft.
Had a tiny shabby experience of playing piccolo in a marching band. Exactly what he said, bored to death or scared to death.😂😂😂 piccolo is meant to be heard distinctively and if you go wrong it can’t hide...😂😂
I was playing the flute for two years in middle and I was first chair but then when I changed to piccolo for marching season so one I can learn and two my flute can get fixed it was easy o learned less than 3 days but then when I got my flute I couldn't play it I was mad but then I practice and now I can play both so if you wanna play piccolo coming from flute practice your flute
What? Is he talking about a baroque one? Or a silver one? Because a solid silver flute doesn't have a noticeable taper. Can you see it? I have been playing for a while, and I haven't noticed it...
I think an example of a piccolo I can think of is the track "Get King Ghidorah" from the movie "Godzilla vs King Ghidorah". It also heard it when american revolution reactanters are marching.
